Lately i've been observing players, and their skill in game. Usually by end game most people have a idea how to use their character's build/playstyle at a optimal level, but then there are others whom having maxed characters still manage to play as if its their first day in game, and it boggles me. So I wonder, what makes a player good?

I'm not a elitist nor a hardcore gamer, I don't buy naga mouses or G19s to make tons of macros, i actually bought a gaming keyboard/mouse recently just for cosmetic reasons. But I am a VERY serious person when it comes to competition, and I love character development.

I believe however, that there are natural handicaps present that prevent players from using their characters to their maximum potential, one of these factors being a players stress/anxiety threshold. A lot of people crack under pressure, and with PvP or Raids being a highly stressful ordeal these can usually handicap a normally good player from preforming at their optimal ability.
Being calm and collective during PvP Can usually increase your chances of winning, especially if a rogue/stealth character gets the jump on you, I witnessed this myself. Rogue characters in most MMOs can be considered shock-n-awe archetypes, because of high DPS and out of stealth burst. This causes a player to "WTF!" and start mashing the wrong buttons. Being calm lets you apply the correct counter measures to ensure your survival. In my honest opinion, the best way to get around the stress/jumpy/anxiety part of games is to simply relax, chill, collect yourself, try to make yourself ready for every situation.
My Grandfather told me when he was serving in the marines that a person who is nervous forgets and questions what they are fighting for, and eventually lose their will to fight.

Something else that is a big factor in a players ability is experience and their tactics. After playing for awhile, you start to take in other peoples strategies. For example, you start to realize that everytime that mage uses a slow on you, hes going to run away and unleash a much more powerful spell on you from further away. So instead of using your charge as a initial starter, you wait.

What do you believe makes a player good, or what keeps someone from actually becoming a good player?

Red Dead Redemption is one example.

I was playing against a clan of 8 players all x5 legend level and they were attacking me 8 against one. Whenever I killed one of them they'd be like "omg you gotta hide behind a tree to kill me? You little bitch." and stuff like this. EXCUSE ME! They were the ones who had to team up into 8 to fucking kill me. Hypocrites! That game is full of idiot players.

What makes a good player is:

Respect
Showing true skill by putting away your fucking rapid-fire pistol and facing me with a rifle instead.
Not sniping me from miles away because you're too much of a pussy to take me one on one.
Not swearing and calling me everything JUST because you got your ass served to you on a plate by a girl.

Funny. Ironically, I got the same QQ while using the rifle in Red dead, the only game that made me actually go out and buy a Ps3 just to play it (Im a Die hard PC gamer).

Respect does make a player good, when they can live up to their mistakes and better themselves, and accept defeat. Like the old saying, "The person who demands all, receives nothing"

Skills obviously.

Knowing when to engage, when not to, best way to engage, etc.

Well since I only play League of Legends/ Armored Core V for team based games.

Same applies for non team games, xept practice does make people play better, experience on the other hand is the best way to improve. So play a lot of games, learn from every game, and don't play for fun, play to win.

Internet Connection. If it sucks...don't even...
Hand Eye Coordination.
Reaction Time.
Knowledge.

And finally. Kill Death Ratio. If it's not at least a 1.5 or above. WTF are you doing?! GTFO!

xD Nah but seriously. You're only as good as the people you play with. Or against. And damn to the people who rage at you for using or doing something considered overpowered.

Adapt or die. Unless it's like seriously broken. Then it should be patched... and if isn't getting patched. Then you best be starting a facebook group and raising money for a childrens charity until it does get patched!

...I forget my point.

I agree with this, no matter what the game in question is. Be it a game such as Red Dead Redemption, Marvel VS. Capcom 2, GoldenEye 007, Pokemon, Super Smash Bros., or whatever have you.

Besides skills, patience and determination. Giving and receiving respect is another and being observant in the game.

Aside from the traits mention above me. In a team game, cooperation and coordination is the key to victory.

No matter how well equip or how good you are, if you fight alone and uncoordinated you'll end up dead without achieving anything.

In no particular order but I suppose an emphasis on experience then;

fast twitch reflexes - (can be improved but this is largely determined at birth)

good hand-eye coordination (can be improved but this is largely determined at birth)

good motor skills - (can be improved but this is largely determined at birth)

experience - the only one on this list that does not depend on natural gifts/talent
