The episode 13 teaser at the end of 12 had Urabe say something like "I hope to be your first and last girlfriend", which is a pretty potent and personal statement and I don't think was said in the manga. That got me excited that episode 13 may stray from the plot of the manga, but it disappointingly didn't. None the less, I still enjoyed the latest and last episode. I think the producers somehow improved on the original and made the story pacing and relationship progression more fluid, natural, and lively. Of course, it helps that the anime essentially sped up a one-episode per month series to a two-episodes per week series.

From one way of looking at things, this episode showed the most relationship progression of any of the episodes. Sure, there was more progression in their physical relationship in a few of the other episodes (like episode 12 in particular, where Urabe desired a hug at the end; and episodes 8 and 9 where Tsubaki lost control and did some ear-licking, then Urabe discovered that she liked it, I mean really, really liked it!!! As in liked the way it made her weak in the knees and feel all warm and gushy inside.

I was supposed this will do for now but I was still hoping for something else.

This was actually my guess as to how the season would end quite a few weeks ago, when I figured out how the director was adapting the manga. The two chapters are standalone chapters in the manga, with "meeting mom's grave" happening several chapters before Urabe runs into Big Sis while shopping. This adaptation was nothing short of brilliant, taking the two stories and weaving them together into a coherent episode of anime!

I haven't read the manga yet so I don't know what's to come. I didn't read the spoiler btw as I'll be reading the manga from where this anime leaves off. Btw, do you know approximately what chapters it leaves off from the anime, or rather episode 13/finale?

It rivals Toradora's kiss scene for good departures from the original source material! Enjoy some GIFs of this romantic and utterly sweet "kiss-substitute" in the spoiler block:

Ok, I'm not sure I can 100% agree with this. Toradora's kiss in the series between Ryuji and Taiga was one of the best I've seen and have it been posted many times in other forums, anime communities, occasionally on CR, AMP thread, etc. I would say that it may "rival" it in terms of uniqueness and freshness in terms of execution but not in terms of technically.

Also, any further "relationship progression" would have diverged far too much from the manga, making further seasons very difficult.

What I originally hoped for was either this:

1) A very dramatic finale episode similar to the latest Dusk Maiden of Amnesia (not including Yuuko-san last minute trolling *varies between what viewers thinks of the ending*) that has the potential to bring a viewers to tears.
2) A cliffhanger or something that leaves it off as ambiguous so that a season 2 can be picked up in the future. The final scene in this series of episode 13 seems like one of those "happy endings" so..I'm not sure we'll ever see another season again.

Of course, there is the OVA, but I would imagine it would be either a prequel (similar to Another, Sankarea, etc) or one of those episodes that's taken randomly off from the manga similar to Maken-Ki!, Infinite Stratos, etc.

Anyways, just my thoughts on this.

I will copy over my log of how the episodes and chapters mesh together that I have been keeping at the MAL MGX Anime Fan Club, which I started.

Episode 1 - Most of Chapter 0 - the one-shot manga that started it all.
Episode 2 - One crucial scene from Chapter 0, and Chapter 1 (with some nice additions)
Episode 3 - Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.
Episode 4 - Chapters 7 and 8 (with a small flavor of Chapter 5, but about summer gym uniforms instead of swimsuits.)
Episode 5 - All over the place! Some more flavor of Chapter 5, Chapter 6, Chapter 14, and Chapter 16!
Episode 6 - Chapter 15 and Chapter 2!
Episode 7 - Chapter 10 neatly folded inside of chapter 17.
Episode 8 - Very faithfully covers Chapters 20, 21, and 22: M. Sensation; M. Feeling; and M. Response.
Episode 9 - Chapters 23 and 24
Episode 10 - Chapter 28, 29, 30, and part of 31 (with judicious use of leaving out redundant or non-essential-to-the-story content)
Episode 11 - The rest of Chapter 31 through Chapter 34 - end of Cultural Festival Arc!
Episode 12 - Chapters 35 and 36, with the payoff moment from Chapter 9! Brilliant!
Episode 13 - Chapters 19 and 12, expertly combined into a single story!

