I'm in the exact same boat I feel your pain

I kept it on the down low for a while too, scared of being judged by people in high school. But the more I got into it as a hobby, the less I started to care. If you like something so much, then who cares what anyone else thinks? Hobbies are not usually a judge of character! I know what you mean about finding others who like it just as much as you do- it's tricky! That's why I joined CR ^_^

I have a friend almost as into anime as me, some that accept it and might watch some, some who don't but accept it as part of who I am. I may not have many friends in real life but the ones I have are all great.

No, I'm proud to display I'm still into anime... even though it is more directed towards teenagers.

I was laughed at by my business partners for logging onto CR through a public library computer. Hmph! They just don't know what fun they're missing!

You got laughed at by business partners? They should act more mature around others' interests. Anyway, I don't openly shout that I love anime after an incident similar but I do talk about it to others sometimes if they are interested in listening. Of course, I listen to their stories and thoughts on the matters and hobbies they want to share with others as well. The similar incident was when I was eating porridge for the first time and I loudly exclaimed that I loved it but instead of saying porridge I said porn. Not making that mistake again

nah, anyone close to me is fully aware of my affinity for anime.

sure, you'll get taunted, but don't let that dictate what you enjoy.

I see no reason why to hide it. :\ Even though it's practically worshiped where I live, I don't think a lot of people know I even like anime because it doesn't come up in conversations ever.

If the subject comes up I won't hide it, but I don't volunteer the information to acquaintances. My friends know I like anime and they're the ones that count. I've actually gotten a few of my friends interested in anime. My boyfriend used to be totally against anime believing it to be dorky, but I got him into FMA. So much, in fact, that he now drives me nuts with it since he watches it over and over!

I'm afraid to open up about being an anime fan...

I have a deep loathing for rejection.

Well, it depends on who you ask. If you asked any of my coworkers "Is George an anime fan?" they'd tell you "I seriously doubt it but I have no idea"; if you asked my classmates, they'd say "A little"; and if you asked any of my friends, they'd say "He is an insane otaku who lives and breathes that crazy Japanese shit". So yes and no. Mainly yes, but it isn't because I'm ashamed or anything of that sort, it's simply something that doesn't come up unless I'm the one to initiate conversation about it, which only happens around my friends. Granted, there are in fact times when I'll play coy about it if I'm around a girl that I like and I don't know her well enough to know if she will judge me by it, and granted, I wouldn't be with someone so moronic and shallow, but it'd be nice to get a screw in before revealing that fact.

There was definitely a time when I was afraid to let people know how much I was into anime. But I think with age I've been able to get over my insecurities and now I tell would-be-antagonizers to piss off.

Now I'm faced with the problem that my friends who do like anime only watch Naruto and Bleach. I have nothing against those shows, to each their own, but I'm not really interested in talking about them. I guess that's why I joined crunchyroll, I need another outlet for my fandom. Got to love the internet.

I never outright tell anyone, but it's not hard to find out if someone wants to know. I had roommates (there were four others besides me), two of which also watched anime/read manga, and the other two always complained that we never sat in the living room with them and felt like we were ignoring them. They also said they felt weird walking into the room we were watching our shows in (we would try to be considerate and allow them the living room to bring other friends and such without having the TV noise) and that they wished we would stop. In turn we sat down in the living room doing homework for two weeks (we were trying to be more social for them because they said they would like to just talk) for short periods of time and they sat in their rooms the whole time. So we just went back to staying in our room and watching DBZ (one of our roommates started with Bleach and hadn't even ventured back to the older series so my other roommate and I decided that we had to remedy that) and didn't even try to listen to them anymore when it came to our anime stuff. I think it was at that point that I stopped caring as much about if people found out because if they didn't want it around them then I didn't want them around me. So it's not hard to find out since I'll just watch it or read, I don't advertise but if someone brings it up I'll talk.

For years I was a closet bisexual, closet atheist and a closet anime fan... Now I'm proud of it all - my sexual orientation, my lack of faith and my love for anime...
