I've been a premium member here on Crunchyroll for a few months now and for the most part I love it. I have my settings set to allow mature content but everything is still censored. I've held back from ranting about it because I didn't want to come across like a pervert but I was recently watching A Dark Rabbit has Seven Lives (loved it btw) and there was a part in the first episode *minor spoiler* where Taito puts his head back on. I was amazed to see that even THAT was completely censored!
It would be one thing if this was only happening to those w/o the premium membership but come on, I'm paying for this! Imagine if you paid for a DVD and upon watching it you found out it was censored like crazy. Unless there's a good reason for it, or I'm doing something wrong, I'm going back to the free membership. |

For that specific example, it was simulcasted (aired a few hours after it broadcast in Japan). For the most part, simulcasts are censored because it's a TV airing. The uncensored material are shown on DVDs/BDs which CR don't usually get.

I, too, particularly dislike the censoring of the violence. Sometimes you can barely see the scene in some anime. I know American TV can get away with some pretty grotesque stuff on a TV-14 rating, but I have to remember this is Japan we are talking about here.

There is a good reason: Most of the titles CR has were originally acquired as simulcasts, so CR gets the broadcast version. The licensor isn't going to provide CR with the uncensored version well before it is available on DVD/BD in Japan, and they aren't going to go to the trouble of going back and providing the DVD/BD version afterward, either (at least not without requiring more money from Crunchyroll). For library titles, you'll rarely see censoring, as those will typically be the DVD version (Queen's Blade is an excellent example, Kanokon is another). If you want to go back to putting up with ads and lower resolution, that is your decision to make. |

So, on the subject is it actually a thing where they intentionally make things super censorbar heavy in order to sell more DVD copies, or is that just a silly conspiracy theory?

Ikkitousen and I think Blassreiter is uncensored. There are some Japanese movies that are uncensored too.

It's just a silly conspiracy theory. Previous post have stated that CR simulcast is the same as Japanese TV broadcast. No sane Japanese TV station is going to broadcast anything graphically explicit or questionable images without censor. Since broadcast can be seen by any people, TV stations can get tons of angry phone calls and email complaints from mainstream TV audience who are not anime fan. I think certain anime titles without censorship, such as Ikkitousen, are likely the video version of the show, not the broadcast version. |

I personally subscribe to the theory that they sometimes over-censor. Whether they are just being extra cautious or want to sell more discs is another matter. One should keep in mind that the airing of late night anime itself is not a money maker. In fact, from what I understand, obtaining enough sponsorship that it doesn't incur a loss is considered doing well. When you take that into account, it makes sense to be rather conservative about showing the fanservice bits. If you see an uncensored fansub of a series during the time it is being broadcast, it is likely from a premium station like AT-X, which actually pays for the anime, and often airs it during daytime hours. |

see now I'm unhealthily thinking about censorship.
What're their laws like now? The US has pretty strict laws about obscenity on the public airways but I know at least in the old days the only things actually illegal to show in Japan were the (charmingly named) 'pink bits'. |

So from the looks of it, CR can't actually do anything about the censoring. Kinda sucks, I mean I prefer to watch what the artist originally intended me to see.

Thanks everybody. I can honestly say it makes sense to me now. I was actually going to see if Ikki was censored too but I didn't get around to it because I already have those on DVD. I really want to watch Dark Rabbit uncensored sometime, only for the violence of course, probably won't even watch the last episode
. Think I'll extend to a year membership too! |

Its more like the other way around ~ the visuals that require censoring are added to help sell disks. Ten years ago when advertising generated a bit more revenue and when more DVD sales were to rental stores where more PG material is easier to promote, there was a wider boundary between regular anime and the hentai. At somewhere from 5 to 20 cents per view, Crunchyroll is not going to get the uncensored cut for a simulcast. As people have already noted, the uncensored cuts are when the DVD distributor uses Crunchyroll to stream a catalog title (or package of catalog titles), mostly to raise the profile of the DVDs they are selling, sometimes to squeeze the last little bit of revenue from the series before the license expires. |
