Just wondering what your take on scanlation is, since the recent drama around MangaStream and Red Hawk having to drop all series from Weekly Shounen JUMP I've been somewhat intrigued by the entire topic. I feel that ViZ didn't really take the right course of action, yes they now provide JUMP Alpha but the quality is more often than not somewhat appalling, their releases are late and last but not least it isn't available anywhere outside of the US & Canada.

Having MangaStream and Red Hawk drop the series didn't really accomplish either, people will not suddenly subscribe to JUMP Alpha because of this. They merely opened up the series to other scanlators as before there really was no competing with the 2 big groups. If anything they should have gone after the big aggregator websites like Mangafox and MangaReader as that is where most people read it anyway and that will be where the series will now mainly wind up, scanlated by other groups.

Don't get me wrong, if there was a decent and more legal alternative (ie: crunchyroll for manga ) I'd subscribe in a heartbeat but as of right now there really isn't. And simply denying people access to the series in JUMP seems like a rather premature dick-ish move by ViZ. Either way, that's just my take on it. I'd love to hear what you guys think about it.

Unfortunately, fans don't have the right to read or download free translations. Please remember that with very few exceptions, most comics creators are trying to make money from their content.

As far as I know, companies and creators can assert the rights to their intellectual properties. They can decide that fans should not be permitted to translate or otherwise modify their works.

sort of

as I understand it Red Hawk is using a loop hole. they are still scanlating stuff but they aren't distributing anymore. they are just storing their copies on a server for their own personal use and if someone like say Manga Fox happens across said server, yoinks their copies and then posts it on their own site, "ah well, not our fault"

where I come from it's called "Playing Silly Buggers."

So they aren't actually sending it to say Mangafox, but rather just leaving it at a place for them to pick it up?

I think that's the gist of it. basically Editing and translating isn't illegal, only distribution is. As long as Red Hawk doesn't distribute things themselves they are sitting in a nice legal grey zone.

Mangafox or anyone else who distributes the stuff the Red Hawk has worked on however run the risk of lawyers.

I think anyway. Not 100% up on how the laws work but I think that is the gist of it.

as I said It's a game of Silly Buggers

here is what Red Hawk actually has said

Dear Readers,

Some of you may have anticipated this development after the recent events at Mangastream, but we are sad to report that Red Hawk Scanlations has received a DMCA notice of copyright infringement from Shueisha with regard to the Bakuman and Beelzebub series. We have no desire to pick legal battles, so we have removed the series in question from our servers and will no longer be providing access to them via our site effective immediately.

However, aggregate sites will undoubtedly continue to distribute material as they please, independent of our actions here. The act of editing manga itself is not illegal, and we have no control over what is distributed on other servers. Meanwhile the Red Hawk site will continue to serve as a hub for updates and discussion as we continue to pursue our passions without engaging in the illegal distribution of these series.

In short, these series are not dropped, but they will not be found on our servers.

Sincerely,
Red Hawk Scanlations

It's given me a very large number of phrases that cause people to give me funny looks

I did spend a year in Newfoundland though as a kid.

We American read scanlations because the availability of manga here is garbage. Yes we have Shounen Jump but Most of the mangas I read(A lot are the most popular read now) aren't available there.
