Akuma smiled widely as she came home from a small shopping trip. It was very close to her's and her sister's birthday and she had bought a present for the two of them to enjoy together, at least, she knew she would like it because she had heard a lot about the beautiful story and art from Key Animation.

As Kai was sitting in the room and saw Akuma coming from her trip around town, she walked up to her and said, "Hey, Akuma. Just got home from shopping, huh?" Then she started to notice something from the bag, "Hmmm...So what's the occasion?"

Akuma smiled a little, "Angel's and my birthday actually. I thought me and her could watch a anime together that day to celebrate. I picked up the three Key Animation shows. I think she saw them but I never have."
As she spoke, Kurai walked down the stairs from the second floor 'apartments' he had decided to move up to and looked over at them, "What the hell are you guys doing in the doorway?" he yawned as though he had just gotten up from sleeping, which of course he had.

"Well, Akuma was talking about the gift she got for Angel for their birthday", Kai said to Kurai. ".....and personally I think it's sweet that Akuma want to get a gift for her....um....um....Sorry, Is Angel the older or younger sister?", Kai said to Akuma, "I can't really tell the age difference and all."

Akuma frowned, "She's older...... by a couple of minutes I believe. I don't exactly remember though since many of my memories really haven't come back..."
Kurai jumped a bit, "W....Wait a minute..... when was that?!" he seemed as though Kai had struck a small nerve of panic in his mind. He had completely forgotten all about that.
Akuma looked at him a little confused, "Sunday... why do you ask? You should know this."
Kurai blushed slightly in embarrassment, "Uh, Ya.... that's right. It only slipped my mind a moment..." then he quickly walked from the stairs to the kitchen and out the back way.

"OOOKKKK.", Kai said awkwardly as she watched a panicked Kurai leaving the room and then turned to Akuma. "So about those Key Animation anime. Which one did you buy? Air? Kanon? Clannad?"

Akuma smiled, "Clannad was my first, though I did get all three. I never seen any of them before. You can join us if you like to watch them, just come up to our room. I'm sure Angel is taking a nap. She's a night person more," she started walking to her and Angel's room.

"Sure", Kai said, "I was eventually going to watch this with---", She wanted to bring up MAK but then she figured it wasn't the right time for that, "I mean, yeah, I got the time to watch Clannad with you.", she said as she smiled at her. "I'll be sure to not wake up Angel on purpose or accident."

"Don't worry, I'm going to wake her to watch..." she said beckoning for her to follow.

When they got to Angel's and Akuma's room, the place was actually rather interesting to look at with its dark blue walls and Burgundy trim. It was slightly a mess, with art items all over the place and tons of papers. On the walls were many shelves full of mismatched items like anime figurines, Japanese items, vintage glass dolls, statues of angels, and tons of books and DVDs. Right above the bed was a alter to a wiccan goddess that Angel believed in with many magical items sitting there.
Akuma walked over to the lump on the bed under the covers and gently woke Angel who popped up, hair a mess, and moaned slightly half asleep, "What is it sis?" she asked, her voice a low moan.
"I want to watch a anime with you and Kai... that ok?" Akuma asked sweetly.
"It's fine.... pop it in the computer..." Angel yawned and slowly pushed items off the bed for the girls to all be able to sit there and watch the show.

Kai took a look around the room and its surroundings and thought to herself, "Wow, and I thought my room back at home was messy." She then sat alongside Angel and Akuma to watch Clannad.

Clannad(Oct 4, 2007 – Mar 27, 2008), Kuranado
Director: Tatsuya Ishihara
Drama, Low Fantasy, Psychological, Romance, Supernatural,
Key Words: Bishojo, Moe, High School, Slice of Life,
Studio: Kyoto Animation Licensed American Publisher:

Episodes: 23+1OVA

Tomoya Okazaki is a 3rd year high school student whose mother passed away when he was younger from a car accident. Because of this, his father started drinking heavy and gambling there money away. The two ended up fighting and Tomoya left after being injured by his father so bad that he could no longer play basketball which had became his life. Since then, he has stayed far away from him, becoming almost delinquent over time. But, as he went to school one beautiful day, he meets a girl that was a year older named Nagisa Furukawa. Even though she is older, she was very sick and so had to repeat a grade making her in his class. Many of her friends had moved on, so the two started to become friends, making Tomoya think differently about the world.

My Thoughts: The story feels a lot like Air: 1000th Summer, with its pretty slice of life with an air of magical sense. It also has the idea of another world though this one seems a little forced. They never really explain this other world except that it was a story but it has no merit to the rest of the show. You can think about it all you want but the story feels… somewhat way to simple and where it is a really good story for the touchy feely person, it seems to have a very small fan base.

The story feels like a harem, but its not, feels like a magical girl show, but its not, and a lot of other things though not quite there. It seems like it is trying to be something that it’s not and never quite making it. Most of the show is them dinking around with little side stories and so it feels like they have no motivation in what they set out to do. Most of the time, they end up just adding more characters and don’t flush them out.
I really wonder what the point of Fuko is though. I do get the feeling that she is just there for a bit more moe but the strange thing is, she should be gone with her problems are over, right? So why does she pop up every once in a while after what she needed to do has been accomplished? She’s like the ghost that has finished its business on earth but never passes on!

