How much anime did you watch before you knew what anime was?

I was thinking about it, and there was a whole era of shows that were from japan that were licensed on the cheap, that nobody had any freaking idea what they were.

For me they were most of my favorite shows when I was a kid (Gatchaman, Star Blazers, the one episode of Robotech I saw that I always remembered), but I'd probably been watching that stuff for 10 years before I'd even heard of anime (or 'japanime' which is just a terrible terrible name).

I think I'm a bit older than most of CR, but did you see anime before you knew what it was, and how did you first discover that there was a difference?

Some Super Robot from the 80's, Gatchaman, Magic Knight Rayearth(tagalog dubbed), Macross, Speed Racer, DBZ, Ranma 1/2, much of anime introduced in Cartoon Network in the mid 90's, and Slayers(tagalog dubbed.) After I did my research in the late 90's, I came to realize what anime is.

.. actually always knew it. Even when Marine Boy, Speed Racer and Star Blazers came out.. it was obvious it wasn't from the USA. Especially when everything was centered around Tokyo :p

Akira, to put it simply, and Princess Mononoke, I watched lots of it growing up and enjoyed it, Samurai Pizza Cats, Dragon Ball, Z, Megaman, Digimon, Pokemon, Gundam Wing, Medabots, Esclaflowne and never really divulged deep into it until I watched these two movies, or was determined to learn more about it. Now I've seen thousands of anime titles, and I can't be satisfied. What is meant to be, is meant to be, obviously my favorite shows as a kid are relevant to my particular overall tastes. lol

I will say it was a massive revelation when I realized the Argo was actually supposed to be the Yamato.

Franco-Japanese shows kind of blurred the line too I guess; (Jayce & the Wheeled warriors, Ulysses 31)

I think as a kid I was just barely aware of the idea that cartoons had to come from somewhere, at all.

I think it was some Pokemon movie I saw in theaters. I don't recall knowing that it was anime back then. I hadn't really watched anime anime shows until after I knew what anime was.

Hmmm.. I guess there was always those kid shows in TV that were japanese, like Pokemon. First series that I watched as anime and knew what that was, was Neon Genesis Evangelion. Before that I had seen my fair share of kids programs as I mentioned. I was about 15 at the time watched NGE. That really started my anime mania! and that was 10 years ago..

Hah interesting question. There was a time from 1998 to roughly 2001 when I watched some anime shows on the WB channel every Saturday. I think they were Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh, and Card Captors. Although at the time I probably stumbled across an episode of Inuyasha or Sailor Moon, however, I didn't really know what anime was or that it came from Japan. It wasn't until late 2010 that I officially became a self proclaimed anime fan.
