It was on this day....in japan that the anime version of pretty soldier sailor moon debuted on japanese TV. The show has become a huge hit, after the manga was already a hit.

Then it came over here to america...

(oh there he goes about to attack the localization of sailor moon again!)

First Saban tried to *ahem* rape it. Go look this up on youtube and prepare to be offended if you're physically disabled.

Then DiC who we've watched some classic cartoons from was handed the reigns to localize it for us americans. What ended up was mostly a mess of a dub. Say what you want about how it took years for anime to be finally accepted (you sure it is in 2012?), but there was no excuse for this poor job of a dub. Cutting episodes out, censoring slapping. YES, SLAPPING. Terrible voice work. Changing names, phrases, attacks, mischaracterizing certain characters (especially poor Rei), combining the last two episodes of the first season together to make you think the inner senshi never died at all, while insulting your intelligence as to why they appeared so transparent like that with princess serenity. They didn't do any better with the R season ether. Don't get me started on the R Movie dub. Oh did I mention Zoisite is actually a dude, and he's gay?

Then CWi took over the reigns for S and SuperS. Even though she kept some things from the original like BGM and Hotaru's name (and preventing me from burning their building down over that one), they pretty much kept DiC's no-excuses BS intact. Even going so far as to make Haruka and Michiru cousins. COUSINS! Oh my for cousins they sure liked to um...get a little too close with each other. The one flub that sticks in my mind to this day was when Usagi's english voice actress completely effed up Super Sailor Moon's attack. SuperS was no better ether.

And then Stars---oh yeah, none of you that never saw this show in japanese never even saw this season!

Okay okay, the point is that 2012 is the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon. Now that the manga has been re-released with a proper translation, I'd like to get a discussion going on your fandom.

But what disappoints me as a fan (and a male one at that....) is the lack of anything to do with a 20th anniversary. Otakon to my knowledge doesn't have a panel as of this moment for this. It's pretty much the one thing that'll sell me on being part of that con. And what about crunchyroll for goodness sakes? Unless the fine folks running this place can shut my lips this month, I don't see them mentioning the 20th anniversary ether.

Anyhow, let's discuss the 20th anniversary. Have you seen all the episodes? Read the manga? etc etc!

I am simply abhorred by what DIC did to the series, and then after I became simply abhorred with even the Japanese anime after reading the manga.

But in all seriousness Sailor Moon is one of the greatest animes of all time. I am just disappointed that a lot of people were only introduced to it as the "magical girl" only anime, and the commercialized version. They never really saw the depth and true spirit behind the character Usagi.

And I was upset how the Stars was handled. Takeuchi-sensei only wanted women to be Sailor Soldiers but they had to go and change that. And I really wanted to see how they were going to handle Chibi Chibi and Sailor Cosmos. *sigh*

And why did they make Tuxedo Kamen so lame????? He had other attacks! Come on. He was the..well I don't want to spoil for new readers but let's just say he had a lot of control over the Earth, okay. There was no Tuxedo la smoking bomber or anything!

And back to Usagi..she was a crybaby in the manga, but eventually she grew up and matured. The anime would only have her serious for certain episodes, but in the manga, she was still precious Usagi, but she was a savior to everyone and took her role seriously. People actually died! in the manga. It wasn't just energy drain or however else the anime tried to sugarcoat it.

...Sorry...you just posted a topic that I feel very passionate about. And I had no idea myself that it was the 20th anniversary

1) Yeah I heard she wasn't happy about the way the Starlights were handled in the anime. I wasn't particularly fond of them myself. When the stars arc of the manga gets released, I'll be able to see how they were originally.

2) I dunno. By the time SuperS came around, he just there and felt kinda useless. Poor Mamoru and what happens to him in the Stars anime season.

You've never read the manga? Than you are in for a treat. I had read the manga once the US license from MIXX had expired, but since it got relicensed in September 2011 (I think) I may go out and purchase the new release

I wonder if they are still going to call Usagi and her friends the American versions. Funny enough, even a lot of diehard manga fans prefer the Enlgish names. I for one hate Amy, Lita, Raye, Darien, Andrew, etc. I prefer Ami, Rei, Mamoru, Motoki, etc. For some reason I liked when they called Usagi, Bunny or Buns (Usako ) because at least they were translating her name. And I loved when Mamo-Chan called her Buns ^_^ Serena was an irritating version. And I espically hated the name Rini. Especially.

Oh no, I already read/own all of the re-released manga that has been released thus far. I just finished reading #3 as a matter of fact. This is actually the first time I'm reading the manga, to be honest with you.

Yes they do keep everything from japan, give or take a few understandable puns here and there. It's the translation fans like you and me have been begging for.

As a person who grew up in the time that Sailor Moon was released (and to other butchered) in the US, I will have to say your rant is not uncommon and has been addressed many times over the years as I'm sure you know. Why you have to bring this up I don't know but if you're going to post the changes that were made please post the reasons that they were made, including if you will the reason that we ended up with Sailor Moon Says.

You fail to take in to account the time slot that the show was airing, the tv restrictions of the time, what was seen as acceptable to show at that time, the target audience, the fact that most kids who were watching wouldn't care that Usagi's name was changed to Serena. I didn't care that they changed the ending of the first season to make it seem like the other senshi didn't die. Looking back on it I still don't care. I was lucky enough to get to keep watching it after my parents saw the outfits that they were wearing after their transformations.

