Let me see if I can explain this with images:

The phylogeny of Kotatsu!

First there was

Then there was a significant divergence in the Human genome... and Mankind's History was changed forever

A kotatsu, as anyone who has used one will tell you, is in actuality one of the gems of Japanese culture--if not a tenet. It gives a home it's soul and purpose and identifies it as uniquely Japanese thus giving what would be just another room the proper ambiance to host its family/guests as they have for 1000's of years. To put it in perspective, a kotatsu is as indispensable to the Japanese as a 'fry-up/chippy' a 'bacon sarnie' or a 'cuppa' is in your part of the World.

You can read all about it in great detail in my blog and project link. Here are the links where you can follow the process:

PS: Kagura seems to think so.

Well, I may not be Japanese but I used the concept of 懐かしい(natsukashii ) as the central theme in my video; it’s what I think of when I think of what real Japanese culture is--and in my experience a kotatsu definitely ranks quite high. Despite not being Japanese I grew up around the culture from a young age beginning with martial arts and later into young adulthood with motorsports, so I got to meet many Japanese and befriended several as well so I learned a great deal... and I even began speaking it to their collective surprise!

Here is the second edit of my video titled 懐かしい, I couldn’t upload this cut since it makes note of the Save Japan campaign (created and supported by professional Japanese drivers in various forms of Motorsports and enthusiasts alike) for the victims of Fukushima which I will be involved in if we're successfully funded: 10% of each kotatsu table sold will be donated to this and one other charity currently on the ground. I begin by taking the viewer on a vicarious trip into what it would be like to be around and enter a kotatsu, and then I end it by allowing you to see/sit in a first-person view of a chanomibanashi with me! (Well that was the message I wanted to convey anyhow, I hope I have.)

I welcome you to get involved either way, just to be a part of it, so that you may have the opportunity to purchase one later if you decide to purchase one—I will keep my contributors names permanently embedded in my mind. They will be custom-made to your size-specifications and you can purchase one later if/when you decide to do so.

I also have some pretty cool prizes for all levels of contributions and even a chance to win 2 different Fukubukuro that will each contain some prizes that even I am kind of excited about making. In particular the mini-kotatsu , which has been sitting on my desk for a week now waiting for the 15th layer of oil to dry and be completed. I’m still undecided on a little detail regarding the leg design-look and how/where I can place the futon fabric. It’s a display model, but in my opinion it should still look comparable to the 1:1 scale table.

I hope you decide to join our project!

you finally decided to put the word out, huh? well better late than never.

i haven't dropped in on your blog since we last talked, its coming along nicely i see. i'm still trying to convince my roommates to let me put one in the living room of our apartment, I'll get back to you if it works out. LOL i'd put in my room but then I'd worry of being all hikikomori when its cold. but yeah I hope it works, I got my fingers crossed for ya, i want to see what you decide to put in those fukubukuro, didn't you tell me you were going to make some wooden geta or somthin in one a while back? let me know how it goes.

Thanks for ruining the surprise, and yes you're right; I have been working on them amongst other things. Oh, well the secret is out. But the important question is what else is in there? And two will be made available in a recorded, but hopefully live, raffle.

It's fine, what's done is done.

Also, I was scouring the internet for this clip of a kotatsu, but to no avail. I first came across it when I was making the blue prints for 2.0, and I even included a screen cap of it on my project listing because I thought it conveyed the right sentiment.

Its a clip from Nodame Live action and their affinity for kotatsu. Disclaimer: Its hard to watch this and not want to crawl under a kotatsu soon after:

It helps if you understand/speak Japanese, since it has (what I can only guess given the uploader's name) viet subs; but you should still get an understanding of what the ambiance is like around a kotatsu and how naturally addicting it can be--I know, I have first hand experience... I did 48 hours straight with 2.0 and I had to (often grudgingly) convince myself to get out and do stuff.

Very kotatsumuri.
