I'm a 27 year old woman, and I love Yaoi. I think as many have said, it's aimed at whoever wants to read it. I do know that many of the Yaoi Mangaka's are women, so I think it's natural that there are certain themes or trends within the genre that appeal to other women who are drawn to it. I don't think it's strange to like Yaoi at all - personally, I find it sexy as hell There's just something about all the ferocious kissing and rough push/pull of Yaoi that you don't really see in straight mangas. Plus, the men are always seriously sexy

My boyfriend doesn't get it, but I have plenty of female and male friends who do - it's just a personal thing I suppose, as with any like/dislike.

Got a question for the yaoi fangirls:
If you saw to guys kissing irl, what would you do? :P

I'm bisexual, so I've seen plenty of kissing etc in the bars and clubs I've been to, and obviously amongst my friends as well, so it really doesn't bother me. Yaoi can often be an 'idealised' version of gay sex/relationships so seeing it in real life generally doesn't have the same effect - but then, it's not meant to. Just like straight romance manga's - it's the fantasy, the perfection - that draws you in. As for Anime's - I'd definitely second Junjou Romantica - I have a deep, undying love for Akihiko and Misaki - and World's greatest first love (they're by the same mangaka). I'd also suggest Iroku Irokoi Romantan (quite funny as well) and Winter Cicada if you don't mind getting emotionally affected by storylines (i.e heaps of Angst)

Well, I've probably bored everyone with my love rant So I'll leave it at that.

Yaoi is targeted at girls. I hear a lot of gay guys don't really care much for it.

I am open minded and a married woman... not anything except straight in terms of sexuality... but the mind can be anything it wants. If I was a guy, Id be gay... I cant help, but be honest cuz its me. I WAS HOOKED onto yaoi by pure chance and wont turn back.... makes my mind steer. Who cares?! Be yourself

It is mainly targeted to the ladies...as one said above it is an idealized romantic relationship that is not necessarily a gay love.

I find it very entertaining the very least and some of the story are very good but some are just trash .I actually listen to the BLCD but I cant stop laughing listening to my favorite seiyuu pretending they are going at it and some are really convincing.

I do have gay friends but I actually haven't seen them kiss pretty intimately so I don't know how I will react to that .I actually share to one couple some of my manga as long as the story is good. Sometimes they would comment and say, "is the writer a woman coz it feels like the character are females and not gay men".Anyway, reading and watching brings a totally different feeling .I dont like watching the BL live movies except for BB Mountain he he .

I am a married woman , and was raised in a very conservative religion. Reading these books are causing me alot of quilt but I still do it anyway buwaha ha ha I am heading towards h......

yaoi and yuri is really aimed for women. also the occasional gay.
oddly enough nearly all fans of yaoi and yuri would throw up if they saw real gays or lesbians have sex :P. i dont think they really know what goes on.

You really think only women (and apparently lesbians) would be interested in yuri?

You do realize Yuri is love between two women, correct? What makes you think straight guys wouldn't be interested in that?

Hmmmm.

joshrl... are you aware that you appear to be dismisive of female intellect by saying we don't "understand" the "real" content of the yaoi and/or yuri we watch.

That's foolish. Such sentiment is part of the sad shadow of misogyny which promotes the insane notion that women are not the equal of men. Sadly, men are not the only people who fall for this crap.

Trust me. Women are as able to understand their own sexual motivations and preferences as any man. But, say I let you off the hook and agree some people don't know the raunchy "real" details of live people having sex together.

So what?

Maybe some people will just explore and expand their sexual horizons by using nice soft porn, maybe with anime and manga. It will never matter if anyone, regardless of gender or sexual preference, ever goes further than that.

Quite a brilliant remark there... I agree with you entirely :)!
Plus...
it's not always about sex...
it's about passion, romance, relationships, feelings, emotions... etc.... oooooi.

I love watching yaoi and yuri. to me it's targeted to everyone, who has an open mind. in yuri I don't really like it, when I guy constantly pursues a woman who's not into men. I mean, you don't see that happening in yaoi do you? are at least not much.

I have always been under the impression that the primary demographic target for yaoi is women. You will notice that most yaoi manga are published in shojo or josei magazines. Yuri, on the other hand, while it originally was found in shojo and josei magazines, has found it's way into shounen and seinen magazines as well, though much of the yuri from those sources is aimed a little bit south of the heartstrings, in terms of the target area of the human body...

Also, please note that these terms do not necessarily refer to manga and anime that feature sexual relationships between same sex couples. Both are used to refer to same sex attraction, whether sexual, spiritual, or romantic, both explicit and implied. Many American fans seem to think that yuri in particular refers to showing actual sex or at least kissing between two women. That is not the case.

As for myself, I have never been a huge fan of yaoi, but there have been a few anime that I have enjoyed that had yaoi content or sub-plots. I have seen more shows with yuri content that I enjoyed, or even really loved. In general, I am a fan of romance anime and manga. If the romance happens to be yuri or yaoi, as long as the characters are interesting, the writing is good, the storyline is enjoyable, and the art is nice, I will enjoy it. Good romance is good romance! Good stories about friendships and relationships, whether sexual or emotional, will always appeal to me. (I really love Blue Drop and Maria Watches Over Us, both of which are firmly yuri, and the yuri content of
)

The one thing that will always turn me off is a rape, or some other type of serious physical abuse (other than the traditional tsundere type abuse that is used for comic effect in so many comedies.) Many yaoi stories seem to involve rape, and that is not romantic to me! (Maybe it would have been when I was younger, since I remember enjoying General Hospital during the "Luke & Laura" years of the 1980s, but I look back on that now and wonder how I, and a huge number of people across the country, could have enjoyed and cheered on a story about a rapist that then marries his victim and consider it one of the great TV love stories of the era! What kind of sickos were we? It still boggles the mind!)