I'm not going to say they didn't change it. I'm not going to say that now that I'm older I wouldn't like to see it re-dubbed without such changes. However, I do wish people would stop giving DiC such fuss about the changes that were made in order for them to present it to the US audience and to make a profit. As you can see by the number of fans it's not like those changes made it so that people hated the series.

As for the voices, since I'm assuming you've seen the Japanese versions and the English versions like I have, I find that both of them had equally annoying voices (I'm an equal opportunity person when it comes to finding voices annoying. I don't just give the Japanese a pass because they are the original VAs like some people I've talked to.).

I find things like this tiring, and I don't know why I keep responding to these things. I've had to deal with this for going on 8 years now and quite frankly it frustrates me. Just be happy that we got to see it at all instead of complaining about how we got to see it.

And since I'm tired I will leave the rest up to this: http://sailormoonforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=17941&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&sid=9f9951d1699b2fa8ce2d6149aac2acf5

Nothing irritates me more about Americanization of manga/anime than when they think they need to censor stuff, rename it, recast the characters and dumb it down like we are all a bunch of drooling imbeciles.

Seriously, what the hell was wrong with "Karin" that they renamed it Chibi Vampire? seriously!? Ugh!

And there was that bit in Sailor Moon where they changed two of the characters into kissing-cousins as if that was somehow more acceptable than being lesbians. lol

Anyway, happy 20th Sailor Moon, I'm sorry you endured so much at the hands of dipshitted foreign companies.

I have seen both versions of the anime. I have also went over that link you presented there as well, and some of the points are valid.

However...

1) What was the point in cutting out Minako's episode from the "classic" season? I've seen it countless times and I have not found one thing in it that could be offensive.

2) The violence issue. So even though we've seen slapping in just about 50% of the cartoons we've grown up with, this is somehow a horrible thing for children to see?

3) The BGM. CWi had enough sense to keep the original BGM, DiC did not. Why would you change it in the first place? If it ain't broke don't fix it?

4) I'll mention this part of my post again, the changing of the majority of the attack phrases. Jupiter Thunderclap Zap??

5) How come Hotaru and the majority of other characters introduced since S keeps their names but the other three outers don't?

6) Probably the biggest one. Many folks that only saw the dub are wondering what happens after that last episode of SuperS. They would come to find out through the magic that is the internet that a 5th season was released long ago featuring three new sailor senshi who are...*gasp* dudes in civilian forms! And what's this....sailor senshi as enemies too? The whole show feels so much more mature now!! Ohhh the horror of it all! We can't show this on american children's TV!!

There are others that are on the tip of my mind. You can beat around this all you want, but these are inexcusable reasons that cannot be avoided. They just can't be. Especially number 6, and CWi should've known what they were getting into when they started dubbing S and SuperS long ago, knowing that the anime was long since finished in early 1997 with that Stars season.

But given the sales of the re-released manga, where kodansha finally listened to (at the risk of coming off elitist..) the real fans such as myself who's been screaming for years a true translation of this series done right, staying with the original source, and even bringing over Codename: Sailor V for the first time. Look at the sales of the manga. This whole franchise just got a new lease on life and it's only a matter of time before a company like Funimation comes along and the anime version receives the same treatment as the manga. DVD/digital only of course.

We can keep going with this discussion, but of course we can also talk about memories, favorites, merch, etc.

^ This.

Haha, I saw one episode of Stars on a much copied VHS once about 12 years ago... Blew my freakin mind compared to what I had previously /thought/ I knew about Sailor Moon. I think it was my first indication there was actually a difference between a dubbed version and an original version... Boy scouts, resbians, Pluto?!, USAGI!?!?! Mind still blown. I can see your the same age as I am, OP, so I definitely feel your exasperation!!

I think it really killed me when I found out her name was Bunny and they changed it in the American version >.< That was what made me start seeking out the originals; the dvds are uncut :)

Admittedly, I have not seen the entire series, just most of it, but Sailor Moon will always hold a special place in my heart ♥

Oh yeah, and if it makes you feel any better, Moonlight Densetsu is my ringtone, the compact activation sound is my text sound, and a fabulous color manga shot of Mamoru and Usagi is my background! ^_^

Sailor Moon is still awesome. Heck, super-powered pretty girls in skirts--come on. ^^ Sailor Mars is still my favorite and she's hot (bad pun, I know). It's a shock that the FCC had forced DiC to make it look like a kid's show even though it's more mature and darker as the series progresses. Actually, for some reason, I find 90's shoujos more mature than in the 2000's but that's another story. Anyway, S is my personal favorite season.

In my opinion, Sailor Moon is begging for a remake to follow the manga closer. Or rather, it NEEDS a remake. That would rock. I don't think it's fair that only FMA, Hunter x Hunter, and DBZ get remakes. Can you imagine how cool the battles and attacks would look in 2010's art? Eyegasm!

I'm thinking about reading the manga as well since it's shorter than the anime.

Haven't read the manga, but I've seen the full series in Japanese. When I was little I watched Sailor Moon with Swedish dub. They actually did an okay job with the dubs but there was some real patchwork going on with the airing of the episodes. Some name changing as well as I recall, that sucked, but the episodes that did air were dubbed just fine.
