My condolences to the young man's family. This is why I dislike majority of the police force in this country. =T

Likely more of a case of stereotyping than an actual hate crime but either way there should be a serious investigation in the matter.

Sounds like an overly zealous neighborhood watch dog who say a black kid he's never seen before and instantly assumed he was up to no good and shot him.

It's not just the Southern states but it's all over.

And it's not as well publicized but all the races are just as racist towards each other so racism isn't just exclusive to white people.

America can’t grow as a nation because of the exact reason you just presented. Race is an uncomfortable subject for everyone. It brings up past relations that most would like to pretend never happened. I on the other hand, engage in such politics because I believe they’re important to the advancement of this nation. For in order to understand each other, we must first acknowledge the overwhelming disparity among all of us.

Most would like to believe race plays no issue in such matters. As much as I would love to have such an optimistic mindset, we cannot ignore this country’s apparent racial tensions. I don’t see how this crime wasn’t racially motivated. It’s obvious throughout the article what this man’s intentions were. This boy was racially targeted. What reason could there have possibly been for shooting an unarmed teenage boy with a bag of skittles in his pocket?

This all the way. Ignoring the issue isn't going to help us move past it. Confronting racism (and sexism, and homophobia, and bigotry in all its forms) by calling it where we see it (and demonstrating, as a society that it is unacceptable) on the other hand, might. There certainly seems to be less *overt* racism now than there was say, 50 years ago.

Another thing is, instead of waiting for police, he decided to confront the “suspicions individual" on his own. Explain to me since when are Neighborhood Watchmen given guns? Let alone allowed to confront “suspicious individuals?” And aren’t most Neighborhood Watchmen supposed to know who lives in their neighborhood? How did he not know that there was a black family who lived there?

As for the article, it just proves how pathetic the American legal system is. This man should not be allowed to walk free.

Although honestly, I'm pretty much okay with the private ownership of guns. And speaking generally (and not about this case in particular), I sort of think the standards of evidence and guilt we have in America should be, if anything, higher. And that might mean I need to be okay with the occasional guilty person being let of the hook, even if they're guilty of some of the worst crimes that it's possible to commit.

The guys who are *really* into Neighborhood Watch do seem to pretty much be creepers though

So they're leaning towards self defense? A dude thats unarmed going up against a dude that has a gun.... I don't think you can even claim self defense on that bs

The only racial thing of note so far is that the kid was black. Why do people always jump to the conclusion that it was a racist crime? I think that is very ignorant. Can't ever grow up as a nation with people thinking like that. If there were more evidence to prove it I would agree, but I don't jump the gun like most seem to do.

It goes both ways at this points losing People come in with huge chips on their shoulders because of something that happened 150-200 years ago. Listen what happened with slavery, KKK, NRA this incident etc is horrible . However the fact of the matter NAACP isn't helping nor is parading around ones color and using that as an excuse. I don't care what the color, religion, sex or race a person i solely judge a person based on who they are as a person. Was the boy racially targeted... well i can't get into the mind of an old white man but their is highly likely chance however we don't know unless the younger brother is willing to speak about this. Do i personally believe it was... well from the facts given there is a 85-90% probability it was since it was a gated community. Should this man be walking free... hell no there is enough evidence to detain him to look into the case as a homicide, it's just nice to know detectives have stop thinking.
