I've been thinking about buying a few manga magazines from Amazon Japan for the promotional items that sometimes come with them. Like the Natsume ice-cube tray in June's issue of Lala. Has anyone ordered manga magazines from Amazon Japan before? If you have, did they come with the promotional items or just the magazine itself?

Would you ever consider buying a manga magazine (in Japanese) just for the promotional item?

No, because I have no interest in small gimmicks to make me purchase something I cannot read.

I was on vacation in Vancouver a few years back, and explored an area called Richmond which had a variety of east Asian stores. One of the things I purchased while there was an import magazine. It talked about a lot of products which have never been localized, and a few which never even had a fan translation.

Back in the late 90s, when it looked like some popular and influential manga series would never have official translations, I bought a few untranslated trade paperbacks, so that I would have a better appreciation of the text-only translations which were available at the time. From about 2002 through 2008, there was so much available in English that I stopped importing. It's only been in the last two years that I've started to think again about buying untranslated TPBs for series that may never be licensed in print or online formats.

I bought some Hana to Yume manga magazines before, and one of them had a drama CD with it. Besides that I have a few manga and an art book in Japanese as well(mostly The World God Only Knows). I did buy vol. 16 of TWGOK for the limited edition mechanical pencil. :p

I used to get imported magazines until the exchange rate went all wonky. Now the JPY is so high I have decided to scale way back on imported purchased. I would personally never buy a magazine for what was included, most of the time it is worthless junk. Better to spend you money on actual items you want (Ebay, Jlist, or a local Asian center).
It used to be if something was 700 yen after shipping and stuff it would be about 7 bucks, now it is like 11-14 buck + shipping.

If you can't read them then there really is no benefit to getting them, instead just wait until they get translated.

Or you can take my route, and learn Japanese, it has a surprising side effect of allowing me to advance much further in my job than i had expected.

Putting aside the lousy exchange rates, no. I'm not fluent enough in Japanese to read anything so I'm not going to bother buying books. I have bought CDs though. I don't think I'd be willing to buy a manga magazine, just to get the promo item. Shipping is an absolute killer for printed material. If I were fluent in Japanese and there was some series I REALLY wanted to follow, then I MIGHT consider buying manga magazines, but as it is now--I don't plan on importing anything other than music CDs.

Promo item? I almost, almost, bought one for that reason. I didn't even know what it was, it was just big. And I wanted it. I didn't buy it because it was expensive. D: And I'm one cheap telephone booth.
