I agree with you about how the characters and their relationships are much better than your average show, but I think you misunderstood something in Episode 2 if you think that Mayaka and Oreki used to date! Yes, Satoshi called them the "best couple at Kaburaya Junior High" he was being totally sarcastic. They both responded with complete denial: Oreki: "Yeah, right!" and Mayaka: "Me? With this gloomy looser? I'd rather deal with a slug!" Then she proceeds to chide him by saying "I can't believe you'd say something that mean even though you know how I feel." Eventually leading up to the actual explanation of the exchange:

Yeah I guess there's no way to tell if she actually liked him at one point before or not, but there certainly seems to have been something between them before. I just got through watching the Hyouka Summer Special and in it she throws some more hints at their past "relationship" by saying things like "I liked you better the way you were before when you had some fight in you". I just got the feeling of something more than casual acquaintances from those first lines she said when she was introduced in ep 2. They seemed like the lines somebody would say to someone who parted with them on bad terms and they never wanted to see again. That and Oreki's reaction when he first found out he and Chitanda would be going to the library. It looked like the same kind of reaction of someone who didn't want to run into an ex-girlfriend or something. And I just figured it was during this time in their past when they were dating/hanging out or whatever that he found out she really likes Satoshi. But yeah I hadn't thought of the love triangle thing. Intriguing idea.....hmmmm.... (LOL)

Whatever their past was, be it something more than just friends, or just a couple of kids the rest of the school liked to tease about being a couple because they wanted to see them as one (which is what I'm leaning towards), it's agreed it's a nice change of pace from the standard anime formula. And in this latest ep, it looks like they have the groundwork set for not one but TWO mysteries at the festival. Thought to be honest I'd be genuinely surprised if they weren't related (things from 2 clubs missing around the same time). But darn I wish they'd show a bit more of the Vocaloids. I want to see those cosplayers take a more active role in the upcoming ep(s).

I'm sticking with my bet that she resents the fact that Satoshi is so attached to this lazy, gloomy loser (from her point of view). The fact that she had no idea how good he is at deduction suggests that they weren't particularly close in middle school. (Satoshi already knew about it. If you recall, he told Eru in the first episode about it.)

It could also be just a fundamental personality clash, as she is a very earnest, hard working type and she probably views Oreki's tendency to avoid work to be a truly despicable trait.

I was actually a little disappointed that he didn't admit to looking at them. Felt a little out of character, but maybe that was intended to show a future weakness

I wondered if he would fess-up to it as well. There is no doubt that she is his weakness, though! Has he ever been able to deny her satisfaction when she appealed to him with those stunning eyes of hers? (Though, in episode 11.5, he didn't look at the eyes first... LOL! Neither did any heterosexual male watching the episode... But that was just because of how it was shown, honest! Right?)

I'd say the "fundamental personality clash" is a given with these two. The question here is exactly how they knew each other beforehand. And the fact that she didn't know how good he was at deduction could be attributed to this. Think about it: we all know people who because of a personality clash we may have not noticed their good traits right off.

Speaking of mysteries, we as viewers seem to have one right here. What exactly was Oreki's and Mayaka's past with each other? Were they in a class together at one point and some other classmates saw them hanging out together outside of class and just started a rumor about them? Did some of their classmates just look at their different personalities and think "aww, they'd be cute together", and start teasing them about being a couple? Did they just get repeatedly get paired up for school projects or something the year before by sheer coincidence?

I would like to know what others think about what it could be because.....I....I can't.....I CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT!!!

Episode 14

Mayaka the star of this episode tbh

But of course, Eru is also curious and those cute purple eyes says it all.

Intermission quote:

When the light and dark are in balance

And what a cooking battle, Hyouka style with the curious Eru, enthusiastic Satoshi, and spunky Makaya. Great episode!

So true...

This was a fantastic episode! So much cuteness! Eru asking Irisu-sempai for advice on how to ask for favors - like she needs it! Just use those devastating eyes! Now, armed with the manipulative prowess of the Empress, Eru will be completely unstoppable! No one will be able to resist the urge to do her bidding!

Mayaka was amazingly cute in this episode, but Chitanda was as adorable as ever.

I'm glad Misaki was in this one, even though she was only a bit character. I love her crazy hairstyle. Also shes seems to be a bit of a pyro. lol

There's irony in that scene with Irisu and Chitanda. Chi-chan was asking to be taught how to get people to do favors and she used her amazing purple eyes to get Irisu to do her a favor by teaching her how to do favors.

Well, next week's episode preview seems to have Chitanda trying out her new skills on Oreki. Maybe it's a mad combination of getting Oreki alone to ask for a favor while staring him down with that I'm sooooo curious look.

I liked how Oreki ended up with that food product that ended up being the final ingredient their cooking team needed.

traded a broken pen for a safety pin for a water gun for a bag of....what was that stuff again? Some kind of sweetened starch or something?

Anyway it looks like Oreki's big sister saved the day again without having to even lift a finger. She just tossed a broken pen to him and BAM, the chain of events were set in motion. What a bad ass!

I hope we actually get to see her face before the last episode airs, but I have a funny feeling she's going to be like that neighbor on that ABC sitcom "Home Improvement", or Norm's wife from that old NBC sitcom "Cheers". Y'know....the character who they never really show the face, but just hear their voice or see a part of their head or something. Ah well, I imagine her as being extremely hot anyway.

In my opinion the last few episodes have been the most interesting of the series. The plot can be a bit lacking at times, sometimes even a little boring, but it's a decent show. It does have, by far, the best animation amongst all the anime I've watched this year, without a doubt.
