I love contests with no prizes...

How can you call this YOUR art when they have the right to even EDIT it?
How can you even claim that you have designed their logo for them when you're surrendering all your rights of your art to someone else?
Technically it's not yours anymore...

Well they have a point, an artist has to think hard and work really hard to make one. Y'kno so I get where this person is coming from. But man, if you're gonna go and take claim of the art at least you can do is throw out a prize whether it be a small one. Exposure as an artist can get pretty easy I mean, once your art is uploaded on the internet, it can easily be published anywhere. People will know who you are in a way, and sure maybe not everyone likes to credit us.... Hmmm I'd like to do it... though, maybe if I don't forget ^^'

I dont understand where i should submit my entry , can anyone help me with a link , cuz the contest@crunchyroll.com doesnt work and i dont know why...

It's an e-mail address. You e-mail your entry. I do not understand how you can even begin to think it was a web address. There's an '@' sign.

Why are we calling this a contest? It's a call for mascots. The community, whether it's school, sports teams or cons, get to take part in the creation of their mascots. Because it represents the group, a homegrown approach is generally more appreciated than a strict business offering. Still, I do think that Crunchyroll should have offered some prizes as a thank-you.

free work? I think not. sure there's the one picture of something you created but then it becomes a thing that everyone wants to copy then you have people claiming your work, even if there were a prize involved I wouldn't do it.

Whoa slow down. First off, CR mentioned that they'd own your work; besides, its a contest so its basically volunteer work and a great way to get your name out there. If i were an aspiring manga artist, I'd definitely see this as an opportunity.

Not something I condone. This is basically a spec-based design competition and not to mention the lack of mention of any prizes.

What is spec work?

Basically, spec work is any kind of creative work rendered and submitted, either partial or completed, by a designer to a prospective client/employer before taking steps to secure both their work and an equitable fee. Under these conditions, a designer will often be requested to submit work under the guise of either a contest or an entry exam on actual, existing jobs as a “test” of their skill. In addition, the designer normally unwittingly loses all rights to their creative work because they failed to protect themselves by means of a signed binding contract or agreement. The client/employer often uses this freely gained work as they see fit without fear of legal repercussion.

Why is spec work unethical?

The designer in essence works free of charge and with an often falsely advertised, overinflated promise for future employment; or is given other insufficient forms of compensation. Usually these glorified prizes or “carrots” appear tantalizing for creative communicators just starting out, ending with encouraging examples like “good for your portfolio” or “gain recognition.” The reality is that they often yield little extra work, profit or referrals. Moreover they often must sign a contract unwittingly waiving their valuable creative rights and ownership of their work to the ones promoting this system. A verbal agreement is ineffective in protecting the rights of the designer in a court of law. As a result the client/employer will often employ other designers using similar unprincipled tactics to change and/or resell the creative work as their own. This also promotes the practice of designers ridiculously undercharging themselves in the hopes of “outbidding” any potential rivals, devaluing both their skills and those of the graphics industry in the process. Promoting this method encourages some clients/employers to continue preying on uninformed creatives for menially valued labor.

From No! Spec: http://www.no-spec.com/faq/

A better solution would have been to post up a 'work available' posting and invite aspiring artists to submit their portfolio. Then get the chosen artist with your favorite portfolio to do the mascot art.

I no longer believe in the whole "work for free to gain exposure as an artist" thing (that's what they all tell you, so that you'll WANT to work for free) but I believe that if you want to participate in this for fun and practice, sure.. go ahead!
