Is there anyone else who can't stand the 'straight man' humour in Gintama?
I love the series, its awesome, but the so called 'Straight man' humour kills this animes chances of being great and still they persist on contining with it. Straight man humour is both redundant and an overall buzzkill, especially in gintama where the straight man takes up for dialogue than the one-liners itself

For those who don't get what I mean, its essentially when a joke or one-liner is made, and then the straight man spends time explaining the jokes. Yes, thats right, they literally pause the action to take time to explain a joke because they believe you are too stupid to get it yourself. Gintama does this ALL the time, every, frikkin, bloody, dialogue exchange. And its not done in jest or in mockery, its literally left right and centre.

*Someone gets hit with mallet* - 5 second gag
Shinpachi: Oh no, he just got hit n the head with a mallet, where did the mallet come from? What is it doing there? How did it hit him on the head? - 20 second dialogue explanation explaining the joke you literally just saw.

Every....****ing....time...shinpachi....shut....the....****....up.

*Character ignores another character for the sake of humour*
Shinpachi: *will say this every line* Why is it that you are choosing to ignore this certain other character, what did they do to you did they do something to deserve it. - 20 seconds of redundant dialogue...repeated...every...****ing....time.

Do you people actually like this? You actually support this part of an otherwise fantastic anime? The ONLY reason people would need straight man humour is if the are too stupid to understand even the simppliest of jokes, with is concerning because it means that the cast of Gintama have little faith in the intelligence level of their own fanbase, how sad is that?

having a foil is good. they also play off of the straight man spazzing out a lot of times inducing more hilarity. i seriously doubt sorachi thinks his readers/viewers are dumb, otherwise how can they make all these obscure references and expect people to get them?

While I think it is funny, I do think that Shinpachi does go on a bit. Perhaps it is padding to fill up a little time.

The straight man probably exists in all cultural expresssions of humor. As an "Ugly American", I can point to some masters of the art of straight man and "second banana". Bud Abbot and Lou Costello, Geroge Burns and Gracie Allen, Jack Burns and Avery Schreiber, Oliver Hardy and Stan Laurel.

This kind of humor is often used in many animes in japan. Japanese humor and other country's humor are similar but different and Straight man humor is one of those differences. These animes are made to appeal to the Japanese not to people from other regions. Honestly they are not calling you stupid unless you choose to interpret it that way. It's just a type of humor found in other areas of the world, if you don't like it well then that sucks for you doesn't it.

Agreed. Personally I think leaving out the tsukkomi in Gintama would be like telling the first half of a joke and then never finish it.

agrees that it really helps lengthen the series, but i do like the humor as well. shinpachi sucks are regular joke so thats the only way he can be funny. only thing i don't find funny in gintama is stuff i find morally wrong. other than that its pretty flawless, though you can only take so much comedy before it bores the shit outta you. so yea i watch an ep a day maybe a week sometimes so that i don't get bored from it unless its in a major part of the arc.

You just basically insulted the basis of all Japanese humour XD That's just how the Japanese do their comedy I'm afraid. If you don't like gintama, you probably won't like any of it.

then here is simpler solution .. DON"T watch the show. The jokes aren't for the american or western market unless you are a had-core otaku I don't even watch the damn show but have seen plenty of Japanese comedies like hayate or excel saga to know that mainstream fans are not even going to get the simplest of jokes with out a reference to them. Again this is a personal thread on your thoughts and should be in a blog, twitter account etc because it's HOW you feel about it. When you create a thread you need to keep it open enough where there can be debate or another point view allowed.

^^^ couldn't agree more
It's not that the people are stupid it's just how the jokes go. Although I don't expect someone as narrow minded as OP to understand any of this.
