This is why I don't want to live on this planet anymore. It's bad enough that this goes on an ocean away from me, but it's now hitting home because of effed up politicians. This is something we DON'T want to happen, but it just might if we allow GOP to get its way.

Actually, you would be right if you were to only be referring to the Shi'ite Muslims which make up the majority of Morocco's population. Worldwide however, only 10-20% of Muslims are Shi'ite while the remaining 80-90% are Sunni Muslims who respect women far more than Shi'ites do by giving them much more freedom. At many points, the Koran expresses the importance of physically "punishing one's wife." The Shi'ites follow these guidelines whereas the Sunni do not. So it would remain true that most Muslims (80-90% that is) would agree that a direct and literal translation of the Old Testament which emphasizes the inequality of women would not be ideal in this day and age to apply.

Ah...while I agree with you that most muslims around the world are not as hard-assed as one would imagine, I'd also suggest that the Shi'ite vs. Sunni thing isn't the defining matter for what makes a Muslim into a fanatic.

For example...Saudi Arabia is overwhelmingly Wahhabi Sunni, and Saudi Arabia remains one of the strictest Muslim nations in the world, expressly living and governing from the confines of a narrow interpretation of Sharia law. Removal of hands for theft, beheading for converting to a religion other than Islam, and public stoning (though now mechanized, not done with guys throwing rocks) remains part of the Saudi penal code.

Similarly...Afghanistan is overwhelmingly Sunni -- and Afghanistan is a hard-assed nation with strong tendencies to stick with Sharia law.

Oh, and your claim that Morocco is Shi'ite? Um...no. Morocco is overwhelmingly Maliki Sunni (http://www.nationmaster.com/country/mo-morocco/rel-religion), with a tiny Shi'ite minority. In fact a couple of years back, Morocco and Iran had a bit of a diplomatic mess because Morocco accused Iran of sending in Shi'ite missionaries.

Side note...most people who have been around would consider Morocco one of the more progressive Islamic nations...not as much as Turkey, for example, but definitely up there. Alcohol and bathing suits on beaches aren't uncommon.

I'm a little curious if this particular incident is indicative of an Islamist resurgence in the nation, or more representative of the more backwards/'traditionalist' types that live deeper in the rural areas of the country.

My apologies. It would seem that I did in fact get my sources mixed up. According to what I've read so far, Maliki is one of the more smaller sects of Islam, which I can only assume is a slightly more radical form of Islam, although not quite as racial as the Shi'ites. In the more larger sects (like the Hanafi), women are granted more freedom. The rights of women vary greatly from culture to culture and some have more than others which does not change my initial main point that "Some culture have [little or] no respect for women or their God-given freewill."

Also, my second main point regarding the Old Testament remains intact. Religion most likely played a part in this tragedy. However, regardless of religious affiliation, male dominance in general is more to blame than religion. Furthermore, Christianity (the world's largest religion), Judaism (who I know do not treat their women like crap), and the more woman-friendly sects of Islam (in which women are given rights where tragedies like this are less likely to occur) would, for the most part, agree that to directly take Old Testament quotes of female inequality literally and possibly radically (because that is in fact how many cults are formed) in this day and age would not be an ideal thing to do.

I am not saying all this to win some kind of religious debate or to engage in any battles of whit. All I am trying to do is get my points across in the most proper way that I know how.

Anyway thanks for correcting me on that. I very much appreciate it. Who knew I would learn so much on the CR forum.

Right, RIGHT. What the fuck is wrong with that country. It's not just the judge it is the thinking and way of living of those people. Do they not have a speck of empathy/humanity in them? What, is this country ruled by a pack of wolves who do not respect women(or themselves)?

If I ever land my ass in Morocco. I would go to a public hearing, kick the judges in the nuts and then ... get arrested and die in prison probably... Okay I need a better plan. But I will do something goddammit.

In some places Rape does not exsist(according to men) The woman(victim) is the criminal.

A. she invited it
B her face fell into their fist
C she's unpure
D her father or brother now can beat her to death
because she's no longer a virgin and can't be sold to some 70 year old pervert
who weds and beds children

If we are lucky as the caring small mass in the world, we should hope for the worlds end. Reasoning?.... So those who cannot enjoy life may know peace and hopefully a bit of happiness at a rebirth of a new world. Humans are the single cruelest beings on our planet and seems after all the years of "evolution" a lot still have yet to learn anything moral.

On odd note, wolves actually care about their pack/community. Humans however are whole different breed of non respectful species =( Still dislike how much injustice is around in world. Think that is one of many reasons I haven't associated with many people and as years go on I speak to less. I find animals are more loyal and caring tbh.
