hi guys, Lately all of the anime i've been watching has had to capture a strange feeling in my heart. Its really hard to explain but i'll try. Have you ever watched a show and wished that you could be apart of there world. Maybe get away from this world, I have the need to escape from this world. Certain animes like Angel Beats! have definitely helped me. Is this normal

Actually, yes, it is quite normal to be swept up in an anime so much you long to be a part of that world. Happens to me all the time. There could be many factors, such as you seeing that world as ideal for you. I know a lot of anime, where the setting just seem ideal for one such as me, and I find myself wishing I were in that world instead. That's really the point of anime.

Thanks dude, I was worried that my lack of content in this life and reliance on anime to help me ease the realities of things. Was a bad thing I'm glad to know people feel the same way

All the time. Or rather, not so much anymore. It was so much before that I actually class all the first 20 or so animes I watched as nostalgic. Good memories. Also I shed a single manly tear when Zabuza died in Naruto.

Lol I felt bad for zabuza as well, I really shed a tear for poor haku.

I think if you enjoy an anime to the point where you feel connected to the characters then you will always feel emotional when something happens to disrupt their status quo. I mean I love One Piece, and I can't count the amount of times its nearly made me ball my eyes out. Another example would be Angel Beats with the Hinata/Yui story plot.

And as for an anime where I wish I could be part of their world. Erm, like All the time! One Piece especially. I have longed to be part of the Straw Hat Pirates throughout the years.

I think connecting to the characters is natural, and not something only with anime. I might not get teary-eyed, but I'll pull a rage quit of an episode if the status quo go out the door or they throw a major cliffhanger out. For me, if I can relate to the characters, it means that I'll keep watching the series again and again. Its something to buy and keep.

As for an anime world I would want to live in or be a part of ? I don't really know, never gave it much thought.

Absolutely. I would argue that escape is one of the primary purposes of any form of entertainment.

I think I might be pretty smack dab into what you're trying to describe here. Cause it isn't necessarily the world you want into, it's just kind of.. the way things feel, right?
I've kinda experienced things this way since I was a kid, with certain games and Pokemon. But I didn't really start to really pay attention to it until a few years ago, a while after starting to watch anime. I've noticed this feeling is much stronger in anime than in anything else with me.
It's... indescribable really, and that's what makes it so hard to convey how it feel to others. I've seen other people mentioning similar things, like how after watching an anime you almost feel like your personality changes to match the characters from the show a little. The feelings really lingers.
So yeah, I don't really know how to describe it. It's like anime somehow manages to heighten ones emotions or bring forth emotions in some people, that they never knew they had. At least it does with me. The whole atmosphere of the shows differs from the one I feel in real life and it's unlike anything I've experienced in any other forms of media. Some games like Zelda Ocarina of time kinda have let me experience a feeling that could be compared I guess, but I can't say it's quite the same.
Though practically all anime carry this trait. Examples of animes that have created really brilliant moods/atmospheres/emotions for me are:
The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad, five centimeters per second, spirited away, School days(kind of a strange example really, left me depressed for almost 3 days, was new to anime and did not know what I was in for...), Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Hanasaku Iroha, Nausicaa of the valley of the wind and many more.

So here's my little theory, when we're mesmerized in these worlds, we manage to let go of whatever we fear in daily life, you escape from those things you fear, hence the term escapism. Manga and anime is also designed to suck you into the characters emotions, and create a strong sympathy between you and them.
The thing is. What I believe, is that it is possible to attain an experience of real life in such a way that it kind of "feels" like an anime. And the only feeling/atmosphere from an anime I've personally managed to somehow realize in real life at times, is part of the one in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, it pretty much changed my life in some ways.
So since escapism is pretty close to the core I figure that part of it is to be able to let go of things one fear in real life, all those barriers that cause disdain, pride, hate, and all those other things that's uncomfortable. I find that trying to appreciate everything brings me closer somehow.... but yet I can't pinpoint things.... I wish I could find this one sentence that would explain everything for me... and I feel I'm so close at times, but no...
So yeah, I think it has to do with a way to view the world, and that it's managable to make real life "feel" anime-esque. After all, the feelings we feel when we watch anime stem from ourselves, the shows just activates them.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Just try next time you watch an anime... things just feel somehow different don't they?
By now I feel that the world around me is kind of covered by a veil or something that doesn't let me see it for it's true beauty, the way anime does.. like something is hindering me from getting mesmerized by it.
Or maybe... I'm just crazy... :/

I used to feel like that when I was 14-16. I had a real obsession with anime and Japanese culture. I wanted to live there, I wanted to BE Japanese, I wanted to be apart of an anime. I wanted to have similar experiences to anime characters.

I grew out of it though. I'm more firmly rooted in reality than ever before.

But it's normal. If a work of art is good enough to touch you, that's a good thing. It happens with books, it happens with paintings... it happens with anime.

I actually felt the same for Angel Beats! It was really heart-warming. It taught me to appreciate my life more and not to be afraid to pursue the things I want to accomplish in life coz there are so many people out there that can't do those stuff.

I think it's perfectly acceptable, some people just don't enjoy reality like others. Not saying they don't enjoy reality but find it pale in comparison to the beautiful stories depicted in some anime. I think I've had an exciting life but I like to break away from reality and just imagine another world entirely. That's what I love about anime, even books, movies or dramas. Do I hold emotional attachments to some? Hell yes I do and I think I'm a better person for it.

the anime world is much more awesome with deathly notebooks
