Impressions

Hmm...so this short sci-fi anime ended today...and my thoughts of it so far:

So this series is by Leiji Matsumoto whom some of you may or may not be familiar with. Tbh, I'm not familiar with him even though I know his status as a well-known creator of anime/manga series. Anyways, regrading the first episode...

The OP is English and well, not too shabby but also not something I'll remember for a long time. The art so far is alright and the music is average. The first episode starts off somewhat vague but enjoyable. There's quite a lot of comedy and there's some drama. The only part I have a problem with is the voice actor Tetsuya Kakihara so far as he voices Natsu from Fairy Tail and I'm not a big fan of his. Overall so far, not too impressed but also something to keep an eye on.

Overall, I enjoyed it, especially the submarine-style battles. But, the ending left a bit to be desired. It was too rushed and "mystical", imo.

TL;DR version: Galaxy Express 999 good. Ozma shoddy and forgettable.

I'm a big fan of Matsumoto's Galaxy Express 999. I love the TV series -- it's a great mix of fairytale storytelling and sci-fi. By fairytale storytelling I mean that every episode was like a parable of some kind. A planet they landed on would represent an idea and their arrival somehow causes that idea to be uprooted because the Galaxy Express train or Maetel and Tetsuro represent some form of change or escape for the inhabitants. You can watch that one on Crunchyroll and I recommend it even though it's 113 episodes. You'll just have to get over the dated animation. Oh and there's some really wacky scenarios. Some of them wacky great, but others just what-where-you-smoking bizarre, but maybe that's great too. It seems that GE999 is pretty iconic in Japan still. Ano Natsu de Matteru references it and so does Densha Otoko if you've ever seen the tv drama.

As for Ozma, I felt that it was pretty forgettable, and despite the decent art in the show, the animation was shoddy at times. Small spoiler: there's an episode with a food fight. Was it just me, or did that food fight just seem, uh, really lazily animated? I'm not talking about animation reuse, but trays and food getting "thrown" were just still images moving across the screen and not in the space the characters inhabited (the ship's galley). It's a minor thing, but after 6 episodes that is the only thing I remember with clarity. It also reminds me that a lot of the new shows created under Matsumoto's name have questionable quality. I've seen Space Symphony Maetel and Maetel Legend and they're not great.

Also, moral of the story: in a serious (sci-fi) drama, don't call your character "Dick." It's difficult to listen when half of Emeraldas' lines in a scene are just her screaming his name.

There was a promise maybe more than a decade ago of a whole new epic by Matsumoto that would span GE999, Yamato, Emeraldas, and Harlock, but it never seemed to materialize into anything more than five new GE999 manga and the Galaxy Express: Eternal Fantasy movie. I haven't checked out Galactic Railways. I hear that one's supposed to be really good, and there was even an episode where we meet GE999 again.

I enjoyed it. Not having watched GE 999 or Galaxy railways I can't compare them. I can see why people say it was rushed but i feel it was still very well made for the limited amount of time it was given

Final episode 6: The Day of New Life

Well it appears that Maya had to make a very difficult decision this episode by herself. The mystery of Ozma is revealed and Dick's revelation is revealed.

Well, overall, I didn't really enjoy this series although I did like the art style and music. The characters were a bit confusing to understand and it seems that the series was just rushed. LOL, the OP was in English, you can understand every word of it if you listen carefully. Anyways, I did somewhat enjoy the series but this is not something I'll remember by for years. If you are a fan of Leiji Matsumoto, you will love this. At least, I hope.

Some sci-fi anime written by Leiji Matsumoto. I barely paid attention to it though

Only few parts I enjoyed and the music was alright. Other than that, not worth mentioning.

It had the skill to really grab you quick and get you into the story. The plot was ok to good and even with scant (due undoubtedly to the series length) background you could like the characters. As everyone has said the ending was rushed and terrible. Here is a hint, it ok to have a message but if you have to actually have one of your characters say the message you failed as a writer. A great show lets the viewer come to the message by watching. The science was pathetic but hey I'm willing to let a lot slide by for a good story. How was man not still the highest life form? There were still a lot of people with weapons even after the chosen children's ships were destroyed. What really changed? How was the life better adapted, they were formed in a wet sealed environment. There was no sign of the greening of the world outside of what should be a rapidly drying hole after it was opened to the outside. Creatures do not create an ecosystem, they adapt into it and may change it but fish and water lilies would not change a desert. A better ending might have been for Ozuma to have caused some rain or something and the survivors charged to be the protectors of the fragile slice of the life in its place. Same message but not so "green mystic", eco-snobby and preachy.

1) It was a six episode series, so I am not sure what many of the whiners were expecting.

2) It was a great "short story", with old school style.

3) The writer is older, Dick as a name was not an offensive word for the VAST majority of the writer's lifetime. The fact that so many are so hung up on it shows lack of maturity.

4) To bad it wasn't a 13 or 26 episode series so it could be fleshed out.

5) Whiners, please return to the complex plot of your loliboobs anime.

I enjoyed this series quite a bit. The old style designs were nice and the story was interesting enough for a 6 episode series. I didn't feel like the ending was that rushed or anything. It does leave the story open for you to interpret what could happen next. A lot of people seemed to have completely overlooked this anime or wrote it off without even watching it though. Overall I think it did great with the amount of episodes it had and is a good sci-fi series. I give it a 8/10 and really wouldn't mind seeing more anime like this.
