You did NOT just expose shinji like that.

Didn't expose anyone really. It's a fairly well known, and old, technique in the business world. No new revelations in what I wrote. It's as old as Avon.

Which is why it works so well. Though you strike me as a fairly intelligent individual.

It's not evil. I'm not accusing CrunchyRoll of doing anything nefarious. It's an old, highly successful business technique that preys on the highly addictive human need for praise. You get it for "free", you give it to your friends (praise), it costs CR next to nothing. Hell, they don't even have to print coupons.

Win, win.

It wasn't my intention to make you look like you're accusing them though.
Maybe "exposing" is a bit much.
But thanks for explaining all this marketing stuff. I learned something new today.

Correct, this site is for socializing. However, the bottom line of it is your claim about the users who have given their attention to your premium. I had only suggested things that could avoid your annoyance. It's by choice that you take in what I suggest, not a force. And it's not that you technically ignore just because you are on vacation from inbox. Options are elastic, in the very least.

My denotation on "really" wasn't to make it sound like you were an idiot for being annoyed. I was just saying that you should consider doing something about it if you don't want any of the repertoire of users. That is where I came in with my gist. I mean, unless you want me to fathom you a different syntax.

Thanks for pointing out the feature of going on vacation then, I'm not annoyed at all, but I was just seeing what people thought about it, and I value your input, if everyone seen it my way it would be a pretty boring discussion. I've only been a member a month? not even, about 4 days or something left, and I've had 3 people ask me, not a lot, but I see a growing trend.

However I wish to be apart of the community, and "Going on Vacation" as you put it hinders that, and I'd rather have tools to ignore things rather then just block everyone individually, or do away with it all to remedy this, if I happen to get annoyed in the future.

For sure, this is a marketing technique used time and time again, much like those "Free DVD Rentals", Rent so many DVD's, Get a Free DVD rental for a friend, etc, the types of uses go on and on. The difference is, you receive this free voucher in the mail, or say you get it in your email/account like Crunchyroll does, the way of getting it doesn't matter, but other members paid or free have no way of contacting you or getting your information to ask you for it, which this should tell you immediately, Crunchyroll's structure wasn't very well thoughtout, and they are condoning their paying customers to harrassment, others would see it as praise I guess.

I don't get spammed for guest passes. Mainly because I will post them on my profile when I get them and just comment on a video about it. But I see a lot more of actual episodes getting spammed with guest pass begging. Especially with the more popular shows like Naruto and Bleach.

It would be nice to opt-out of the guest passes.

I haven't had anyone request guest passes, but maybe I've just got my whole profile blocked or something.

I'd be annoyed if I were getting lots of "begging" from strangers for them. For me, the way I "sell" crunchyroll to friends is just to mention it and my experience with it. If I knew someone who was using crunchyroll free (perhaps as a result of me mentioning it in conversation) and they wanted to see firsthand what the "premium" experience is, I'd be happy to "market" it by giving them a guest pass. But really, my just telling them about it, and about why I have a premium membership would probably do just as well in converting friends as giving them a guest pass.

If I were getting just an occasional request from a stranger, I'd probably shrug it off and give it to them.

Yeah, I see what you see aswell, but when I comment on the video with my opinion, rather then Guest Passes, I get messages in my inbox, which isn't very nice, especially when you didn't say anything about a guest pass, and to just randomly get asked for no reason at all from some stranger.

I guess I don't get spammed cause I don't comment a lot. But even if I was, my block list would grow greatly.

What I particularly can't wrap my head around is the fact how Bleach and Naruto for example are freely available on numerous websites, perhaps a few hours later, but not too much later, yet CR still has people that do this? Human intelligence makes me scratch my head sometimes.

Indeed, which is why an "Opt Out" feature would solve your issue to a point. Best I can tell you is to post any suggestions in the Feedback forum. To be honest though, I don't see CR giving us that kind of option and if they do, they'll probably bury it in section H, page 32.

Mind you, even if you can opt out of guess passes, you'll still receive random messages on CR without provocation. Such behavior is as old as the wind.

Yeah, I know, I was in agreement with this kind of feature, as long as they would tell the user who's not a friend in bold letters that "This user is not receiving guest passes", which would probably put a pretty blunt stop to it, and they should make some sort of news article about it so those people will check and save time. I dunno if that makes more sense or not, but you're right just having that doesn't mean people will care or stop.

Without guest passes I would never have gotten my subscription Also, you don't have to use them but giving them out in new episodes or to friends is just great ... as for "CR is making us do it's marketing for us" -_- ... they are a way to give your friends a chance to watch legal episodes in 1080p. I think it is great. If you are doing it looking for praise though you are doing it for the wrong reason. When I got guess passes I always thanked those that gave them to me but now as a new "Anime member" I plan to give them out to the less fortunate who ACTUALLY plan to watch anime and not just have it "Cause the star looks good"

EDIT - Just saw what you said to chrome so NM. Yeah it is a good tool and I don't think it is nefarious in any way.

Cause it is legal here? I mean yeah I watch anime on "those sites" but to get a decent stream quality with relatively good resolution w/o shitty subs? I mostly did it for series that CR didn't have because I enjoy the idea of what they are doing here. I loved it when people put guest passes in the newest naruto episodes. It is a way of saying "Here you go random stranger I will help you out." as for random pm messages for guest passes. Some people suck. Use the block feature and give them to your needy friends. Some peoples money is tighter than others. Just sayin.

Out of all the posts here I mostly agree with yours but I will say. Having someone TALK about the experience and ACTUALLY experiencing it for yourself? BIG DIFFERENCE. LOL well at least for me. Without Guest Passes I would never have bought an anime membership. and yeah .. trying to sell people on crunchyroll has always been tough for me. I mostly go with the "You would be supporting the anime community without actually having to spend any cash." Anyways, I hope that was some food for thought. I do agree that actually getting people on crunchyroll and watching anime - talking is probably the way to go.

It's in the same general continent of businesses that manage to make it 'stylish' to wear something that advertises their own business. Then the business not only gets free advertising, people PAY the business for the privilege of serving as walking billboards.

The logo-wearers get to feel fashionable, part of an 'in-crowd,' maybe even envied a tiny bit (if the business in question offers more pricey items), the business gets a better advertising campaign than some Super Bowl commercials.

Related anecdote:

I'm reminded of a time, long ago when I was a wee lad...I went into this games/comic store with my mom. Amongst the various goods were these t-shirts, which not only had this store's logo, but their phone number and street address.

My mom, in her classic full innocence, with not a sliver of sarcasm intended, asked if they paid kids to wear said shirts.

The clerks at the store had no idea how to respond.
