Hi Everyone,

I've been meaning to make this post for some time now (I was trying to coincide this with the penultimate Gintama ep dedicated to a kotatsu), as someone close to my project had mentioned it as a way to get the message out, but due to prior commitments I've been unable to do so.

I'm currently in the process of crowd sourcing a project at Kickstarter and I thought I'd reach out to others who may share a similar interest for Japanese culture. I built a working prototype kotatsu (2.0) and I am currently trying to obtain the resources necessary to finish my revised 3.0 design which will be a more polished version of 2.0 and be able to Market them to those who wish to purchase them on a made-to-order scale.

I undertook a lengthy Market research process--which can be followed on my blog--and after this process I came to the conclusion that the plastic kotatsu products (Made in China) currently available in the Market are inadequately and disproportionally priced for what they offer; you can arrive to your own conclusions based upon this data found on my blog. With this is in mind I decided to create a unique and novel design to create my kotatsu.
The entire process can be followed from the beginning in detail on my blog:
http://ibuildkotatsu.wordpress.com/about/

I'm currently offering the following prizes for your contributions and participation:

I made every effort to make participation accessible to everyone, regardless of budget. In addition to this I have embraced animating contributors who decide to join our project and I'm currently working on the 3rd installment doing just that as we speak. We have currently reached 10% funding and are listed on the Popular list for Design projects on Kickstarter amongst multimillion dollar projects. I look forward to you participation as well as your insight.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for ruining the surprise, and yes you're right; I have been working on them amongst other things. Oh, well the secret is out. But the important question is what else is in there? And two will be made available in a recorded, but hopefully live, raffle.

Just a guess but do you happen to live in Malaysia or Indonesia? After conducting my thorough research, and while trying to acquire Japanese made heaters I made a surprising discovery, oddly enough many of the 'better made' heaters have been manufactured in both nations for some time now. This happened before the yen gathered strength, too. (Furthermore, the poorly made and engineered plastic tables are made in China. how's that for what is truly a Japanese product?)

What many people tend to overlook is that Japan is in fact a muggy-humid and hot country comprised of a collection of islands, too. I think it was in 2010 that they broke the record for the hottest/longest summer ever in recorded History. And, as you likely know, they are still mainstays in any Japanese home all year around. You don't need to plug it in during the hotter temperature days. Just store the futon away, and place some chilled pocari sweat next to the bowl of oranges and you're set!

Now, if you live in India or one of the Arab nations with intolerable heat waves year-round... then its tricky. But I'd like to remind you that I do have other prizes including Japanese snacks and drinks. And a chance to win a fukubukuro which is bound to contain something you like to help you forget the heat, and just because you mentioned it a fan will be in both fukubukuro so you can also use it while making takoyaki or yakitori when it cools down outside in the evening. Tempting, right?

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Well, the model shown (2.0) is still in prototype, and I'm open to varnishing and staining to a specified color--I just prefer working and the results achieved with oils. But what did you have in mind?

Something like this?

Or is this more to your liking?

I'm sure I can commission his work if so desired. Hell, I'm sure he'd get a kick out of it. (I wonder what he would say about my genki-kun series?)

Then I welcome you to get involved.

I'll tell you what, just to entice you guys a bit further; if I get fully funded I will have him come up with something equally as insane for my current table-top! I'll let you vote for which images should go on. Its a piece that I personally have put about 30 hours into it; I built it from scratch, planed it (and subsequently broke the imbedded knot in the corner when doing the edges) and proceeded to oil and sand it for 3 months.

Here it is at... I think coat number 8 or so, it has about 14 now (Tonkatsu and Sake not subject to these conditions.):

My camcorder takes mediocre stills, 5mp or something like that, so it hardly does it justice and its now become a radiant dark-blond color when the light hits it. I like it how it is but my offer stands!

I just finished my latest installment of Genki-kun with a contributor's animated avatar. I welcome everyone to take a look at it on my project's listing under UPDATES.

