Most people I know all practically know about Dragonball Z even if they're not anime fans and yet Dragonball Z is the most talked about anime I've ever heard of, so what is the cause of its huge popularity worldwide because to be honest all I can say is that it was one of the first big hit anime's to hit our screens around the late 90s in Europe and yet there are even people whom haven't watched it that still know how popular the series was.

Feel free to lock if this is a duplicate.

I don't know. It was one of the first anime that I had ever seen. Also, when they told me the stuff I was seeing was edited and a lot of the good stuff was taken out, I found fansubs of it online. Haven't looked back since. Of course being in junior high/high school (not sure which) I told all of my friends about it. I also told them the stuff they were seeing on TV wasn't the REAL DBZ. Thus began my brief stint as a sub-only elitist. Also, the anime was just plain awesome and with teamfourstar it is kinda coming back into the minds of the people. If you have not heard of Team four star here is the whole first season :)

I'd say a big part of it was timing. Right place, right time. Another thing was probably a case of Foreign but not too foreign concept. The young male demographic love explosions, loves fighting and loves a strong male leads that are as tough as they boast, and it seems to be shared strongly between western and Japanese youth.

What has been said before also counts. Those who grew up watching it had that extra little, "Oh wow, that show you see on Cartoon Network, did you know that it is actually edited, they take out all the good stuff, it is actually even more violent and hardcore than what we see." Youth loves getting into something that makes them feel older, trust me, I know, I've been there. :p

Liberal fansubs also probably helped with the above mentioned point. Not only was a lot of violence and blood and guts left out, but then if you watch the ones with subs, you actually see bad words. Big stuff when you are young and trying to be mature. You eat it up. So to reiterate: DBZ came out in the right place, at the right time with the right subject matter for the right demographic.

*Also please note that my post is not a slight at young people by any means, and is merely autobiographical in nature.

As already stated for Americans it just happened to hit Cartoon Network at the right time. I mean it was around awhile on network t.v. before it hit it big, it use to come on at 7am on Saturdays where I live. What can you say boys love to see people beat others to a bloody pulp. And seeing blood on tv was/is pretty rare for American cartoons. Even the media took notice.

It was an excellent show, intelligence has nothing to do with action packed drama with a high sense of justice.

This logic is flawed.

Anime was not as well known even when Dragonball Z was running it's first few years. Some kids had no idea they were watching something from Japan at the time. They would not have known that there was a dub or even a different soundtrack either, thus they wouldn't be able to decide for themselves which was better until later on if they became more interested in it and knew about both.

Second here, access to subbed anime was fairly limited due to the fact that anime was not as well known. How could anyone hate a dub when that's all they knew or all they had access to? Today anime is fairly well known, is easy to access, and we know there are subs and dubs, and those people are able to make that decision to like or hate what they experience.

Third here, boys in particular like action. They want to see epic struggles of good vs evil with explosions and all kinds of battles. Typical, but that doesn't make them dumb. It just makes them normal.

Fourth here, some people still prefer to watch stuff in their own language. Not everyone enjoys reading a bunch of text at the bottom of the screen they're trying to watch. Is it hard to get use to? That's on a per person basis. So some are willing to overlook bad choices.
