People hate anime because of the fan base, basically. All forms of media have "weird shit" associated with it like classical Russian literature has Lolita, and so forth. The thing is, the stereotypical anime fan tends to be extremely obnoxious and memorable in a negative light. It's perfectly natural for people to associate stereotypes with certain groups of people; it just kind of sucks when there are way more negative examples than positive. Most of the "normal" anime fans I know are extremely secretive about their hobbies because they don't want to be associated with that overweight guy who never showers and always wears a naruto headband to class, and let's be honest, who could blame them?

People hate Anime because they don't know anything about it. If anyone is familiar with /sp/, then you'd know they hate everyone and anything related to Anime, because they don't know a thing about Anime. Most importantly /sp/ is full of people who need to get out the house more. I like both Anime and Sports so i'm not part of the group who hates Anime on /sp/.

Just because it's animated, they think it is childish. So, by watching it, you are being childish and immature. It's not a "real" show. It's a cartoon for kids. So to be cool, they hate it even though they know absolutely nothing about it.

So yea. That's the main reason why the people in my school area.

There seems to be a negative stigma around most anime's which aren't aimed for the same age group as Pokemon.

I think most of this comes from the stereotype of Hentai and Japanese culture being perverted - which in some cases is true, as stereotypes have to come from somewhere. An example I've had of this was my house mates at University, when I told them that I watched anime, they said "Oh, so you watch Japanese manga porn"... *Facepalm*. There's also the negative connotations linked to crazy Otaku's and lolicons who aren't representative of most of the anime community but still don't give us a very great rep.

I don't think its something the industry/culture can shake unfortunately, not until big name anime's such as Bleach or One Piece were to get prime time slots, such as Saturday mornings or 5/6pm slots.

It's been my experience that many people don't really hate anime [or at least no one's ever expressed their hatred of anime to me]. It's mostly some of the hardcore fans that make them uncomfortable [like the ones that like to glomp, shout phrases in japanese, etc.]. I've discussed anime with a wide variety of people, and I've never run into any kind of hatred.

Most of the time its because they don't give it a chance. I used to hate it until one of my buddies finally talked me into watching Beserk, and I've been hooked ever since.

Mature themes in "cartoon" format. I agree with AZFox, most people think of animation as something for kids. But it's ok to let your kids watch superhero movies.

Yeah, this is probably the main issue!

I think it might be because anime often requires a lot of patience which is largely absent in this current age of technology. The reason Pokemon and DBZ were so successful was because the story idea was instantly appealing for many. Nowadays, animes have very deep stories which require people to watch a bunch episodes before finally becoming interested. At least that how it is for me.