The art style is so beautiful that I do have to just watch it for that. It’s not as clean and well detailed as 5 Centimeters per Second, but again, feels much like Air. The characters fit in to the different stages of moe, excluding the glasses wearer though since I don’t think Key has ever even placed a glasses wearer in their games. As with the personalities, you can pick each girl out just by looks alone even if you can’t remember there names. As the story gets dark, the art style does change a bit as well, helping the feeling along.

The voices now are not all good. Most of the English voices are nice that the ones that don’t are barly noticeable so it does have that going for it. The music is rather sweet and innocent which adds to the moe feeling in the whole show and the ending song gets stuck in my head to this day. I can understand that family is a big part of this show but I think that the Big Dango Family song should have only been a inside the story song and not really a ending song but the animation is pretty good with that again. (Still cannot stop seeing the Hetalia mochi creation someone did with that song.)

Rating:
Dango Dango Dango Dango the big Dango Family…….. UGGGGGGGGG……

Sherlock Hound(Nov 6, 1984 – May 20, 1985), Meitantei Hōmuzu, Famous Detective Holmes, Detective Holmes
Director: Kyosuke Mikuriya; Hayoa Miyazaki
Detective Fiction, Comedy
Key Words: Anthro,
Studio: Tokyo Movie Shinsha; RAI Licensed American Publisher:

Episodes: 26

Sherlock Hound and Doctor Watson are a team of Detectives who live in London, England in the boarding house of Mrs. Marie Hudson. Sherlock is always brought into cases for his extremely large knowledge of multiple fields including Chemistry and the study of crime. Most cases he is placed on seem to be the work of Professor Moriarty and his henchmen (Smiley and George/Todd) who even their bumbling have never been bad enough to be caught by Inspector Lestrade and Sherlock Hound.

My Thoughts: I love this anime ever since I got it from my local Library. I found it by accident while looking for a different video (which seemed to not actually be there) and so picked it up.

At first, I thought this was going to be serious like all the other Sherlock Homes creations out there but this is like a children’s version of the story. It feels strange to see Professor Moriarty actually taking part in the crimes instead of just having his henchmen doing it. It pulls away a lot from the normal story line with the difference that each show can pretty much be standing on its own and you don’t need much to understand them. It’s like a crime of the week and I don’t remember if there was any that actually went 2 shows long.

I like how whimsical they make the story and it has some of the feel as the real Sherlock Homes, although they don’t really let you try to piece together the crime yourself which makes me rather sad.

I never really liked the music to it but I love the animals being portrayed as humans. Though sometimes the dogs look like cats such as a very small boy in one of the episodes. I wasn’t surprised when I found out that Miyazaki actually helped create this show even if some of it wasn’t the greatest.

Rating:
The story is pretty and it is somewhat close to the Sherlock Homes story lines.

Episodes: 366

Ichigo Kurosaki was just a normal high school delinquent with problems both at home and school. The only thing that sets him apart is that since he was little, his spiritual power was so strong that he could see spirits rather well. Because of this, he normally always has at least one spirit following him around. One day, his spiritual power attracted something worse called a Hollow. Luckily, he meets a Soul Reaper (Shinigami) named Rukia who tries to help defeat the Hollow but ends up in danger herself when she is wounded. In order to save his family, Rukia gives him her power as a Shinigami but something goes wrong. Instead of taking a fraction of her power, he ends up taking almost all of it and it’s not going away even after he fought the Hollow. Now he’s stuck as a Soul Reaper, doing Rukia’s job till her powers return but it seems something more is going on in the Soul Society.

My Thoughts: The show is really well done… for the first part. Then it, like Naruto, Inuyasha, and all the other shows that have a very strong plot and went on for at least 100 episodes or more, it plummets to the ground mostly after the first arc has happened and the second is starting. The characters seem to have the stereotypes that are normal for a high school, the strong silent type with a good heart, the ditsy large breasted girl, the delinquent… each one is pretty much in the stereotype that they were placed and barley ever come out of their group in a sense. Sure they are all friends (for the most part) and hang out but it seems just as though they are a gathering of the world’s strangest pairings.
The only one that really seems to break this is with Orihime Inoue who becomes one of the team but sadly, most of the time, it felt like she was more of a weight to the other characters. Now she does try to break that, being a kind person that she is but I stopped watching it anyway and rather not care if she was or not. It was like every time she did something, she would get captured…
Now, it falls short of being a favorite for me because once they got off the story line with Rukia and the Soul Society, it felt downhill and became like a Naruto to me. The story kept going on so many arcs that I felt they had no clue where they were trying to go and it just took way to long to get where they were going. I did try to keep going with the story and keep watching but I just fell to the boring feeling. They were doing a good job with the music, animation, story line, and characters and if it was shorter and maybe about the same size as Soul Eater, then maybe I could stay onto it but I had much more anime I wanted to watch and figured it would be better to watch them then one I didn’t go into.
It also just got to the point that there was too many one timers in the show and I couldn’t keep them straight. You have the first few characters, Ichigo’s friends and family members, as well as his classmates, then Rukia, then the whole Soul Reapers group. You got the Bounts, strange vampire like characters, the Visored, the Xcution… and then all the others… UG!
The animation is really good and the characters are fun and lively. It’s bright but rather perfect for the little comedy that was placed into the show. I’m not sure where they got Ichigo’s hair color since his sisters and Dad doesn’t have it and his mother was a blond, but yet, he has red hair? Orange hair? Ya well… still don’t get it. I’m at least happy that so far, the characters I had seen all had normal hair color except for some characters in the soul reapers groups but I am willing to let that go at this time.
Voices seem perfect for the characters, from Johnny Yong Bosch as the bad boy Ichigo to the sweet and gentle soul of Stephanie Sheh’s Orihime. There really isn’t anything more to say on that.
Music is rather nice, though there are over a million openings and closing it seems (ok… over reacting but still) plus the background music that gets annoying after a while when it’s played way too often. I think that they should have had a couple of pieces instead of one going off every time one scene got strange.

