Does anyone still buy physical DVD collections?
|
MatsumotoMania wrote: Yes. I do. My collection is nowhere near as extensive as the ones I've seen on here, because I only recently started buying things in earnest, but it'll grow over time. Right now I have Dragonball, NGE, Eva Rebuilds 1 and 2, Redline, and Astro Boy. Streaming is fine, but if I can help it, I really like to feel that I physically possess a copy of what I'm watching, be it on DVD or in a torrented file. So if I like a show, and want to support the companies involved, I'll put the series on my shopping list. DVDs are pretty clunky compared to files though, so I hope studios can someday find a profitable way to make files themselves available for download. That way your experience wouldn't depend on a fast connection (like streaming), and you could access the anime right from your hard drive as much as you want. On a side note, does anybody own a copy of End of Evangelion, or Gurren Lagann? I searched for both on Amazon recently. I bought EoE, even though it was out of print and the price was way up, but returned it because the disc kept freezing up my computer. And I got scared away from Gurren Lagann because of all the complaints of skipping and freezing on the discs. Is this your experience? Does the video have decent quality? Aspect ratios all preserved? No black bars on screens that match the videos' dimensions? Etc? http://www.amazon.com/Gurren-Lagann-Complete-Collection-Legends/product-reviews/B003P3PQNA/ref=cm_cr_dp_see_all_btm?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending From what I remember EoE English DVD release was pretty bad, the brightness was all messed up and sound effects replaced among other things. For Gurren Lagann the complete collection DVDs were faulty if I remember correctly, something to do with bad encoding. I'd just get the individual volumes if I were you, I got all of mine for $60.. but that was because I got the limited edition sets. |

That's a concern of mine. It's not that I mind black bars: far from it, I understand that screens have changed since then. No: my concern with aspect ratios is if a studio decides to artificially add in a set of black bars, enabling the video to fit the screen they anticipate most viewers will have. This is foolish, because if I have a screen that fits the original video, then by adding in their own set of black bars, my own screen just has to create another set of black bars, squashing in the video on all sides. I got very concerned when Amazon listed GL's aspect ratio as being 4:3, even though I know it wasn't. Did Bandai do anything weird with the release? |

Sorry for really late reply, but the Limited Edition Set DVDs (at least what I got) have an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and are enhanced for anamorphic playback. On a side note, I now have more in my collection: Gunslinger Girl (All seasons + ovas and manga), Time of Eve OVAs, Ghost in the Shell (All seasons and movies), and Soul Eater. I still buy DVD collections or singles every time I attend a convention. It's good to support the shows you love, or they don't stick around for too long =/.
Anyway, my most recent purchase was The Sacred Blacksmith [from this site no less, when it was on sale! HECK YES!] |
