Recently I have been thinking about the bath scenes in anime and I got to wondering why is it that the bath water is always green? Is it like bath salts or is it bad filtration but the water always seems green. Is it just me or is anyone else wondering why the water is always green?

I usually notice it as a blueish-green.

I personally think it's from soaps. In the typical color schemes of anime, I think it's pretty accurate color for bath water.

I see lots of colors for bathwater. Some are the same as the tub, some are blue or gray. And some are green too.

MAYBE it's because green is a warmer color than blue? Usually water is colored blue in anime, but blue is a cold color. Would you want to bathe in blue-looking water? If you make it green (add a little yellow) it looks a lot less chilly.

I think it's just for the aesthetics of the anime. I doubt Japanese bathwater is really that color.

I got an idea and did a search on Japanese hot springs. The water in hot springs often has a bluish or greenish tint due to natural stuff that grows in it (either bacteria, algae, or both, I don't remember). So there might also be an association of THAT color to nice, warm hot springs.

I suspect it indeed could be something like this.

As Japanese bathing is less about cleansing (given that you scrub and shower before getting in) and more about relaxing and soaking, it makes sense that the use of bath salts or other additives would be common. Indeed the responses here indicate that is true.

After watching the 3 seasons of Hidamari Sketch, I'd think it's bath salts most of the time. You'd get characters bathing in all the colours of the rainbow water, of course showing the bath salts dropping in the bath first.

<- has decided to buy this.

and on a side note: After deep thought and meditation I realized it probably is bath salts, and or similar substances. I appreciate your feedback.
and on a side note to my side note: After deep thought and meditation I also realized I need to take more nice long relaxing baths.

Bath salts can change the color of the water but I think they change the color so oyou cant see them under the water.
