Sounds like you have a language problem. It's entirely possible to learn a language simply by hearing it repeatedly it's called total immersion learning, Google in fact has a new app targeted at doing just that, Rosetta Stone works on the same principal.

As for myself I've learned about 50-100 words from watching Anime for the last 18 years or so. I still have trouble with the reversed grammar and certain connective words like "I', "is", "and" things like that but I know a great many specific words to the point I recognize when translators are taking liberties with their translations to make things sound more interesting or more american.

An adult who has watched anime for 18 years. That's what I like to see, rather than bullshitting young adults or teenagers saying that they've picked it up by watching their favourite series.

I've been watching anime for 12 years, and that enough to get you the basics. Sure, I don't know the correct grammar, or how to read or write japanese, but it's enough for me to understand and talk.

I've been watching Anime for close to 17 years now, I'm not fluent but I know enough not to embarrass myself if I ever go to Japan, as for reading... still got a long way to go. I know some kanji (maybe 50 characters in total) and am still figuring out katakana and hiragana. I think about 10 years ago though I took a more active approach, started reading from dictionaries and looking for words to translate.

However all this is only true for Tokyo dialect, stick me in Kyoto or Hiroshima and I'd probably have a hard time figuring it out...