Rating:
I’m being nice to it but really, there is too much of it!

Black Heaven(July 8, 1999 – Oct 7, 1999), Kachou Ouji: Hard Rock Save the Space
Director: Yasuhito Kikuchi
Adventure, Comedy, Sci-fi, Drama,
Key Words: Slice of life, Space, Rock and Roll, music,
Studio: AIC Licensed American Publisher:

Episodes: 13

Once a heavy metal legend known as Gabriel, Oji Tanaka is now an average 40-year-old guy, living an average life with his average kid and average wife. Well... he’s bored of the average life and longs for his glory days of being a almighty Rock God. Luckily, he’s going to get a lot more busy now that an alien race has there eyes set on him. There special weapon will only be activated by his music and they need it to destroy the enemy.

My Thoughts: I started watching it and in first impressions, I did wonder what the hell I was watching. It’s heard to rate something that does not have a definite feel to it and this one seemed almost all over. It’s a slice of life with a lot of other things mixed into it and it just feels… off a bit. It’s not bad, but its not good ether leaving it in what I call no mans land along with a couple others that I have watched. The characters are rather likeable, Oji not really being my all time favorite but I think it really wasn’t created for my age or gender. This feels more like it was made for those that were about 30 and up men that are in their mid-life crisis and find out that they lost several of their glory years stuck behind a desk. It’s something you might have to just go though before the character stands out.

In this story, it’s a rocker who just wants his old life back after having it cut short. Unlike slice of life, he has to fight an alien race in order to save the planet and all with the power of his rock. It’s not a school boy or girl in trouble with love which is really different.

The animation is all over the place. The characters look almost abnormal in how there bodies are created, Oji’s chin seems to fall off when he’s surprised, and all sorts of things happen. There is a lot of fan service and a lot of drama because of it.. If you’re going into this for amazing battle scenes, forget it. When there are battles and it isn’t much, most of the time it’s the weapon going off to rock and roll and mostly just the guitar. The rest of the time, its mostly slow images of life.

The music, you really have to be the judge of. It’s alright for the 90’s but not really present day music.

Rating:
Not really my style, but its still pretty good.

Tactics(Oct 5, 2005 – Mar 29, 2005), Takutikusu
Director: Hiroshi Watanabe
Supernatural, Comedy, Drama, historical Fantasy,
Key Words: Japanese Folklore, detective, occult,
Studio: Studio Deen Licensed American Publisher: Manga Entertainment

Episodes: 25

Within the time of the Meiji Period, it is a chaotic time where the old Japanese world meets the new world outside its shores. The people turn to science and technology in order to explain the world around them, but some still face the monsters and gods that were part of their heritage and folklore.
Kentarou Ichinomiya grew up being able to sense the goblins, spirits, demons, and gods around him. As a child, he would be constantly harassed by the people around him and wished to be stronger. He hears of a ‘demon eating goblin’ whose power is rather strong and so he goes out in search. He soon finds him and names him Haruka so that he must listen to Kentaro’s every whim.

My Thoughts: Oh wow… That was what I first felt when I started watching this show. This is not the show I had originally planned on seeing but when I did end up seeing it, from the very first episode, it just gave me chills. And then… the comedy hit. Now this wasn’t a bad thing really, it was just unexpected. I went into this story without any history behind it or any way of knowing what it was about and the first part of the show was so serious.

Now I love the characters, even if they are pretty much stereotypes. Now I keep saying stereotypes but its more like stereotypes but its more about what is normally in anime. A weakling boy goes out and finds a strong partner in order to fight against evil and is almost always being saved by this person. Kentaro may seem smarter then most of them but he is still pretty much the same. I can probably set the main characters into three groups, Yoko is the bitchy house keeper who isn’t really a main character but a secondary character no mater if she has her own episodes or not; Kentaro, the pushy, whinny kid who tries to get what he wants but with a pure heart; and Haruka, the jerk who sulks about his past. They should familiar, right? They are in every single anime almost.

