Traumatizing Anime

Here's a thread discussing if you have ever, or known someone, to have been traumatized in some way from watching a specific anime. Trauma can be both figuratively and literally. An Anime either so bad or so shocking that it altered your perceptions to this day. Can be good or bad, I guess.

In my case, an Anime did cause a trauma. And that Anime is called, "Naruto". YES, you heard right.

The first time I watched Naruto was when it first aired on YTV's Bionix which was a late night 2 hours anime segment (I guess Naruto clearly constituted being "late night". You know, all the non-existent "adult" themes clearly requires it to be late night when we all just want to get the hell to sleep). Anyway, this being on Bionix it was obviously going to be in English Dub.

Now I have to get something straight right on the onset. I have no problems with English Dubbing - none whatsoever. So I couldn't care less if the show was in French or Spanish or Tagalog. As long as it is in a language I could understand. But Naruto was just nightmarish. The voice for the character Naruto was worse than ear-rape. It sucked out my mind and replaced it with "stupid". But I gave it the benefit of a doubt and kept watching. And THAT was a big mistake. By the end of the first ninja examination, I was thoroughly grinding my teeth every time I heard Naruto's voice. His Hell-spawn of a voice became permanently seared into my brain (like someone branding you with a red hot metal rod).

Now I know what you are going to say. "Why not just watch it in Japanese with English SUB?" Well, it's too late. Believe me, I tried doing that but every time I even think about Naruto all I hear is the sound of my personal Hell (i.e. "Believe it!") The fact that I TRIED to endure the English voice of Naruto cause me to forever cringe at the thought of sitting down and giving the show another shot. Even today, I've contemplated on watching the show but no matter how hard I tried, I could never find the willpower to click on the link to watch the show. It became so bad that I also stopped buying Shonen Jump just to make sure I don't end up reading the Naruto section. My friends even tell me to start watching at Shippuden since Naruto is all grown up and the plot may just cure me of my Naruto-trauma but I still couldn't click on the link. Naruto would just have to open his mouth and I'll probably close the screen. I remember being at a friend's house and they played a Naruto video game for Gamecube. I ended up walking off after my first game which I deliberately MUTED when the person I was playing against chose Naruto as his character.

Well that sure was long-winded. If you managed to sit through that, I applaud you for your patience.

'Trauma' might be overstating it in my case, but...the 3-episode long Power Ups in Dragonball Z...or the 6 minutes of recap in the manga-based episodes of Bleach.

There would be moments where I would actually swear at the television.

Whenever people talk to me about how Japanese kids don't have attention deficit problems like American kids, I want to point out various anime recaps -- or over-extended flashbacks of things that happened in that very same freakin' episode.

Technically, those would be attention deficit on Japanese ADULTS. They're the ones who made those episodes LOL

Anyways, I once watched a hentai, Pigeon Blood, in a livestream for shits and giggles but oh god, it was traumatic. There were so many scenes that scarred my eyes but I kept watching. It was so hard to watch and I couldn't help but shiver. If I went into a vivid description, my post would be reported but there were so many disgusting scenes - a well animated one where there were needles placed all over this girl's body including her 'area'. Not only that but also a scene where she was forced to drink her own secretion. Then another girl had a v0g0n0 for a mouth and had two p0n0s. It was terrible.

Yeah, it's funny how some hentai is horribly scarring. For me it was "Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend".

Okay, so we've established that the Japanese create some of the most disgusting porn imaginable. That said, I really don't think that's what the original poster was asking about. I think he meant something more along the lines of mainstream anime.

Anyway, for me I have to say the most disturbing thing I've ever seen was Higurashi: When They Cry. I don't know if it happens the same way in the anime, I admit I only saw a few episodes, but in the manga the first story arc ends with the main character ripping his own throat out. That was my first encounter with a story like that, and it seriously disturbed me for a while. The sharp contrast between how that story starts and how it ends is really shocking, I never saw it coming.

Haven't seen Higurashi but I read some articles about it and yeah lots of people were disturbed. I've seen School Days though. I can't really say I was shocked in that. The dude had it coming >:D

I'm going by how trauma was defined in the OP to mean desensitized in this case. For that, it would be Elfen Leid. After watching that, and being shocked at the brutal murders and amounts of gore shown, nothing bothers me anymore. Umineko was pretty bloody, too, and I thought it was awesome. It's to the point where if an anime is gonna have blood in it, it better go for it! My avatar is also a good example of that.

I would go with the horror show, Another. The way people died as made me scared to use certain stuff. Like pointy umbrellas, elevators, and going to the beach :'c

For me it was school days. My god, maybe it's just me, but the way it ended was to be honest, too psychologically fucked up. Even when i had mixed feelings for the main character, the way they all just died, one by one, the drama between them, the way that innocent girl just snapped killing that other girl, then keeping his head as if he was still alive, hugging it. Im sorry, but to be honest, it made me think how scary, i mean REEEALLY scary a woman can be sometimes if you're in her way of love or anything, of what SOME ( I never said all ) are capable of doing. I know it's an anime only, but to be honest it felt too real for me, ( I haz a fragile heart, i think lol ) and i cant look at a girl i might like/love too long without sometimes being reminded of what could happen to me, as if i was that guy and she was her, which im not (>__<) I can only hope that i can forget it eventually, so it won't pop up when i go out with someone.

one of the first anime I ever watched was "Barefoot Gin" it's basically a first hand account of the bombing of Hiroshima and the horrible aftermath. seeing people dying from radiation is awful. it's an old anime but it's gruesome and the fact that it's a true story is just, pardon my french, fucked up.
