Filler. Hands down with no doubts about it because it's either going to be win or neutral.

Filler can be good for some shows. The last two filler arcs of Bleach were way better than most of the canon material of the series and they hold some of the best animated fights/episodes that the series has ever had. When filler is good, it's a win. If the filler sucks, I just stop watching it and it effectively will be on hiatus for me.

Try telling that to the narutards aka Naruto fanboys, the anime would have better animation for the battles unlike the Naruto & Pain fight

That's a pretty poor example considering that the fight was like an entire episode of near movie quality animation.

Fillers = Continue Support to the Anime and the Industry.

Hiatus = A double edge blade that might either KILL THE ANIME or MAKE IT 100% BETTER.

-----------------------------------------------

I prefer Fillers, Why....Simple nobody is forcing you to watch them or not...Is just a temporal road while the anime and manga have some distance. I watch every filler and If I don't like it it goes as background noise while I work.

Practically, if they have someone interested in funding the filler, it'll get made, and if there's enough money to fund the manga material but not to fund fillers, then fillers won't get made. So there's no need to fuss about which is "best for the industry" ~ the industry will look after itself. The only exception to that would be if there's money to fund a long filler arc but the original creator doesn't want it created.

We'll find out in a year's time whether Gin Tama is setting a new pattern for the industry, running a year on and a year off, or whether its going off the air permanently. Given its DVD/BD sales and manga tankoubon sales, I kind of doubt that its going off the air permanently.

And if they do come on for another year's run, Sket Dance would be a natural series for it to trade-off with.

If Bleach comes back, it'll be because the end of the manga is coming at a date certain and they think the finale to such a long running series can get a few more people to tune in. Naruto's also going to be winding down soon, though whether the anime will run out of money before the manga finale concludes is anyone's guess. But if they catch up before the end and nobody is interested in funding another run of filler, they'll be in a very similar situation to Bleach right now, with the series ending and nobody making any promises whether it'll be back and if so in what form.

Going from Shonen Jump to Weekly Shonen, Hunter x Hunter has the episodes in hand to not worry about it for years, so the core of the long running series on Crunchyroll this time next year could be Hunter x Hunter and then Gintama and Sket Dance trading places every year.

Filler for sure; especially for ongoing series, OMGEPIC arc into OMGEPIC arc gets so very very tiring, for me the filler feels like fun back-to-basics from the beginning of the series before things got so overwrought.

Hiatus, it's better if they allocate their budget/money to continuing/progress the story instead of wasting it on fillers.

Depends on the filler. Some filler is just actually really good but some is just terrible.

Filler and I'll go further and say I like Bleach's style of filler where they didn't even pretend that it was part of the main storyline thereby not screwing up like Naruto Shippuden does.

I mean if you don't like filler you could always, I don't know not watch it? That would be like an hiatus, it can't bother you if you aren't viewing it.

"weekly shonen" and "shonen jump" are the same magazine in this case, are they not? how can you go from one to the other?
unless you mean shonen sunday, which does not serialize hunter x hunter.

when not on hiatus, hunter x hunter is serialized along with naruto, bleach, one piece and many others in weekly shonen jump.
and yes, the anime could go on forever, but the material isn't really that good, the series has long lost its charm and has gone waaay off track.
The manga could have actually ended in the chapter right before this new "hiatus" that togashi announced last week, it would have been a great ending to a series that doesn't even deserve it anymore, but I guess if it sells well even togashi can't decide when to quit (and let's be frank, he does want to).

Now, about the topic:

I tend to dislike story arcs that do not follow the manga, I would actually say that I hate them IF IT WASN'T FOR THE FIRST FMA. People tend to disagree with me, but i find that the first full metal alchemist series is way better than the second (if not the best anime tv series ever made), especially the second part (which does not follow the manga).
Well, maybe FMA is not the best example, since it isn't actually a "filler", just a different continuation to the story.

I believe that with some effort a studio can pull off a decent original story that doesn't upset the fans, but I haven't seen anything remotely good in a long time.

Ah, I knew there was a long running series on Crunchyroll that I was forgetting ~ its Fairy Tail that's in Weekly Shonen Magazine, not Hunter x Hunter.

Yes, a weekly manga magazine for teenage boys is going to keep buying stories that keep up the rankings, and the manga-ka has a strong incentive to keep cranking out a manga that keeps selling tankoubon.

FMA shows the third option when the anime based on a long running manga catches up to the manga: freeze, fill, or fork.

So this is what you call near movie quality standards of animation?

I prefer hiatus, and you have pretty much summed up why. The One Piece Anime is terrible right now and they really need to go on hiatus. One chapter per ep? Are you kidding me?

Well if you think about it, doing one chapter per episode will result in no filler arcs. Yeah we get some filler scenes added during the episode, but it's better than going through a filler arc. I don't want to go through another Apis arc if you know what I mean.
I would've liked if the One Piece and Naruto anime took a break before their respective time skip, it would've raised the level of interest just like how the manga took a brake before the time skip. I believe One Piece took a month off and Naruto had the kakashi chronicles and then went on break for three weeks I think.

Hiatus definitely. I've seen so much great animes burned down by the stupidity and drag of the fillers. But not all fillers are bad, it's just the good ones are rare to get by. I think if you're a fan, no matter how long the wait would be you'll still stick to the anime.

You have no clue what animation is if you think it can be judged by still frames. People confuse art style for animation on too regular of a basis. Even still, 2 second of funny art style negates, 24 minutes of awesome animation? Don't be ridiculous.
