This seems to have been sufficiently answered by a number of women already. As many have said already, it's essentially to be(or look) taller, which seems to give one a somewhat more elegant appearance, and thus also goes well with formal or evening wear. My wife concurs! She normally never wears heels, but willingly insisted on and sufffered through these huge 4-6 inch ones for our wedding! Now, after that one day, those shoes will likely sit forever unused in our closet! Apparently, it's quite a skill to walk in those without injuring oneself!

It makes your legs and butt look more shapely/curvier. You don't need 5 inch stilletos for that, just a good 3 to 3.5 inch heel is neccessary. I may wear super high heels occasionally but never on the regular. Those are bad for your feet.

Just because you personally don't like them, doesn't mean they're "pointless". There are things that you like that others may deem "pointless".
I don't wear heels often myself, but they're fun and sexy to wear sometimes. No need to look down on girls who wear them. They're just doing their own thing just like you are.

High heels puts the wearer in a position called 'lordosis' which makes the butt stick out more and makes females appear more receptive to mating.
High heels are not very good, health wise, for the wearer.

Well, legs look a lot longer in heels
Not to mention the height gained by wearing them. I would never wear heels for height though, I like being short :l