Now saying that, why do I love this show so much? I’m not all that sure the whole reason why I am but I know it is how the characters make you just fall in love with them and how they act. You can understand each of the character and the position they were placed into by luck or chance. Sadly, this also has a feeling of a yoai even though it isn’t (and the fan girl in me goes but why not?!). I mean, this may be a tiny bit of a spoiler but Haruka only awakens when Kentaro says his name almost in a love sick voice with a tear.

The animation is pretty standard with one or two hiccups along the way, mostly in consistency between to places which is not really all that bad. The characters have this strange piece of hair that sticks out and wraps around there head like a halo of some sort and tuck into the other side of their head and it seems a little off. Also, some characters feel like they were slapped together and not really thought out much. Some of the animals also lack any real look to them, in fact, Yoko is supposed to be a older women but yet she transforms into this strange little chibi fox that does not have much of anything in terms of realism.

Oh god do I love the music. It’s lovely to say the least and has the feeling of the time period as well as the supernatural aspect for the show. The background scores can get a little annoying but not enough for me to have to turn it off. This show is really a treat for its time even if its not seen as the best in everything.

Rating:
I so love this show.

Abunai Sisters: Koko and MikaOVA(Jan 15, 2009),
Director:
Action, Comedy, Ecchi,
Key Words: Boobs, sexual theme, 3D,
Studio: Production I.G. Licensed American Publisher:

Episodes: 10

The story follows two celebrities, Koko and Mika, as they go through some super agent gags in a 3D animated world.

My Thoughts: Um… this one was pretty much seems really more like Hentai without the sex. The episodes are really short but just seem really really stupid. I don’t understand what exactly the ‘gag’ part is in this. All I see is two girls with large breasts doing a bunch of jumping and crawling around, with one acting like she’s jerking someone off as she is shaking a bottle of Champaign. This is not funny! It’s just sick and wrong looking.

The animation looks cheep but I can tell they did put a lot of work into it, even if it does seem like they shouldn’t of. Everything looks pretty plastic and toyish, the girls look like Brats dolls with large eyes and big heads. Their lips are way too puckered and make them look like they had a lot of plastic surgery. The movement is somewhat alright, I didn’t notice to much problems with that.

Music and their voices seem like they were best for a porno. In fact, if you are old enough, close your eyes and just listen to it and think what they are doing. Ya… It’s just not my thing to have my shows full of that stuff.

Rating: Not even giving it one star. It’s not really worth the time.

.hack//SIGN(Apr 4, 2002 – Sep 25, 2002)
Director: Koichi Mashimo Written by: Kazunori Ito Music: Yuki Kajiura
Sci-fi, Adventure, Fantasy, Mystery,
Key Words: Computer Games, RPG,
Studio: Bee Train

Episodes: 26

Tsukasa is child that liked to play in a fantasy quest type adventure game known as ‘The World.’ Somehow, his mind was trapped one day and he couldn’t log out. Not only that but mysterious things are happening to him in the game including being the object of interest of a player that had altered his character to have the face of a cat. It is up to him to find the Key of the Twilight, an object thought to be able to bypass the system itself and turn The World upside down.

My Thoughts: The show thrusts you into something that they never give you any real information for. The first episode has us meeting Tsukasa, him running, then him getting asked questions from the crimson knights, not answering their questions and running from them, then a very very annoying talk with our almost silent hero and a whinny girl. Then he runs from her to the snowy area and a tropical area… you start getting the picture? He just runs away from everyone! And this is almost what happens throughout the show. Well, running away from people or chasing after a strange cat character. When we get into the second episode, we get Bear talking to our first whinny girl about someone who they both should not have the name of and Bear wouldn’t have the information of Tsukasa not being able to log out.

The story is slow and definitely not like a real rpg game. Normally you would not stand around and talk for hours on end like how they do it. That would be a good way to get attacked. And that’s not the only problem of this show, they talk but they don’t really say much or they think you have already had the knowledge of the games already. This must seem like a good idea for the creators of the story since a lot of anime that are based on games do this but it’s not really that great. When the game is not translated over or when it’s harder to get, it really throws you off the anime since it leaves more questions than answers.

There is another thing that just feels out-of-place. The opening has a women dancing around a virtual world but from what I know of, she is never an actual character within the world. She seems very out-of-place.

The artwork is rather wonderful, very clean and crisp. The world is bright and colorful, not much flaw in that part. The movement when there is some seem right for how normal games are played though this is mostly a still images show, more on the line of talking again. The characters mouths move is most of the animation that happens.

Um… the voices now are just a little off in the English dub. Tsukasa’s sometimes sounds like a girl and sometimes like a very young boy. Almost every time though, he sounds emo and whinny. All the girl character sound rather high pitched and sometimes ‘monotone’ when they speak. Actually every character is dry monotone with people pretty much just stating fact after fact, even when they shouldn’t really have that knowledge in the first place. It’s so close to the Japanese dub that they always seem to go ‘this can not be happening’ like they are just computer voices. It gets slightly better later on but it’s just too late then.

The music is actually quite good depending on what song you pick out. I like many of the gentle violin/celtic songs that are in the background but I wouldn’t watch the show just for those. I would rather listen to the soundtrack then since its better then the voice acting sometimes.

