I agree. I feel most anime could go on for many more episodes, but end at only 12. It's kind of annoying. I miss the 25-6 episode animes that used to come out. Feeling cheated here.

Not enough source material (manga, novel).

Not enough budget.

The first season could be doing bad (financially of course) and they realize that there won't be budget for a second thus they just wrap it up with the first season.

Either way, if they never make a sequel it's usually because the first didn't make enough money (usually in Japan, USA licensing tends to be pocket change in the anime market, unless it's DBZ, Pokemon, and such).

Not enough money, nobody watches it in Japan, no one supports it, not enough money, other projects are going on, they went too fast and aren't ready to continue it right away, etc... I don't really know anything.

Plural for anime is anime.

and basically what Underlock said.

Sad that the Berserker anime didn't get enough rating to continue. Then again, the mangaka is SUPER slow in releasing chapters, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

In September 2010, a wraparound jacket band on volume 35 of the Berserk manga announced a new anime project. The project was later revealed to be a series of films intended to adapt the entire manga, starting with three films adapting the "Golden Age" story arc.

Source.

This could last a decade or two.
I'm gonna grow old with Berserk.

Yeah, it's sad but true. It all boils down to money. Many great stories and shows never to be seen or continued becuase of it!

Eh, better a limited run (quitting while they're ahead) than endless streams of filler.

The money! And if in Japan the Anime is not very popular they will most likely not continue it even if it is Popular in other countries, Ex. High School of The Dead.

But.... Why u make Angel Beats! 13 episodes long!

when you're about to make an anime, you sign a contract on x episodes and in x episodes depending on how well the anime does you get the idea.

if you like harem anime with low key plots "no pun intended" play or get hold of the viusal novels and get more of satisfying endings that you choose.
