I prefer to own as much as I can. I don't mind watching first via Netflix, Crunchyroll, or Crackle first to screen a show. However, if an anime really speaks to me, or I feel it's something I can watch multiple times, I will look into investing in the series. I can understand that Anime is an expensive hobby, but there's just something about owning a box set that I love.

I own all 3 seasons of The Last Airbender. But that's not japanese animation...

I plan on getting MLP:FiM season 1 boxset soon. As well as season 2 (depending on the condition of a certain episode) and season 3 when they come out.

I don't actually own any japanese anime on dvd.

I only buy the box-set if its something I really love or a movie that you can't watch on Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll.
The only box set I own is the platinum edition of Eva. As for movies a have Blu-Rays of Akira (first edition with black sleeve and art book), and both rebuild of eva movies. DVDs I have are Galaxy Express 999 (and the sequel), Fist of the North Star, EoE, Ghost in the Shell (1995 film), Street Fighter II, Metropolis, Steamboy, Paprika.
Can't wait for Eva 3.33 now!

My #1 preferred method of watching anime is to stream it on Crunchyroll. I can stream a 720p version that blows away the quality my DVD will get me and I find the HD stream good enough to make me not want to get off the couch and pop in a BD.

Having said that, I buy a good amount of anime each year, whether it be imports from Japan and elsewhere or domestic releases. I value being entertained and I feel obligated to pay money to support the creation and release of things that manage to get my attention. I never rewatch any of what I buy outside of select episodes of Bleach (really just 1) and select scenes from it and Naruto (and when I do, I watch via CR rather than use my discs) My collection is solely for financial support of stuff I like.

Yes, but not for everything. Mostly slice of life anime that I've watched before and love. I'll go for Premium Editions or anything like that since it just feels nice to know I'm supporting my favorite animes and that I have a nice version of it~ Even with SENTAI releases (which look like cheap booklegs) I''ll buy it if I like the anime.

This x 100. Sentai is my least favorite anime company. I don't mind when they grab stuff like Zettai Karen Children, Kurenai, or Book of Bantorra that has been available for a long time but it's clear that no other company has any interest in grabbing it, but I hate when they get anything that's not like 5 years old because...

#1 It may not get a BD release
#2 there won't be shit for extras other than commercials for other shows. Which Are (NOT) Bonus Content
#3 the packaging is going to be terrible and on par with like grocery store/gas station DVD that are like 2 for $5 of some no name 80s film that they they renamed to like "Furiously Fast" to trick some idiot into think it's a modern film of a similar name.

They recently picked up Amagami SS+ and it was a heartbreak because that show is pretty recent and they got the original series and it was successful enough for them to bother with the follow up, but they still cheaped out and went DVD only.
