Although I haven't read the manga on this series to be I found myself enamored with both the drawing style and the dance dream sequence the male protagonist envisioned with Ukabe. It's not that unusual for someone to be smitten or fall in love by some preconceived notion rationalized in the brain; thus as a viewer I became a willing pawn to be drawn in by this manic couple dynamic. When Ukabe made her parting comments after Akira specifically tore the pic of a previous crush and confessed his love toward her by ep 1 end I was positive this show will have the potential to deliver some unpredictable surprises. As for the mention of sex in the conversation I felt she meant down the road sometime in the development of the relationship when it deepens, not tomorrow or anytime very soon.
As for the drool all I can add is if you ever do community work or nurse service with the mentally handicapped be prepared to see and wipe off from their faces a lot of saliva. Certain medications exacerbate this reaction. Over time enough exposure to excessive drool or spit will de-sensitive your revulsion. It will eventually seem and feel like lukewarm water.
Compared to Upotte!! a show like Chobits is moderate fare. Except for the stupid underwear parody in a dress shop I liked this series quite a bit. I just found it to be another study of AI interface with humanity.
yes i have to admit i found my self pleasantly surprised by the show too. from the cover art type thing i saw in advertisements i thought the art was gonna suck but it was actualy very nice quality like taking the older anime styles and smoothing the roughness out of some of them.(course i know nothing about art so im just using whatever words sound right to me). at first i thought it woulkd be an ecchi poor quality animation show, but it snuck up from behind me and smashed me over the head with a shovel.
and ya i know i didnt think that either, it just seemed like that was mentioned waaay to soon (in my mind at least, if you will read or have read my post just above yours you will notice my explanation). but thats mostly my problem that it makes me uncomfortable.
i liked chobits too i only really noticed 3 ecchi moments myself (but thats just me being happily oblivious i suspect), is one of my favorites tho.
on a side note im putting this in caps because i believe what im about to type is important and truie.

is the basis of it i consider myself a weirdo but also completely normal for it, because in the end every human being is a weirdo and being a weirdo is ipso facto normal. anything you do could be considered weird by someone just because they aren't used to it..

I enjoyed it, especially the artwork. It is great to see different styles creeping back into anime after moe has dominated it for so many years.
I also like the premise of the show. This is a way for the author to examine a developing relationship in a rather innocent way. It's a welcome change to some of the more in-your-face ecchi shows out there. And yes, this show is ecchi, but it is more implied than blatant. All in all, I find it cute.
As for tasting drool being gross, well... that's an extremely low bar to set for a relationship. I guess the nicest thing to say is if this grosses you out, then this isn't the show for you.

Heck, with the exception of him not finding out about the panty scissors yet, and tearing the picture up with his hands instead because of that, it was practically frame for frame from the one-shot of the manga. (Chapter 0 on most sites.) I was thinking the bit at the beginning was new about a boy wondering who his first sex partner would be, then I went to the manga again and there was that statement and the picture of all the naked girls that was used at the beginning... stark700 wrote:

Hey, at least you watched it before getting upset! As for the character design, it is old school, and delightfully so! I find it nice to have an anime completely devoid of moe trappings! Not that I don't like moe, it is just refreshing to see something that doesn't look like it came out of a cookie-cutter. Not to mention all of the detail in the background with all of the SF, anime, and manga references all over the place!

on the show... well I loved it personally it's visually nice to look at in a retro way, very clean and the funnier part is i was in high school when he in 2001. So I can really connect to this character on more even level because Akira Tsubaki would be 26/27 by now lol
I don't mind visual because it's not about how it looks but the story. But personally I like clean looking and new visuals, pretty, cute.(call me shallow anime watcher). It's just the drool liking part, grossed me out too much. I wish they would change it to kissing instead of licking the drool of her finger. Hope that happens in the future and when it does let me know because I will watch it. But as of now, I'm going to put it on hold because I don't like that concept, again kinda grossed out with my saliva. I need ice cream :happy:
the guy that writes the anime is old school and doesn't believe in pre-martial relation ships. So this is way around he though of for teens to explore before marriage with out kissing or doing things that married couples should be doing. I had to dig around to find this tidbit of information but yeah..the drool part at the end did make me a little gag worthy but eh it's nothing I can't handle to much...

I read your comment over at ANN on this and I thought somebody else said that it was really an internet rumor, and based on the guy's other manga work he is really just into pushing boundaries... Not to mention that Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide it is heavily suggested that they two will have sex before the end of the manga... I guess that could happen after marriage, but I don't see that as a requirement at this point...

heh if im ever in court for because ive done something and being someone elses perception of weird will have an effect on the outcome then i am already totally screwed because it must be something pretty far out of sync with society and i would have likely known what doing so would get me in trouble (the way the u.s. is going i think it may come to that in 10-30 years or so).
personally i look at a crime (when the law goes against my beliefs aka against the bible which imho a lot of laws here do/ whats right) as if its a financial transaction, only its not money im paying with its time/minor psychological torture(jail) or whatever the possible punishments for said "Crime" are. (to clarify i dont go around breaking laws the law/government serves a good purpos its just horribly flawed i mean heck if you followed someone around 24/7 you could find multiple felonys for the stupidest crap ).
not to say im not human i still care about others opinions at first at the very least then i stop being hurt over it and try to get over it.

