I recently came across this http://www.jadij.com/2011/05/japan-and-high-school.html and thought back to all the anime I have watched until now.

The vast majority of the setting and characters are high school related.

I'm astonished there arent more anime series with middle school settings/characters

I look back at my youth and that was probably my most cherished time. I was carefree, and it was a time of firsts. Being from western culture I was very precocious so many things I had already experienced just prior to entering high school.

Do you guys know of any decent anime in that type of setting?

Middle school setting? Or highschool setting?
If you're talking highschool, then watch CLANNAD.

There's SKET Dance for high school.

In general I think they prefer mid-late teens (aka highschool) as that is the typical target audience.

Shugo Chara is a good anime in a middle school setting. Also, Prince of Tennis (although some of those characters look like they're ready to graduate college.) Combine those two and you get over 300 episodes, so it should keep you busy for a while.

As for the why it's mostly high school... well, my guess is they feel limited in the romance category if the characters are underage.

Yeah, I feel like High School is the target audience here. It's kind of cool to see the high school anime from time to time -- let's me live the high school life I wish I had. But the scenarios get a little repetitive pretty quickly. Casts made entirely of adults is a bit of a rarity, which makes them much more interesting, plus I can relate to them a lot more now. The themes are usually much more intriguing as well. All in all, more adult anime please!

Edit: Just to be clear, I don't mean Hentai. Lol.

The target audience goes to school so go with what you know.

Right?

It's the target audience. Teens want to watch high school life, middle and elementary have more the 'magical' themes, like Shugo Chara, Tokyo Mew Mew, etc. But I'd love to see more adult characters. I enjoyed Nana and World's Greatest First Love, but that's the only two I can name off the top of my head that's all or majorly adult.

I'd like to insult you, but I can't think of anything good.

That's because most people who watch anime are in high school , and those who are not in high school had already been in high school .....Thus Anime is about high school

Demographic, that's all. Someone already explained the shonen/shoujo genres briefly.

Slightly off topic maybe but for me middle school was the worst time I've had to live through. High school was much more fun.

I suppose both of you fail in reading comprehension and did not even make it past high school.

I never in my post inquired why there was an obsession with high school, i remarked in a matter of fact observation that the proportion of middle school anime is not the same as ones in a high school setting which is true, and I already can understand the reasons for this.

I inquired about more anime in the middle school setting as a request to the community.

No where in my post did I ask why high school was emphasized. But then again, what should expect ?

Why is your thread called "Japanese obsession with high school environment" If you aren't at all interested in talking about high schools. That's really misleading.

If you want people to recommend animes that are about carefree middle school life. Say so. Don't wrap it in the guise of something that could actually be a somewhat interesting subject to discus.
