Synopsis:

Oreki Hotaro is a high school boy, who always acts passively. One day, he enters "Koten Bu (Classic Literature Club)" as recommended by his elder sister.

There he meets Chitanda Eru, Fukube Satoshi, and Ibara Mayaka. Chitanda is a calm beautiful girl but she turns into an embodiment of curiosity once she says, "I'm interested in it (Watashi, Kininarimasu)". Fukube is a smiling boy with a fantastic memory, he never deduces anything on his own. Ibara is a short girl and is strict with others and herself. She loves Fukube, but he always dodges her approaches.

They begin to investigate a case that occurred 33 years ago. Hints of the mystery are buried in an old collection of works of the former members of Koten Club. The collection is titled "Hyouka".

Main Characters & Voice Actors

Houtarou Oreki
Yūichi Nakamura
An energy-saver guy with a motto: "If I don't have to do it, I won't. If I have to do it, I'll make it quick". He's considered lazy and apathetic, always living on the 'gray' side, is not interested in any activities that might waste his time and energy. Actually never intended to join any club, but his sister ordered him to join the Classics Club to save it from being disbanded. Even though he might looked not interested, he's unbelievably good at solving mysteries

Eru Chitanda
Voiced by: Satomi Satō
Eru is the single daughter of the Chitanda Family, a remainder of one of the four wealthy farming families, according to Satoshi. She joined the classic club in search of something.

Satoshi Fukube
Voiced by: Daisuke Sakaguchi
Satoshi went to the same middle school as Houtarou and Mayaka. He knows a lot of things, but most of all are trivial ones. Is really cheerful and a great match to befriend the apathetic Houtarou.

Mayaka Ibara
Voiced by: Ai Kayano
An inseparable friend who's been in the same class with Houtarou since their first grade in elementary school. She has an interest in Satoshi, which is what leads her to join the classic literature club.

it is like yeah..........

what am I watching???

a bit too dialogue heavy for me, it also didn't give much of a premise of what I (audience) should be watching for:

so I'm like watching it, and trying to find a theme/genre of this anime and it is one of those i don't care protagonist that is actually really really smart kinda animes

I don't think this series will be interesting, why?

Because if you strip this anime down to it's core of mystery solving you're not going to have much story development in terms of relate-ability to the characters.

What you will get is constant problem solving, now how the producer/director can introduce story development is if one of the stories can be traced back to the characters.

Episode 1.

Good pilot episode. It was very interesting to watch.
It kinda reminded me of Bakuman's Perfect Crime Party for some reason.
The art was very good, and the music as well! I especially loved the OP.

Pretty.

Episode 1

Well, after waiting for nearly 3 weeks, this series finally premiered. (although there was a special premiere @ Kadowaka Cinema, Shinjuku if you were lucky enough to be there).

Anyways, it's starts off as a typical school setting. Our MC is here is named Houtarou Oreki who in his minds and his friend describes him as someone who is not keen in joining clubs, play sports, or socializing.

Dat eyes!

So right off the bat, we have a little mystery involving locked rooms and such.

Beautiful, just beautiful:

Well, an overall enjoyable episode especially for a nice Sunday night, right? I mean, the art is nice and the OP song is catchy. There wasn't too much action in this first episode and not all the characters were introduced. Still, with the current characters and their contrasting personalities, I'm enjoying this series so far. Anyways, looking forward to next week of this mystery series.

Ep1 is overrated.
GAH, what's with all the 8-10 scores of it after just 1 ep on MAL? :P
It was not that great.
Just becaus it's KyoAni doesn't mean it's a masterpiece.

The mystery aspect in ep 1 was boring.

Earlier this morning I watched 3 episodes of Ozma, and the amazement of it is:

Ozma has a rating of is below 7 while this anime Hyoka is above an 8 (myanimelist)

All I keep reading is how good the animation is, how good the graphics are for this anime; which I completely agree 100% and if you compare the graphics with Ozma currently we (the audience) are more familiar and more pleased to see the styles pertaining to Hyoka.

however

I guarantee, that the first episode of Ozma in terms of actual story it complete rapes Hyoka.

So what am I getting at?

I truly believe that ignorance towards a bias to graphics has made Hyoka COMPLETELY overrated.

Before some of you defend this anime, ask yourself:

What did I watch?

What is the story about?

What is the genre/theme?

How are these aspects related and correlated?

_______________________________________________________________

as for me

I don't know what I watch, I watched something I just don't know what.

The story is not mystery it is not about much, what it is about is, is the protagonist doing stuff for the heroine, that is truly the underlying story.

I have no idea and we are talking about me here that has no freaking clue lol.

The correlation is guy does stuff for girl, in terms of really really bad mysteries in which the story will trick the audience to think "oh it is a mystery" but no it is more guy does stuff for girl with no actual development BECAUSE the premise was not set in the opening episode.

ps. also about the account that was just made and like just to quote not actually quote me wtf is that about?

Really?
Judging an anime based on the first episode alone?
Hyouka didn't have the best first episode out of the spring lineup but it certainly wasn't bad.
People will just find anything to hate on what's popular.

Why don't we all just watch 3 episodes of each and come back later to bitch?

I don't know. I've only seen the first episode so far, so....

See above answer.

Same answer.

Anyway, I can't fully judge an anime based on its first episode alone.
It was basically just an introductory episode, and nothing more.
The story will probably be told later on so we'll just have to wait until something happens.

It could turn out to be crap like *insert crappy animoo here* or the opposite.
The first episode doesn't make the whole anime.

Not going to defend it, I was bored by the first ep.

1. An anime that gets called a masterpiece becaus of the artwork.
2. Apparently about mystery solving, solving the mystery around some club. I don't expect much from that plot.
3. Mystery (the other mystery animes I've seen lately have been great from first ep)
4. What do you mean? :P

Gonna say this again:
First impressions counts alot, on anime too.