Shugo and Rena are two twins who were separated from each other. The only way for them to be with each other is to play in ‘The World,’ a online video game. Rena entered them both into a contest and they won the characters of the .Hackers, legendary characters within the game. After they first came into the world, Shugo was given the Twilight Bracelet and they both must learn the mystery behind it.

My Thoughts: Well… here we go again. You would think that with this long, they would have been able to figure out all of what was going on so that the new characters wouldn’t have that problem. I have a problem with the characters, the Shugo and Rena are brother and sister, but Shugo keeps getting the hots for his sister’s character. I know that it’s not her but come on; it’s still bothersome since we don’t see them in the outer world except in memories. Also, tell me why they have to call out each others names when ever they are in trouble? It’s really really un needed.

The characters look really kid-ish, and not like SIGN, and it’s a little annoying. The colors are way too bright and odd for how dark the show is supposed to be. When I want to watch something that is pretty much part of the same sequel, I would have liked them to look like the original. A lot of this just seems like it’s made for the fan service and objects.

The Beginning song isn’t really anything special. In fact, I just pretty much figured I could just skip it since it was a bit annoying. In fact, almost every bit of music that is in this seems to be off. During battles, there is this strange music that sounds jazzy. It makes everything feel like a joke. The English voices, although a bit cute, some of them sound way too cutesy and squeaky. It’s just really harsh to my ears. Some of the characters seem like they have the wrong voices and so bothers me a little.

Rating:
I’m really not interested in this, and I don’t think I ever will be interested in any of the .hack shows if this keeps up.

Catblue Dynamite ONA(Dec 22, 2006),
Director and Writer: Romanov Higa Music: Koji Matsuo, ping pong music, Rei Kudo
Fantasy, Action-Adventure,
Key Words: 80’s detective, Nuevo, Mystery, violence, cat girls,
Licensed American Publisher: Organic Co. Ltd

Episodes:

Blue is a cat girl out to find the killer of her master from when she was a cat. She can see spirits and interrogate them with her partner, the spirit John Doe.
When two friends get caught in a mob race for a missing Sinatra tape they happen to get there hands on, Blue steps in to save them but in return, the wants info on RedBird.

My Thoughts: The story starts out feeling like a gangster movie from the 80’s, and then suddenly you see supernatural things about the world like a cat girl and ghosts. It’s interesting to say the least since I never saw something like this before. It took me a while to get into the story because of how really out of control it was but I soon actually liked it. It’s got a very different story line which keeps my interest. There was a joke that did get annoying after a while with the black guy always calling his partner brother and the come back. It got old fast in the first episode.
The animation is rather interesting, using 3D with the cartoon-shader. It looks better then most shows like this but still has some problems to me. It just feels way to Miku Miku Dance to me. The textures are nice though when they do have them, not really over bumped. The world around them looks much better then the characters although the characters do look interesting. The camera shakes at odd times, making it feel a lot like a movie. It went a little odd when it went into the floating in the air fight.
The Music and most of the talking feels like the 80’s, which is good since it does help with the theme. I’m not always so found of it but it’s not really all that bad when it works well with the show itself and most of the time, it’s just set in the background. But I don’t understand the little tweeting sound that happens sometimes when they are fighting. The voices actually fit the characters rather well to me and I love that about it. I have to say I think that if it was in any other language other then English, it would lose something.

Rating:
It’s pretty good and worth to at least look at.

Dark Side Cat ONA(Dec 19, 2006 – May 13, 2008)
Director:
Action, Fantasy, Comedy,
Key Words: Fights, cats, cat boy, slice of life, anthropomorphism, Parody,
Studio: Fanworks

Episodes: 6

Dark Side Cat is a strange cat person who is the leader of all the stray cats. When the mayor creates a law stating that he would get rid of all the stray cats, he causes a bunch of havoc for no apparent reason with Kiki, his cute black cat side kick.

My Thoughts: Darkside cat is a strange, interesting show. It’s pretty much about a rebel humanoid cat that gets in trouble a lot with the law. In the course of one evening, chasing after a mouse, he breaks a fire hydrant, creates a traffic jam, and runs from the police. Now this show doesn’t really follow Dark Side cat but really what happens because of his interactions with the people of the city.

He himself is always silent with the same ‘bad boy’ look in his eyes and yet there are times that he actually does seem nice, mostly to the cats around the area. Each story can mostly stand alone, having only Dark Cat to link them together except for 5 and 6 where they pretty much have to be seen together. It’s more talking about the people that he touches and not really about him. One thing I do wish is that we could get more info on Dark Side Cat instead of only hearing very little about his past in Episode 5.

The animation looks like it was created with flash, and its actually really well done as well in that nothing really seems out of place. They have really nice shadows and make them look perfect the dark night that is pretty much the base of the shows. My only problem is that in the animation, there is a character that seems like she would be a man character in the stories but she barely shows up. Action scenes contain a lot of speed lines and still images that seem like Speed Racer at times.

There is barely any talking and more sounds and music which are actually pretty cute. It works well. Basically, I wish there was more of this show.

Rating:
It’s worth taking a look at least though I wouldn’t say go out of your way to watch it. It’s only 6 episodes and they are pretty short.

