Brought to you by-
America: Land of the "Free"

Did you think ACTA, SOPA, and PIPA were bad?

Well, here comes the ultimate big brother law. Where the government can monitor your every action online and delete whatever they deem "harmful" to anyone online. If passed, CISPA could very well spell the end for free speech online.

I knew the SOPA/PIPA/ACTA fight wasn't over. The acts might have never been passed been defeated, but the ideas behind them never went away. Can't say I get the warm fuzzies when I think of a security firm being given civil and criminal immunity when it acts "in good faith." To be honest, I have not read the full text of the legislation, and don't know the full range of what is being proposed. The news item linked by @steph1425 only gave brief bits about CISPA.

We'll all have to watch this legislation closely.

dude its the far left AND the far right that are causing the problems, there are good and bad ideas on both sides of a isle and even from people in between. the problem is the people who want to remove freedom seem to be more organized and better at manipulation than those who want freedom...

honestly i think were screwed and that this country has a good chance of becoming a complete police state (like japan but probably worse) within 20 or so years. if were lucky we might avoid it but i doubt it personally . i just hope they don't implement it right and people wake up and rebel an armed rebellion if absolutely necessary, i just hope it never ever gets that bad.

Civil war II is coming to America! 12.21.12.... Why are we even worried about this? If the less intrusive laws failed to pass, why would this thing even be close?

**EDIT** After reading through the actual bill, its really not that bad... If reworded to eliminate some of the confusion, this is more about hackers and ID thieves, not piracy on the interwebs. They are not saying that you can't talk Bad about X. Its just saying that private cybersecurity firms, if they were the target of an attack, they will notify the government about the attack and it won't HAVE to be notified to the public.

As long as a cybersecurity firm acts in “good faith” according to these stipulations, it’s immune to civil or criminal lawsuits regarding information sharing.

This is the main problem I see within the bill... If their job as a cybersecurity firm is to protect YOUR information, and they fail, how then are they not liable for the outcome? It would be like... a police officer seeing someone getting the crap kicked out of them, not interfering, and then telling Big Poppa Government to cover their ass for not doing the proper thing. Or rather, it changes the proper thing to do to just telling the government instead of acting. And if some personable information got stolen, the cybersecurity firm wouldn't have to tell you. I mean, huh? Why wouldn't they have to tell you if your social security number or credit card numbers were stolen? Just because they notified the NSA about the attack, should not mean that the person(s) whose information was stolen should not also be notified so they can take the proper steps in defending against id theft.

I think that every time a bill is created three things are mandatory... cover the original intended purpose of the bill... which this one does to an extent... next go far beyond that original intention with broad language to cover a lot of other stuff that you may want to abuse with the new law in the future... three toss in a few of your own personal agenda items.

Ya'll better be careful about what you say, cause under this bill, a CR mod could pass your message along to Shinji who could then turn it over to the government... okay so that's a bit of an extreme example... but how about all these people who are, or claim, to be in anonymous... they use all kinds of different forms of communicating, now there would be nothing to stop any private company, even their e-mail providers, from turning over anyone who even mentioned anonymous in the right context to the government. They're going to have the feds knocking at their door when they have no real part in the group.

Sad thing is that I doubt any private company is really going to gain anything from this. I would imagine all the "information" the government sends over is going to be thoroughly scrubbed, blacked out, or just plain flat out not turned over because of security concerns.

Losing a lot of faith in the US congress to be able to do anything except for find ways to send our troops to god forsaken hell holes, strip away the freedom of their people, and spend ass-loads to the truckload to the death star load of taxpayer money.