So, to start up with the manga from the "point" that the anime covered, you would want to start at Chapter 37

Now, for the chapters that were not covered and those that were covered incompletely and I would suggest reading in full:
Chapter 5 & 6 -Mysterious Outdoor Pool and Mysterious Summer Vacation - The pool part is handled quite differently, and unlike in the anime, chapter 6 is the first time Tsubaki visits Urabe's house, and the stuff that was skipped from the chapter is priceless! Read it!
Chapter 9 - mysterious sign - the "payoff" moment from this chapter was used in episode 12, but the stuff leading up to it is about how they manage their secret relationship in school.
Chapter 11 - mysterious arousal - Totally not covered in the anime, though it could be picked up and tossed in in future season or as the OVA. It is entirely stand-alone and quite good.
Chapter 13 - mysterious dessert - A fairly short chapter and the concept of "dessert" between Oka and Urabe was brought up. Not essential, but has some good Oka moments.
Chapter 18 - mysterious exam study - Mostly and Oka and Ueno chapter. A must for Oka fans.
Chapter 25 - Mysterious Moment - Likely to be the OAD, as it takes place in early spring (and must take place in early spring). Very nice chapter!
Chapter 26 - Mysterious Souvenir - Could also be part of the OAD, as it is very associated with the events of "Moment". Lots of OKA, lots of fan-service, lots of set-up for the next arc after the anime. Would be a good bridge to season 2, so it will either be the OAD or early in season 2.
Chapter 27 - Mysterious Summer Greeting - More family stuff, summer trips, Bon festivals, yukata, good stuff!

And no, I'm not obsessed or anything. Why do you ask? No, really! Does it seem like I'm obsessed? I just don't see it! Honestly!!

I'm not saying that it is as good of a scene as the Toradora kiss scene. That is, most likely, my favorite scene of all time in anime! I have a habit of watching the last episode up to that point, over and over and over again!

Just because I love it so much, I'll put this in a spoiler block:

In the novel, the first kiss was handled quite differently. It was also very good, but it didn't compare to this scene! The scene that takes place in the same spot in the story is also very, very good in the novel (and rather hot, too) but still, I feel that this was an anime improvement over the source material. That is what I meant about this episode of MGX. The way that scene is handled in the manga is not nearly as awesome as it was in the anime! (Both good, anime much better.)

In my opinion, this is a "there is more to come" moment. It is inherent in Urabe's comment about more inappropriate things. (But it does give an out to be done and have no more after the OAD. I don't think that will happen, myself.)

Thanks for the synopsis for those of us reading along. The different orders makes it a bit odd so I'm just reading the manga in order.

Has anyone read anywhere why 13 is the last episode?

Any hopes for a second season?

13 was the last episode because it was only planned from the beginning as a 13 episode series.

Aside from the fact that series runs of longer than 1 - 2 seasons are rare for anime in modern times, they are unheard of for late night anime. (Nazo no Kanojo X [Mysterious Girlfriend X] aired at 1:30 AM in Japan).

The airing of anime late at night isn't intended to generate revenue itself. The money is made from one or more of the following: DVD/BD sales, merchandise, increased sales of the original media.

Merchandise sales are like not a factor here, so that leaves DVD/BD sales and increased sales of the original media (the manga in this case).

DVD/BD sales normally don't even start until the anime is near the end or even finished. Unlike in most western markets, these discs are also released one at a time over a period of months, so it takes some time for the full effect of the sales to be seen.

The effect on manga sales would typically be apparent before the series was ended, but rarely in time that even a dramatic rise would cause a second season to be authorized. There is also the chance that even if sales of the original media see a substantial boost, the publisher may feel that a second season would have little additive effect.

Being a long time fan of the manga I've really enjoyed the anime adaption
Hopefully I'll be able to pick up the series on DVD someday soon
I read that the series is being packaged with the 9th tankoubon so I might try and get my hands on it

A continuation of the series is unlikely, but we can hope

The anime worked on me in that case! I bought all the manga and will buy the next books as they come out. Wish it was more cost effective to get Afternoon magazine but it isn't so I wait for the tankobons... I similarly don't buy Evening for the one title I like but Ultrajump generally has enough to make it worth buying.

Sentai did license it for release, so we will see at least a subbed DVD release from them, likely as soon as the Japanese production committee allows it.

I don't see the series being packaged with a tankoubon. Perhaps you meant an OAD?

Any release is a good release
See the bottom of this scan of the latest chapter of the manga http://www.mangareader.net/mysterious-girlfriend-x/68/25
DVD surely means of the series right?

Note it says "DVD" (singular). OAD's (bundled OVA) have become increasingly common in recent years.

Here is more information on it:

Mysterious Girlfriend X OVA

Summer's here. Festival episode with more strangeness, yukata, fox masks, fireworks, and all that other good stuff especially with Urabe x Mikoto.

Amusing episode although not special imo. It was a fun watch though.
