Which anime shows had the best endings?
Posted 3/27/12
This past week was a pretty sad one for me, since a lot of awesome shows ended.

I think that endings play a fairly important role in the overall quality of a show. Just curious, which shows do you think have the best endings?

Standalone movies sometimes end well:

* Princess Mononoke. Like most of the movie, it's not black-and-white, and there's been a lot of needless death. But despite everything, the film ends on a hopeful note.

* Summer Wars. The crisis has been averted, and several main characters are working out their relationship problems. Their lives will continue, and they will probably continue to grow.

* Grave of the Fireflies. For a movie that's genuinely tough to watch, the ending is a real punch in the gut. An excellent film to rent.

* I liked about half of the King of Thorn movie. But even though I thought it went off the rails after 45 minutes, the ending was not bad. It's definitely bleak, but it looks like the characters are ready to face the world.
---

As for OAV series...

* Gunbuster. The original OAV series is all over the map, but it wraps up with an epic sixth episode. Two words: "WELCOM3 HOME."

* The first El Hazard OAV series. Like the Tenchi Muyo series, it's a harem show combined with several other genres. But unlike much of the Tenchi franchise, it has a quality ending. (There was a second El Hazard OAV series that was instantly forgettable. The Alternative World TV series was terrible, and the Wanderers TV series should be ignored.)

* The Magic Users Club OAVs. A stupid harem comedy with just enough plot. The characters are not powerful, and their relationships are all tangled up... so you get to watch them try to fight aliens. I liked the ending. There's a decent TV series that picks up after the OAV series, though it's mostly filler.
---

Finally, as for TV and manga series endings...

* Full Metal Alchemist manga and Brotherhood TV series. Among the best shonen magazine series, with endings that don't disappoint.

* Slayers Next (season two). I like Slayers in general, but it's quite uneven. The second season of the TV series had the best pacing and ending.

* Cowboy Bebop doesn't have much continuity or plot. But it wraps up surprisingly well in the last two episodes. One word: "Bang."

* Azumanga Daioh is slice of life. If you think that a simple ending where every character graduates would be boring, then this series' ending may change your mind.

* The Hikaru no Go manga ending is not bad. The TV series stops about 2/3 of the way, and I liked it a bit more. While the series has plenty of competitive games and a few tournaments, that's not the real reason to follow it. Focus on the title character's growth. Stick around for the "Where is Sai?" story arc and witness a really good portrayal of loss and reconciliation.

* The Mahoromatic TV series ending is kind of surreal, but it's definitely conclusive. Track down the manga for some better explanations. After a number of filler / fanservice / slice of life episodes, it's refreshing to see this series focus on authentic plot and drama.

* My Lovely Ghost Kana. Haven't heard of this manga? Then search for it. Definitely an R-rated series (mild sex scenes and relationship drama), but good writing throughout. It ends well in volume three.

* The Kyoto arc of Rurouni Kenshin was very close to ending well. (I thought the villain's death seemed cheap.) After this point in the TV series, you can pretty much ignore everything else. After this point in the manga, there's the halfway good Revenge arc, and thankfully the manga ends on a conclusive and positive note.

Strawberry panic, why cause it is yuri, also because it was an anime that had an ending scene with a love couple.

I am a sucker for romantic endings that end with the couples together, in the last scene.

Hm, this is actually a hard question. I forgot a lot of endings for animes I've seen.

For a funny ending, I'd say Level E's was hilarious, or even Nichijou.

Romantic ... I'd say Amagami SS Plus or Special A.

Not sure how I'd classify this one, but Katanagatari had a pretty good ending.

Sad ending ... Moshidora. I won't lie. I cried in that anime. I'd also go with uhh ... Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shira nai.

Lots of good ones. Code Geass might have my favorite ending to anything ever.

Angel Beats! also has one of my favorite endings.

After those, probably Steins;Gate. Although it could have been better, it just seemed to wrap things up pretty well, and it's pretty hard to make a great ending. Most series do a pretty good job though

I recall being pretty pleased with Gosick as well.

I also agree that Angel Beats! has a good ending.

Others I would say would be:
FMA Brotherhood- I liked this ending a whole lot better than how the original ended.
Gintama-it was soo funny and random just the way i like it with that show
Bleach- I thought the ending for the anime was pretty good though I guess you really couldnt call it an ending since the show will be coming back later
Diamond Daydreams is another one that i can think of other than that i can't really think of anymore at the moment i've seen soo much XD I'm sure i can think of more later.

I liked the Steins;Gate ending(even though a lot of people disagree XDD ). Also, Tenchi Universe and Solty Rei leaves me feeling very satisfied at the end, no matter how many times I watch them. Living for the Day After Tomorrow also had a very sweet, nice ending.

My two favorite endings in an anime series are;

Wolf's Rain - For those who haven't seen the series yet I won't ruin it, but the traumatic beauty was definitely tear worthy.

Chrno Crusade

From those two I guess you can assume that I do definitely enjoy those tear induced endings. The anime that end on note so graphically sad that it destroys everything the show built up to, but at the same time gives hope that something was still accomplished despite the devastation.

~Or maybe I just have a bad case of Schadenfreude?

Angel Beats: Made me sob, a sign that it ended it really spectacularly.

Clannad After Story: Thank God for this ending! I would have seriously lost it if it ended like it almost did!

Eureka 7: I LOVED this ending! Epic on so many levels!

There are other ones I liked but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

I have to say that I enjoyed the Strawberry Panic ending tremendously. I didn't know it was possible to cram that many famous movie endings into a single episode.

Actually, I realize a lot of my favorite anime, its not the ending that I like the most. I loved Cowboy Bebop, I loved Mushi-Mushi, I loved Giant Killing ... but I wouldn't count any of their endings in a top ten, never mind a top three.

But for me, it would be:

(1) F.L.A.G. If you got emotionally involved in the story, the ending is just ... well, it can't be described without spoiling it.

(2) El Cazador de la Bruja ~ for the Bee's Train Girls With Guns anime, the journey's the thing ~ but the third was the most satisfying ending

(3) Sora no Woto ~ I wasn't even thinking that I was watching it for the story as much as the post-apocalyptic atmosphere, but in the last half the series scattered clues actually form into a classic SF tale.

Honorable Mention:
Simoun ~ not for the climax of the story, but for the almost perfect "life goes one" nature of the epilogue.
