Why is this series coming out now? Is this a special pre-season episode or is it starting proper?

I would put the odds of Eureka Seven Ao being on CR at around 50%, with the chance of it being simulcast somewhere else at 20-30%.

Even though Crunchyroll has the original series? Is this being published by a different company?

Yes. The original series was not a simulcast, and was sublicensed from Bandai.

i feel like ive seen this series before...... future.....desert planet..... giant mechanical thingies. If i took the time to name out every series with those plot points i'd be here all week.

The scenario is from an unfinished work that dates back to the 1980's so the concept would have been a bit more fresh at that time.

Zetman is on YTV and from TMS Entertainment, so I would say odds are good.

Space Bros. (Uchuu Kyoudai) is on YTV/NTV, both of which CR has a relationship with, but it is from A-1 Pictures, which often results in licensing being handled by Aniplex. While that by no means rules out CR getting it, it does make for the possibility of Funico getting it instead.

olandril wrote: Actually the chances of Crunchyroll getting Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka? series 2 is quite likely. Sora no Otoshimono, Strike Witches, and some others had their first series licensed by Funimation, and Crunchyroll still managed to stream the sequels, which were also later licensed by Funimation. It's probably in the contract that Crunchyroll has first dibs on streaming sequels.

There is, however, no standard contract. According to Sam Pinansky at ANN, the licensors do tend to just swap in the terms of the previous contract ~ but still, the terms that made it into the original contract between Crunchyroll and different licensors will vary. I don't know who the publisher of that series was, but you'd want to look for precedents among other series published by that licensor.

One major point, of course, is that unlike Crunchyroll, Funimation does not bid for every series. Just because FUNimation licensed one series does not automatically guarantee that they will pick up the next one. If FUNimation has not decided whether or not to negotiate for the series until after the season starts, then Crunchyroll would have an open field when they are bidding for streaming rights before the season starts.

That is why bringing up Strike Witches and Sora no Otoshimono is especially appropriate; like Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?, they are Kadokawa properties.

Thus far, the only precedent since the Funico joint venture was established was the second Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi series.

As far as I understand, this is a six episode series, so they seem to have just decided to launch it at a different time than the regular broadcast season premier week.

Aha, so you'll flip-flop like a flounder on the pier if it turns out that you were forming your opinion not only ridiculously early but also turned out to have been jumping to the 100% wrong conclusion. How generous!

Just to be clear, I am not making fun of you for stating your opinion, I am making fun of how absurdly prematurely you form your opinion. Except for people who's season is made by the three already announced, forming an opinion of the season at this point is point and laugh funny.

As far as preferring the zombie show and the rehash of Eureka and Saki to this classic old-school SF anime ... well, there's no accounting for tastes. That's the advantage of Crunchyroll's "try to get them all, take whatever is offered" approach.
