How can you call this YOUR art when they have the right to even EDIT it?
How can you even claim that you have designed their logo for them when you're surrendering all your rights of your art to someone else?
Technically it's not yours anymore...

^ Agreed.

I think CR needs to clarify whether the artist will be credited on the promotional material, whether he/she can show it in their portfolio, etc.
From their statement, it also sounds like even if your mascot isn't chosen, you're surrendering your rights to it once you submit it.

(Also surprised there is no prize for this? Not even a CR membership or something? o: )

I think it is the "edit it as necessary" that's putting some people off.

This sounds great, as long as the artist can always get credit for this and be able to use this as work experience if they need it for future employment.

I saw this thread, and this is my first time on Crunchy Roll, and seeing this contest made me think it would be a good time to join. I'll do my best to try and submit a mascot for the site >w<

Aw, why no prize? It's the least you could do if you're going to use the artwork in anything that related to Crunchyroll. Plus, there aren't any details about what the design should be: Like what min/max size? Or should the Crunchyroll icon be included in the design? (and if it must, there should be a link to the image)

It really bothers me there wasn't anything more posted.

I would love to draw something even though i don't like the "edit if necessary etc" part either but i wish there were more specifics about what to draw/enter...it's too broad for me. idk, i'll still try....

My daughter, (the one who introduced me to this site) is a published artist, I'll kick it by her. Don't get your hopes up though, (she's Really busy) but I'll try. = )

This is such a terrible exploit of talent. Crunchyroll is looking for free ways to make attractive ads. By hosting a contest, with no reward what-so-ever, you're submitting to CR your work for free. This is a terrible way to use new and aspiring artists, because asking a professional or freelance artist to do this kind of work would cost them a lot of money. Why pay royalties or fees if you could just use newbies who don't know any better? This way they can select from hundreds of submissions without paying a dime. As a digital artist myself, I urge you to not submit your work for free! There is no guarantee your artwork will be used or that you can even claim it as your own work for future resumes!

Edit: The 10 day deadline only adds on to this evidence of exploitation. They expect you to put aside your time and rush out professional work on a professional deadline for free!

Wake up peeps. CR has to be able to fit their mascot into any format, anywhere. That requires editing. = )

This is rather standard for contests of this type, and is typically done to cover themselves legally. If they didn't state this, and you thought your design resembled the one that was selected (or one they commissioned if all the submitted versions were deemed unsuitable), you could sue them. With this provision, you probably wouldn't make it past a preliminary hearing, assuming you were able to get a lawyer to take the case.

I have my doubts whether even a few of the people that will be making submissions could obtain paid commissions, so it isn't as if they will be losing anything. I suspect the "edit it as necessary" was included not only for reformatting purposes, but also to include "cleaning it up" to professional standards if they like the concept, but the art is lacking.

If I were to view your statement with a cynical eye, I could say it looks more like, "Don't compete with we professionals, you're taking a job away from us".

wow.. not even a premium account?

There are also hardly any guidelines for this contest (size, format, theme, contact, credits, judges, limits). So far your email address is nothing but a picture dump and it's not even clear if the creator will ever hear back from you (winner or not).

I like the idea and motive, but a contest needs some supervision and not just "hey, send me som pics. i might do whatever i want with them".

So, not having a tablet makes you mediocre? I've seen tons of CRAPPY Anime/Manga style artworks drawn with tablet and fancy graphic softwares.

Even if you have a tablet, it doesn't mean you'll come up with kick-ass art work without flaws. It's all about good drawing and design skills honed with endless practice.

You could still submit beautiful artwork done with right art supplies. You just have to put some effort into it.