Sketchbook(Oct 2, 2007 – Dec 25, 2007) Suketchibukku
Director: Yoshimasa Hiraike
Comedy,
Key Words: Slice of Life, Art,
Studio: Hal Film Maker

Episodes: 13

Sora Kajiwara is a very shy high school student who loves to draw. She always carries around a sketchbook to capture cherished moments. She never uses a camera or video to capture them because what are really special are the unspoken feelings of her artwork that come out through the gentle colors and lines.

MY Thoughts: This is a very slow show, but beautiful in its simplicity. The story follows a artist who is just too shy and sits and draws pretty much all the time. In this way, I feel rather close to her in that respect. As an artist myself, I can understand her feelings and so this story really hits home for me. Even though it’s a slice of life, it doesn’t rely on crazy over the top comedy, and goes for the very slow and cute gags that make it almost a opposite to Azumanga Daioh or Lucky Star.
Now there are some things that really seem bothersome to me though, for instance, most of the characters seem a little dumb and eyen Sora has her times when she does get annoying. I normally do have to ask myself just how shy do you have to be till you’re stuck in the house the whole time. I can tell she is trying to be around people but still, even with her friends, she seems shy.
The animation is rather sweet and pure, a bit like Azumanga Daioh in that sense. The colors are bright pastels and give it a relaxing mood to the story line. It’s a treat to watch just for how the animation is.
The music fits the mood, again rather sweet and once in a while, it made me feel rather sleepy because of how gentle it was but I think it’s rather nicely made.

Rating:
I feel in love with the gentleness of the show and Sora as a character really spoke out to me.

The World God Only Knows(Oct 6, 2010 – Dec 22, 2010), Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai
Director: Shigehito Takayanagi Written by: Hideyuki Kurata Music: Hayato Matsuo
Comedy, Romance, Supernatural, Fantasy,
Key Words: Moe, Ren’ai, School Life, spirits, dating sims, Parody,
Studio: Manglobe Licensed American Publisher: Sentai Filmworks

Episodes: 12+1 Preview OVA

Keima Katsuragi is a 2nd year high school student who is a avid dating sim player. He isn’t interested in real girls and is able to pick almost every right answer to the story line of a game so he can get the good ending. One day, he gets a email that offers him a challenge to ‘conquer’ another girls heart. Thinking it to be in the game, he accepts and soon is bound into a contract with a demon from hell named Elsie who is capturing loose souls. Loose souls are within the hearts of people and only come out when someone else enters into their heart. That is mostly in them falling in love. Now he must try to conquer real women’s hearts or get his head chopped off.

MY Thoughts: This is a really fun show. I actually really like it even if it’s about something I’m not very interested in, dating sims... Now, I understand the leer that people have to them, guy gets girl with simple questions and answers. Unfortunately, that isn’t real life, and so I can never understand those that are stuck within the gaming world. That’s why this show is so hilarious to me and makes me want to keep watching this.

Keima is rather strange and interesting character, only interested in video game girls instead of real ones. The strange thing is, when he actually goes for getting the heart of real girls, he actually gets them. I guess it helps that he lives in the anime world anyway because most of what he pulls actually wouldn’t work. It’s funny because of all the cheesy lines that he uses and stocking the girls around to see their lives. I don’t know about you but if a guy dressed like a young Austin Powers reject was following me around, I would call the cops.

Elsie is… I don’t know how to explain her really. She is childish and crazy; most of the time she messes things up when she tries to do anything. The only thing she is really good at is cleaning.

It’s like his world itself is a dating sim because no girl in our world would ever go for the cheesy things he does from banners to strange stockings that he does. All the girls are pretty unrealistic stereotypes but it actually works for the story plot. The only episode that felt really bothersome was episode 4 with the loop. It only felt like it was there to show Keima’s personality a bit more.

The artwork seems rather good although it is really bright and ‘chubby.’ A lot of times, they seem like chibi’s or plastic doll. The ghosts look like strange blobs and seem odd. There’s not much I can say about the artwork since its pretty much like any other slice of life that has come out this around this time.

The voices are really interesting, and its fun hearing the English Sosuke Sagara from Full Metal Panic talking about dating sims! That’s right; Chris Patton is the voice of Keima Katsuragi. And his supporting character is Luci Christian’s voice, which also is the voice of Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic as well. She plays the Spirit Hunter by the name of Elucia de Rux Ima. Its strange hearing there voices in here because they the characters here are almost complete opposite the characters they did play in Full Metal Panic. Another opposite is Hilary Haag who not only plays Tessa from Full Metal Panic, but Mio Aoyama, the rather short and prideful rich girl in this, and the shy Shiori Shiomiya who is more like Tessa in a sense. Basically, if you love the English voices of Full Metal Panic, you’re probably going to like the English voices here.
I actually really like the opening song; it has a rather nice beat. The ending is alright, though not as good as the beginning.

Rating:
I love this show! It’s really fun show and I look forward to the next season!

