I think sometimes they do it because the child seems to be lacking of something or gets distracted too easily, which is why a lot of people let their sons start school a year late.

I have never been held back even though I hardly did any work. They couldn't deny that I listened to some of the crap they had to say.

I had two friends who were held back one year. One was held back at kindergarten as she had lot of emotional problems (and still does but to a lesser extent) due to her parents' divorce and her gaining weight ( which brought on a lot of teasing... adding to the problem). My other friend was held back due to missing too much school as she had gotten chicken pox and whooping cough in the same school year ( 2nd. grade) . She missed about two months worth, so they held her back .

I would have been required to redo my Senior year had I not dropped out and picked up a GED instead. I did terribly throughout school because it was mind numbingly boring. There was so little that I actually learned from the teachers at school, that the entire 12 years could have easily fit into one or two semesters, with the exception of the foreign languages that I learned (forgotten by now, unfortunately). I just couldn't justify doing all the homework they gave, since I received no benefit from it. If it was a job, at least I'd get paid. If I had actually been learning anything from the work, it would have been worth it. But as it was, it was pointless and worthless, so I didn't do it. Acing all the tests typically got me C's at best. I went to college for a few classes, but didn't see any improvement - still far too slow, so I dropped it. It worked out for me, anyway. I still managed to get into the computer programmer work that I had intended to enter since I was 10 or 11 years old.

It's not like smart people like school any more than you dumb people. It's just that they're smart enough to know that since they're locked at school they might as well make that time productive.

I don't think Australia has this system, although I do know that you can go and do a "year 13" (third year of college) if you don't have the grades to get into a university. (which is what I did)

well i might get held back this year since i am failing math, french, science BADLY, but IMO i think schools gives us waaaay too much work, i mean i dont even have the time to study for a exam that i have to do in 3 days because there is one tomorrow and when i'm done doing that i have to study for all the other exams that are coming the next day

I've never been held back.
And this will be the first year I'm going to summer school.
I'm gonna be in 11 grade this August.

You're willingly going to summer school or you just had bad grades or?
