Hi guys

I'm here for a help with my report on "Japanese popular culture in the world ― example : Japanese cute: why has Hello Kitty gained global popularity?". I'm sure you guys are all aware off Hello Kitty so it's not the only thing I would write on my report. I might be familiar with anime and manga like most of us here. However, I'm not sure if any other Japanese cultures that make an impact on other societies except Hello Kitty, manga and anime. So any help is welcome here :)

I'm not asking for such a detail information. Just a few sentence or only a topic is pleasure enough

or you can talk about how anime and manga culture affect you and you society too

Like Karaoke ? or Pajinko (I dont think they have any Pajinko other than in Japan but I remember a toy resemble pajinko around when I was kid)

Especially in Western societies like America, Europe and Australia is my aim. I'm Thai so I have a close experience with Japanese cultures and how those affect my society and probably the same as all Asian countries but somehow I have little knowledge on the Western side.

I'm studying in Australia that's means more Western perspective surrounding me

This is an university report so any question is welcome as well. Give and take granted !!!

Thank you guys

It's Pachinko.

I don't know what this class is about, maybe it would help to explain what you're studying and why it relates to Japanese pop culture, but there's another thing about asking people on a message board for homework help.

And that is.........do your own homework.

Besides, people here might give you bullshit answers. You wanna trust that?

I'm well aware of that actually. But any information is worth to be honest. Not limit to this topic but every discussion topics here in this forum is huge source of data and would turn into good information in my report too. And sometime a funny comment can turn into boom !!! you know Well, it is the way to gather information from direct experience :sweatingbullets:

The unit is Japanese society and culture. Kinda laid back and easy going unit. So I dont worry much about it. It not even relate to my field of study coz it's my elective unit (I'm in business department). But I'm doing this on my own interest and if anything doing on your own interest it is a bit like taking in to another level so .

This weeks I learn that North Korea abduct Japanese people

You know... someone disappear from the society.....

And then A North Korean guy (a spy) become that someone who disappear instead ... stealing identities .....

Ninja is so great but North Korean is taking into further step !!!

In 2002 5 Japanese who actually got abducted by North Korean returned to Japan by the help of Japanese government !!!

19 cases are identify by Japanese government.

Interesting isnt it

Oh Wow. The obvious thing that comes to me as a American and the Kawaii culture is Pokemon. It is still going strong here and not just for the young.

Hello Kitty in America was also also very age limited in the past. It is only withing the last 10-15 years that it is being marketed to older girls14+ and women. In the past it was strictly for little girls 6-10. That change in age bias may be worth looking into and discussing...

I don't think that the Kawaii culture in America includes karaoke and certainly not pachinko. Most Americans are unfamiliar with pachinko. It isn't common in our casinos, so that is out. Karaoke... is harder to define. It's dead common here. Try any bar and they are likely to have it one or two nights a week. However, I wouldn't consider it part of the "cute culture".

Bento is gaining a lot of popularity in america over the last 5 years. It has been tied up in the health food movement and associated as a healthier way of eating and feeding your kids. That is a growing trend that has a origin in Japan. That might be worth perusing because it is definitely part of the "cute culture".

BTW Dude above? Why so negative? University students are taught to use all the resources available and your peers are resources. That is what I was taught as a undergrad and that what I teach my students! In sociology and cultural classes people are your most important resources! This guy has a unique opportunity to get some information and data that others might not have access too. These forums are suited to the questions he is asking because the subject directly links to this community. It smart of him to use the resources he has. Why bother answering if you are only going to be negative? He didn't ask for a map, just for a arrow. It is not like math. Just skip over it if it doesn't interest you.

I'm not a fan of hello kitty so I cannot answer to that question. I guess Japan has contributed a lot to society. Like Technology. Honda and Toyota are everywhere. Probably a lot of stuff too since they are pretty advance with technologies. Don't forget Robots!

Who would forget their cuisines right? I'm getting hungry just thinking about Sashima, Udon, Ramen, Shabu-Shabu, Tempura and more! Childhood Animes also left an impact to a child right? Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Gundams and so on that's why most adults still watch Anime. Anime and Manga are more like a form of art so they also contributed Arts to the society. Hey, I also heard that flower arrangement originated from Japan. You better look out for it cause I'm not totally sure.

This has been happening since the 80's. My sister used to teach English in Toyama on the Western coast of Japan where this was a constant concern. The reason is uncertain, some believe that they were trying to steal identities and place agents inside the country but that turned out not to be the case. Nobody in Japan knows why NK does what it does, but one thing is certain. The next "rocket" NK tries to launch the JSDF will shoot it down.

Shabushabu is western influence. The Japanese didn't eat beef before the Dutch arrived.

Thanks for all reply guys

Here is what I have in mind right now

Hello Kitty - history, popularity rise by mass media ?? Cute Cool Camp?? Consumer behavior and growth pattern

Critical comment on Hello Kitty, Mcdonald incident >>> more popularity for the cat?? Is it really cute for everyone ?? or even every fan ??

Manga to Anime where's light novel ?? How manga affect society Influence on kid teen adult?? Anime and Internet consumption Otaku??

Manga and Anime merchandise Yugioh?? < is card game follow anime or anime follow card game. Pokemon anime ??

Cuisine is too general in fact. I mean everyone know Chinese, Japanese or even Thai restaurant are everywhere these days. Even Vietnam food is rising in the market too. Indian is out of question, curry everywhere. Lot of Indonesian-Malaysian cuisine here in Perth. And in fact, Western food is sooo popular in my country. It's the effect of Globalisation.