Black Lagoon(Apr 8, 2006 – June 24, 2006), Burakku Ragūn
Director: Sunao Katabuchi
Action-Adventure, Crime Fiction, Black Comedy
Key Words: Pirates, guns,
Studio: Madhouse Licensed American Publisher:

Episodes:12

Rokuro Okajima is a Japanese businessman who gets his butt kicked everywhere. So when he gets a job taking a disk to the south China sea, he thinks everything was going to be smooth sailing. He was wrong.
Turns out the disc had harmful information for his company and the band of pirates/mercenaries called Lagoon Company is after it. When he is considered dead by his company, he decides to join the band of outlaws.

My Thoughts: This is AWESOME! I fully love this type of crime fiction where its pretty much out of control. The characters are so great that I really wish some of them would have more story lines for the other characters instead of always focusing on Revy and Rock. Don’t get me wrong, Revy is great and all, but Benny and Dutch seem just as interesting as her even without them flashing taint all over the place. (And please don’t… I really don’t want to see that part.)
Just as it is, it does feel a bit unfinished, the story line does have a couple times where they go off topic and the this season, they pretty much do odd jobs, they don’t really do anything note worthy until late in the game. They are almost non realistic, though they do have a lot of realistic banter within it. They tried to make it as real as it could without making the show boring. Also how Rock pretty much changes his look from Japan to pirate.
The Animation feels nice, like a cross between tome raider and gangster movies. I love how they separated the very formal world of Tokyo with the wonderful bright colors of the China sea. Animation is pretty well done and the action is wonderful. Really nicely well done without much 3D if anything.
The music is kick ass! The opening it really well done and gets your blood pumping for the amazing out of control ride this show is about. The ending though… well… it’s nothing great. I mostly found myself skipping it since it wasn’t really fitting the show. The slow moving walk was really odd and didn’t fit Revy at all.

Rating:
Everyone should watch this!

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya(Apr 2, 2006 – July 2, 2006 (First season) Apr 3, 2009 – Oct 9, 2009 (Second season with re-broadcasting)),
Director: Tatsuya Ishihara
Comedy, Sci-fi, Low Fantasy,
Key Words: Time Travelers, Espiers, Aliens,
Studio: Kyoto Animation Licensed American Publisher:

Episodes: 28

Kyon was a normal high school boy, doing normal every day things and like most normal high school boys, he gave up on all the fantasy and beliefs he had as a small child. That is... till he meets a beautiful young women named Haruhi in his class and his whole world turns upside down. Haruhi wants nothing more but to meet any and all strange supernatural beings and will pull anyone she can grab into her little club to see them. Was it fate that brought him together with her? Or was it just his luck to be considered part of her group? And will he ever help her settle down?

My thoughts: This is one of those strange little shows that to me; is a gem. If you start watching it, it might be rather strange because of the order that is given to you. The first episode 00 is not really the first. It’s the episode that the group makes later on in the show. A lot of shows are like that, in the wrong order. When it aired is a nonlinear way known as Kyon order. It almost makes no sense and so I suggest that you watch them in the Haruhi order which if you are looking at Kyon order number, it would be 2, 3, 5, 10, 13, 14, 4, 7, 6, 8, 1, 12, 11 and 9. What does piss me off though is that in 2009, they added a new season, but it is supposed to be mixed in with Season 1 that added additional footage and dialogue to the story. It means that I have to rewatch the whole show again with the second season and try to put them together.

The feel of the show is like a Nuevo, and it’s nice to have Kyon’s thoughts on the whole idea of Haruhi’s antics. I don’t think I would be able to stand this show without his calculated thoughts and it would go into Azumanga Daioh mode I think. I really do wish I could hear more about his background and about his little sister. Every once in a while, she just seems to pop up out of nowhere and doesn’t seem to be part of anything. She could just as easily been left out instead of having her in the show. There were also times when they lost me, talking a lot about logic and philosophies in the characters who are around Kyon. I can understand when It’s Yuki, maybe even Itsuki but when Mikuru starts talking logically about time travel and then suddenly goes into ‘That’s classified’ thing, it just gets annoying because it doesn’t seem like her character.

The animation is pretty good, though it’s pretty much the same as almost any other school life with the rather clean artwork though they have constant hair-los even in the dark. It’s this nice little shine that went all the way around there heads. It’s a bit annoying in that aspect. The background is pretty washed out and the people stand out really nicely against it being bright. There is a lot of fan service, especially with Mikuru and the strange outfits that Haruhi forces her into. I have to say, I would have thought Haruhi would look a bit more out of control looking then what she looks like.

The voices in the English actually are much better in my mind but that is just my opinion. I can understand them much better if I don’t have to read the sub titles and not only that, Wendee Lee is a great Haruhi! I love her out of control voice and right next to Crispin Freeman’s cool and collected voice, it sounds really well done. Much like yin and yang. I’m not really sold on Stephanie Sheh’s Mikuru. She seems a little too timid and high pitched. It’s also nice to hear that Johnny Yong Bosch as Itsuki with a cool and collected character instead of the hot headed thugs he seems to be known for.

After Watching Endless 8
After watching part of the endless 8, I feel that you can probably just skip most of it. It pretty much made me go insane and I can probably say Kyon’s internal monolog by heart now… Ya… not doing that again.

Rating:
I’m in love with it even though the episodes are a problem to me. I have so many problems figuring out which is supposed to be what.