I loved the animation for this show! Viva la Old School! Not to mention the VA for Urabe was spectacular...if I had to listen to another highpitched squeky little sister type voice I probably woulda screamed...maybe.

Urabe has several nude scenes in the manga, but makes Tsubaki close his eyes or his is blindfolded when those happen. There is no sex up to the most current chapter of the manga, though Tsubaki does have a dream about them having sex, probably in the next two episodes if it is true to the manga, and she does occasionally do things like going without panties or wearing something particularly provacative, but poor Tsubaki almost never sees it! Instead he experiences her level of arousal through their "bond". So it is kind of eechi in the sense that the reader of the manga sees her naked, with a "barbie doll" level of detail in the nudity, but they do not have sex. I find the idea of their being able to read each other’s emotional state through their "bond" to be very interesting. In a way, Urabe is almost a prude when it comes to physical contact, and they both agree that they want to wait to share their first kiss until they both feel emotionally ready for it, as opposed to kissing just to get it over with or something like that. They want it to be special. The few "indirect" kisses or dream kisses in the manga are very, very sweet! Almost to the point that the manga should come with a warning to diabetics!

In short, I agree with you on the eechi vs non-eechi comment. My general description of the show is: A quirky, slightly kinky, but ultimately sweet romantic comedy with a refreshingly unique approach to the genre and one of the most charismatic, intriguing, and well crafted female romantic leads I have ever come across. Urabe Mikoto is an amazing character, with many layers to her personality and so much mystery surrounding her that she draws me into the story completely!
However, based on my knowledge of the manga, I am restricting viewing of it for my 15 year old son until I see how the next couple of episodes are handled. One scene in particular!

Click to show or hide ahh well i didnt know that, never read the manga, on my personal scale i would consider your description ecchi but all the much worse because the emotional content of the story is so high that its worse to me than the fan service filled crudy shows because my mind wont provide me with a protective filter against stuff like that. def not a show i could ever watch with other people if what you described from the manga is in it

Also, do understand that there is nothing explicit in the manga, ever! When Tsubaki dreams about having sex, you see the two of them, she is naked, but not really shown, and he states that is what happened in the dream... No visuals or even implied contact. I just wanted to make sure that you didn't misunderstand what I wrote to indicate there was a "dream sex scene" or something like that.

My general description of the show is: A quirky, slightly kinky, but ultimately sweet romantic comedy with a refreshingly unique approach to the genre and one of the most charismatic, intriguing, and well crafted female romantic leads I have ever come across. Urabe Mikoto is an amazing character, with many layers to her personality and so much mystery surrounding her that she draws me into the story completely!
However, based on my knowledge of the manga, I am restricting viewing of it for my 15 year old son until I see how the next couple of episodes are handled. One scene in particular!

Click to show or hide ahh well i didnt know that, never read the manga, on my personal scale i would consider your description ecchi but all the much worse because the emotional content of the story is so high that its worse to me than the fan service filled crudy shows because my mind wont provide me with a protective filter against stuff like that. def not a show i could ever watch with other people if what you described from the manga is in it

Also, do understand that there is nothing explicit in the manga, ever! When Tsubaki dreams about having sex, you see the two of them, she is naked, but not really shown, and he states that is what happened in the dream... No visuals or even implied contact. I just wanted to make sure that you didn't misunderstand what I wrote to indicate there was a "dream sex scene" or something like that.

I can see this getting really good. Only at ep 2, they are moving pretty quick. Ep 1 was kinda "wtf did I just see" shock. But now that you know whats up, you want more, Ep 2 is everything and then some. I find myself enjoying this very much, it really sucks me in. Between Ep2 of MXG" and "Upotte!" I had a dam good anime weekend, and theres still Dusk maiden and Nyarko-San....
...and now back to drool withdrawl

I LOLed hard on this episode. Between MC's bizarre dreams and Urabe's mysterious drool powers, I'm loving this. xD
Key features of this episode:
When Urabe... "stimulates" herself, she can cause arousal in other people with her drool.
She can read other peoples memories by sampling their drool... which makes me wonder what would happen if they had sex. lol
I just love how she nose-bled after she tasted his drool...
And MC assumed the worst when she said she would snap if he had opened his eyes. I of course thought otherwise since her stimulation was rather quiet. hehe
We should call her type of personality Daekidere (drool sweet) or maybe tsundaeki (drool cold) lol Assuming my word-choice is correct. :P
Oh yeah, I am absolutely LOVING this revival of old-school art styles!! Between Ozma and this, I hope its not just a brief bit of nostalgia in Japan and an actual trend. I hope we see more anime with 80s style animation! |

I've been reading the manga for a while, and I can say it just gets better from here. I like what they are doing with the anime. :)
