Lee Yo-won and Jo Seung-woo star in The Horse Healer

Lee Yo-won (49 Days) will be returning in the new MBC medical sageuk The Horse Healer, starring Jo Seung-woo (Go Go 70s, Tazza) as the titular horse whisperer. I could have gone with Dr. Horse, but that sounded more Mr. Ed, and less historical epic drama.

The production will be helmed by the team behind Dong Yi and Yi San — writer Kim Yi-young and PD Lee Byung-hoon. (PD Lee is most famous for directing Dae Jang Geum / Jewel in the Palace.) Jo Seung-woo will play Baek Kwang-hyun, a person born to the lowest class who starts as a horse healer, becomes a renowned veterinarian, and then eventually rises to the position of royal doctor. So he goes from treating horses to treating the king? Pretty impressive.

Lee Yo-won plays Kang Ji-nyung, his love interest. She lives an unpredictable carefree life, and takes an interest in the study of medicine, eventually becoming a doctor who treats the common people. Her character is described as a very progressive woman in the Joseon era. Lee said herself that the character is like a cross between her characters in Queen Seon-deok and Surgeon Bong Dal-hee. Lee has a backlog of films to finish shooting first — Total Love and Fists of Legend — before joining the drama production.

The Horse Healer plans to premiere in September on MBC.

Lee Sang-woo in "The Horse Healer"

Actor Lee Sang-woo is attempting at a historical for the first time in his acting career. He's been cast for the new MBC drama "The Horse Healer". "The Horse Healer" is produced by Lee Byeong-hoon and written by Kim Ee-yeong, and is an oriental medical drama about the values of a generation and history.

Lee Sang-woo will take on the role of Lee Seong-ha, a handsome and intelligent man who forms a three way relationship with Baek Gwang-hyeon (Jo Seung-woo) and Kang Ji-nyeong (Lee Yo-won).

Baek Gwang-hyeon and Lee Seong-ha will create a rival route against each other as Lee is the son of the man involved with the death of Baek's father.

This is Lee Sang-woo's first historical since his debut. Lee claimed, "I am very nervous about this drama and I am going to do my best to show you what I've got". The chairman of his agency says, "This will be a turning point of his acting life. He is busy analyzing his character".

Meanwhile, "The Horse Healer" has a cast of Jo Seung-woo, Lee Yo-won, Kim So-eun, Yoo Seon and more and is to be aired after "Lights and Shadows".

'Horse Doctor' Reactions After 2 Episodes "Can't Wait For More" vs. "What A Disappointment"

MBC 51st Anniversary Special Project 'Horse Doctor' placed last after airing its first episode on October 1st. The reactions of the netizens were split between "it's interesting" and "it's a disappointment".

After the second episode aired on October 2nd, one netizen listed the problems with 'Horse Doctor' and said, "The male child actor does not know how to act cute. The outside lighting makes me think I'm watching an old movie. Also, the lines are all cheesy and the editing is choppy. Is this drama really directed by Lee Byung Hoon?"

Other netizens have also stated their disappointment on the message boards. They said, "The childhood casting is not particularly good", "'Dong Yi' was also boring in the beginning; this drama feels the same", "I don't expect the ratings to be high for this one", "There is a lot left to be desired for start of this drama", "This drama feels old-fashioned", and "It doesn't have a trendy feel to it at all."

However, there are a lot of words of encouragement as well. There were plenty of kind words like "The childhood actors, they're pretty decent", "It has a Lee Byung Hoon-feel to it so I like it", "I am more excited to see Jo Seung Woo and Lee Yo Won act", "It's more fun than I expected", "I have good feelings about this drama", and "I look forward to watching more episodes."