Nozomu Itoshiki is a very pessimistic High school teacher. Where some people would see the world as a glass half empty, he sees the world as if the glass had shattered and the milk was three days spoiled.
One day, as he tried to hang himself yet again, he was saved by a rather optimistic young girl named Kafuka Fuura who believes that no one would kill themselves on a wonderful day. Turns out that she is in his class and with a lot of other weird children.

My thoughts: The show is really depressing, but funny as well. I guess you could say this is a show about laughing at other people's pains. Almost everyone seems to have problems in this. I guess you could say that it’s like Ren and Stimpy, Ugly American, and Moral Oral all rolled up in one. If you don’t like those shows, then you probably might not like this because even if it’s not really disgusting, it is rather dumb for funs sake. The whole show pretty much is like a long conversation with the branches into other ideas and such, and mostly feels like it's actually critiquing the Japanese government and culture. They love to play into the mind of the characters so it does get a bit odd and not always in the realistic fashion.

The characters and everything are really a whole play on words, their names meaning pretty much there personalities in Japanese. This does get lost to people who do not know any Japanese and how it’s written. For instance, when you write down Nozomu Itoshiki’s name western style, it becomes the word “zetsubou”, meaning “Despair” hence the name of the show. It goes on with Rin Itoshiki, his younger sister, who when written horizontally becomes “zetsurin” (“unequaled”), Mikoto Itoshiki, his brother, who resembles “zetsumei” (“Death”), and Chiri Kitsu, one of his students, whose name is created from the word “Kitchiri” (“Precisely”) shown when she tries to make everything equal, and also has the kanji for “senrigan” (“Clairvoyance”) and she does show she has psychic principles. The same is done with almost every character although I will not put all of them here because there is a lot. There is no short to characters in this and it’s sometimes hard to keep all of them straight but it seems most of his female students fall in love with him at least in one point.

The show has a lot of the same feelings as Welcome to the NHK, being very abstract and out of control though the animation is rather dark. Many times, I had trouble seeing something because it was so dark. The feel is that of a film being played along with the way the characters are dressed and some of the items around, it makes the show feel older than it is. The only times it really is bright is around Kafuka Fuura, probably to show how optimistic she is all the time but pretty much everything else is either washed out of has a layer of sepia tone layered over. All around the place, there are strange little writings on the walls and in the background that spout little nonsense that means nothing to the actually story line and every time the camera turns back to them, they are different. It’s a interesting little piece. There is a lot of fan service, especially for the American girl and a very strange guy who shows up everywhere in the most random places. It’s normally just a little circle with some guys face in the center and it could be in the background or covering something up. It’s not an anime face but a photo that is placed there which is just really on.

The music is rather odd, and I guess fits with the show though it’s kind of hard to talk about it. I really want to see this dubbed because it's really hard to read all the subs and look for the little tidbits that are in it.

Rating:
It would get more stars if it was dubbed I think.

Supernatural: The Anime Series(Feb, 23, 2010)
Director: Atsuko Ishizuka (11 eps) Shigeyuki Miya (11 eps)
Drama, Supernatural, Romance, Action, Horror,
Key Words: Gore, Blood, Ghosts, Tragedy, folklore, demons,
Studio: Madhouse Studios Licensed American Publisher: Warner Bros.

Episodes: 22

Sam and Dean Winchester are two brothers who run around and hunt demons, monsters, and supernatural phenomena. This is a re-imaging of the original live-action series of Eric Kripke’s first two seasons of Supernatural. It show cases the best episodes plus bonus episodes not seen depicting their childhood and original enemies.

My Thoughts: This is a creepy show. Having not seen the live-action show before, I don’t know if it does justice to the show or not but I have to say, I really like it any way and it does make me want to see the original show. The episodes all have to do with someone dying in a gruesome way, then the brothers’ end up being at the right place at the right time. Each show is its own storyline without many things to link them together. The story is slow, and not really action orientated. Many of the shows act more like detective shows where something odd happens and they discover why only to have a small action scene at the end. There is a larger mystery that they have in this show about the brothers trying to find their Dad.

The art style is rather interesting, almost a cross between anime and American comic book style. The characters are hard edged, and a lot of dark lines and heavy shadows that pretty much are black. Everything has a nice vintage feeling, sort of grimy in a good way. The characters look like the characters from the live-action as well which is what I would wish to see unlike some of them. Sadly, some of the images are pretty frozen, still images that feel like cop outs, especially when this was made in 2011.

The English voices don’t feel up to par with the animation, and feels a bit forced and doesn’t match the lip sink most of the time. They talk when the mouths are closed and part of it might be to get information out since this is shorter then the actual show. Even then, it just feels rushed and makes it a little hard. I really love the ending song though. I never thought I would hear “Cary on my Wayward Son” by Naoki Takao fit so well.

EDIT: I have now seen the live action show, I really like it as well. The show has the same creepy feeling and the same slowness that the animation has. The stories are altered slightly from the original but that’s partly because they were putting a 1 hour episode into a half a hour one.

Rating:
This is actually pretty good even if some things are off. Voices aren’t right in the English voices not matching and the story line is rushed.
