I don't think there was such thing as popularity in my school, everyone just knew everyone because we see each other all the time.....ironic considering how big my school was

It doesn't take much to be popular, which is why years from now, you'll look back and realize how stupid and pointless it really was.

^Yeah, f*** popularity. I tried my best to NOT be the center of any sort of attention at all during HS, and I did my best to be abnormal. I actually became known for that. Apparently I was pretty well-known in some circles and clubs, like the table tennis club (I was one of the self-taught players who could still play decently), herpetology club (my English class project that showed me handling wild rattlesnakes made people remember me), the track team, and the Wushu unit (I was immersed in martial arts at the time). I wasn't even an official member of any of them, I only visited when I felt like it and I was still pretty well-known. Can you say 'FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU?'

Popularity = attention
Attention = wtfwhydoyouwantthis

Some people have closet self worth issues. Gratuitous external sources of affirmation of one's self worth keeps some people operating normally. Without it they may be manic depressives or less than useful members of society. I don't disagree with you. I think that the idea of being popular probably isn't the end-all, be-all for a lot of folks but you can't say that it's not entirely without some value. Additionally, popularity as much as I hate it has a very VERY big presence in Corporate Business America. You go anywhere that files paperwork or deals day in and day out with some degree of bureaucratic red tape and favoritism in everything from raises to promotions and you'll find that popularity though it may be morally pathetic is the underlying glue upon which most businesses operate day to day activities.

As for me: I wanted to be popular, succeeded. Wanted more popularity and failed; miserably. Stopped wanting to be popular altogether and became notorious in my high school.

True, it's not entirely worthless, and can contribute to some fun years, as well as boost your confidence. You don't really have to work hard at being popular, you can become popular from being rich, or good-looking, or charismatic/funny, etc.

I was popular back in HS - now I no longer keep any sort of contact with those people. Looking back I didn't even LIKE most of them, most were just assholes. We just hung out together because we were "popular."

Well if you put it like that I can definitely see your point now. Though admittedly a lot of people who do want popularity generally don't fall in the qualifying categories you listed. It sorta explains their curiosity, they want a change of pace from anonymity and to feel important to someone somewhere. As for the hanging out with assholes because you had one thing that tied you all together. LOL, yeah I remember that. I did that too. I looked a bunch of those fellas up right before closing my FB and was pleased to see most of them are still trying to get by on glory long since passed into the setting sun. One guy literally has an entrepreneurial enterprise called: "How to be awesome at life." I figured well hey, whatever works... then I saw his client count: the guys he hung out with in high school and that's it. LMFAO.

I still try constantly.
But the difference is, I don't try desperately any more.
Also, it's no big deal if you're not popular. I keep telling myself that.

Trying to gain popularity is for yourself is just shallow, Just be yourself, Let your good qualities come out, with good motive, and you'll gain friends, whether they are good friends is up to you.

I never had to try. People flocked to me for some reason. Not saying I wanted them there in the first place though.

No. I have horrible social skills. I'm horribly blunt, and the words never come out the way I intend them too. Plus, it appears my sense of humour is rather out-dated. I can't laugh at half the things every one else seems to find hilarious.

I can't speak for extended periods. By extended, I mean try to make me talk for 10 seconds or more withour a prepared speech, I start stuttering like hell. Which means I'm horrible at recounting incidents I find amusing. Also, it seems my manner of speaking isn't quite the norm.