Well, aside from the banter and good cheer; I'm exhibiting my Kickstarter project to an audience of what I have gauged are like minded individuals. It focuses around my previous (2.0 ) kotatsu and current (3.0) design. (Hence the screen name and title of the thread.) If successful, I will be able to create custom all wood kotatasu on a made-to-order basis, as seen in my links, for competitive Market prices to what is currently available at present.

Here are the links where you can follow the process:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1831661922/kotatsu-hon-nippon-no-mono
http://ibuildkotatsu.wordpress.com/about/

And for your contribution I have listed a series of meaningful and tasteful Japanese-themed prizes in return, in addition to my sincere gratitude. For your convenience they are listed as follows:

$1+ (Arigatou): My sincere gratitude expressed in an email with a seasonal themed e-card for making a contribution, name listed as sponsor on website and product pamphlet. Bonus: you will be entered into a drawing to win a Fukubukuro (Japanese Lucky bag!) worth $100!

$5+ (Arigatou Plus): Hand written letter of appreciation, name listed as sponsor on website and product pamphlet. Bonus: you will be entered into a drawing to win a Fukubukuro (Japanese Lucky bag!) worth $200!

$10+ (Arigatou gozaimashita): Hand written letter of appreciation, assortment of Japanese snacks*, name listed as sponsor on website and product pamphlet. Bonus: you will be automatically entered to win (1 of 3) a 6” scale kotatsu!

$35 (Doumo arigatou gozaimashita): Wabi Sabi ocha cup (Made In Japan), Japanese snacks, hand written letter of appreciation, name listed as sponsor on website & product pamphlet. Bonus: you will be automatically entered to win a (1 of 3) 6” scale kotatsu!

$65 (Honto ni arigatou gozaimashita): Cast Iron tea pot trivet (Made in Japan) and Japanese snacks (pocky/kit-kat etc…), name listed as sponsor on website & product pamphlet. Bonus: you will be automatically entered to win (1 of 3) a 6” scale kotatsu

$125-250 (Honto ni arigatou gozaimashita deluxe!): Hand-crafted wooden sign (Made in USA) with your desired inscription or 6” scale kotatsu, Japanese snacks (pocky/kit-kat etc…), hand written letter of appreciation, name listed as sponsor on website & product pamphlet

$300-350 (Kampai!): Hand-crafted wooden sign (Made in USA) with your desired inscription or 6” kotatsu, Wabi Sabi ocha cup x 2, Wabi Sabi sake cup x 2, Japanese snacks (tailored to your tastes), hand written letter of appreciation, name listed as sponsor on website & product pamphlet!

$450+ (Yatta!): Your own Mark I Kotatsu (+S/H), Wabi Sabi ocha cup x 2, pack of Japanese snacks (tailored to your tastes), hand written letter of appreciation, name listed as sponsor on website & product pamphlet!

$1000+ (Yatta deluxe!): All of the above + tour and demonstration of operation grounds + sponsors Luncheon and an exclusive Wine Cruise in Dana Point, CA!

As I said I made it so that contributions are accessible to all budgets. And I welcome the interaction and feedback you may have to offer in order to improve! Its my idea of fun-interactive (Free Market) based quid-pro-quo.

Also, I just got a notice from Rinkya that my artisan ocha and sake cups have arrived in the US. So in a few days I'll be updating the photos, and also try to get some more glamor shots of the kotatsu since the current one is when it was recently built, bare and unsanded. I think this weekend we might actually see the sun in what is supposed to be Sunny Southern California.

We're at 10% with 15 days to go, and on the popular list amongst the company of the ever-popular $6 million+ pebble watch! While it would be nice to reach that kind of funding and have those kind of resources at my disposal, I think my modest project and projected budget can be equally as entertaining--I've even thrown my hat into try out animation with what my contributor's have regarded as 'simple but charming' results.

Well, I hope that clears things up, ZenZaku; and I personally would like to welcome you to join our project! Who knows? You might be one of the lucky few to get a fukubukuro, which may or may not have a 6-month pass to CR. I'm afraid I can't say more...
