When you watch a specific type of anime, what do you look for in it? Do you look for a favorite genre or maybe likable characters? Do you enjoy passionate relationships or quick moving action? Do you enjoy beautifully done artwork and songs in anime?
Or do you just enjoy fanservice?

I know there are people out there who think like me when it comes to anime and appreciate the originality of the manga writers' and anime writers' thoughts being turned into either pieces of art or into something awesome and maybe comedic or maybe naughty...

Please feel free to share your thoughts!

Favorite? I don't have favorites, I prefer to watch broad genres of anime. As for likeable characters. Hmmm. Don't really know. I guess I don't have a favorite type of character either. For me, I just take enjoyment in the fact that I'm watching what I like. Sometimes keeping with the originality of the manga/anime/etc. (provided there is one) and trying to adapt that into another media form can be quite a challenge sometimes. Some series that divulge from the original manifestation can turn out to be quite good or quite bad, either way I'd still give them an A for effort.

Also, I would make sure and see if this thread is not a duplicate (just sayin').

No duplicates... I did check. I am asking why because I am curious to what makes people click... clique, I know, but I always have questions to ask and might find people who see anime the way I do. I love all kinds of anime and I prefer to find something original in the sense of the manga or as in a work of art created separately.

When it comes to mystery, I love yokai and traditional storytelling such as in Mushishi and Natsumi Yujin-cho. However, I find adventure and mystery exciting and can't stop watching series when I come across them!

I love a good romance, even when it's clique and cheesy. I just want something rewarding out of the anime.
IN the end that's what I look for... a good laugh, a smile, excitement, or even tears and my chest hurting... I get emotional, but it's anime. I love how spread out the world of anime is.

Asking questions is a good habit. Yeah the world of anime is spread out which is what makes it enjoyable. By the way Monster is a great series to watch for suspenseful types, at least I think so. Not saying anyone should watch it or anything, just a consideration.

For me, the only genre of anime I don't watch that often is romance. That's because it's usually cheesy or gets kinda boring in my opinion. I mainly stick to:

Action: Bleach, Naruto, etc.
Supernatural: D. Gray man, Natsume Yujin-cho
Drama/action/mecha: Code Geass and most of the Gundam series
Odd titles: Tsuritama, it has bright colorful art that has a quirky musical score to match its odd storyline.
Comedy: Gintama, one of the weirdest shows I've ever watched, but also one of the funniest
Yaoi/yuri: I know people tend to be kinda divided on this one, but I happen to like both. I mostly watch the ones that are funny and have some type of suspense in them.
Historical: Hakouki Shinsengumi Kitan, I'm a sucker for hot anime dudes, but this show doesn't have only that. Aside from the whole demonic aspect the show introduces later, it's pretty good with a storyline that you can get into and likable characters. I also like that the heroine actually does try and help out instead of being totally dependent on them all the time.

And other genres that I've likely forgotten to mention because I'm a spazz.

But all in all, I watch different anime not really based on genre, even if it is romantic I will at least try out an episode of two before giving up on it. I tend to see if it's a story I can get into or if I like the characters of the music just hypnotizes me into watch the show.

I like slice of life! It has this realism that makes you relate to the characters. Although I like to think I have diverse tastes, I mean I'm not limited to only kind because there are some anime with good plots regardless of the genres. I'm pretty sure I tried at least one kind of anime in each genre.

I have very broad tastes. I enjoy most genres, but if I had to pick favorites, I would say that mine are as follows:

Mystery - Though I don't usually care if the mysteries are that "good" since I have rarely found shows that are not predictable in any medium. (The ones that pack a good twist usually end up being among my favorites...)
Slice-of-life - Character driven stories usually have an impact.
Historical fiction/fantasy - Things that take place in earlier eras or fantasy settings of earlier eras
Sci-Fi/fantasy Action/Mecha - I have always loved science fiction and fantasy and these type of anime are really fun
Comedy - I like some broad comedy, but I prefer it to be mixed with other stuff, like say, Sci-Fi/Fantasy Action/Mecha - or -
Romantic Comedy - Not that I don't like romantic drama too, but romantic comedy is really my absolute favorite genre.

But my favorite shows actually combine two or more of these genres, such as:
Mysterious Girlfriend X - Slice-of-life Sci-Fi Mystery Romantic Comedy (though the mystery aspect is all Urabe, not any type of mystery to solve... She is totally unsolvable! LOL!)
Ah! My Goddess - Romantic Comedy Slice-of-life with occasional sci-fi/fantasy action
Spice and Wolf - Historical Fantasy Romantic Comedy
Gosick - Historical Fiction Mystery Romantic Comedy
Steins;Gate - Sci-Fi Romantic Comedy with a nice mystery element (I love time travel stories!!!)
Toradora! - Slice-of-life Romantic Comedy
Zakuro - Slice-of-life Historical Fantasy Action Romantic Comedy with a touch of mystery - practically the whole package, except the mecha... for that there is:
Full Metal Panic - The best blend of Sci-Fi/Mecha action and Romantic Comedy I have found!

You will note that the recurring theme here is the romantic comedy part. That is definitely my go-to genre. I am, basically, a huge sap when it comes to romantic stories!

I personally like comedy and action.

Because its anime, and therefore animated (duh) the laws of the universe that reality follows is not true in anime. Someone in the real world getting hit by a hammer in the head is brain damage or death. Someone in anime getting hit by a hammer in the head bleeds profusely (and awkwardly) and starts yelling at the character who hit them. Now this isnt true for all anime of course, some are really like reality, but because its a cartoon peoples minds can go wild, and have fun, which makes the comedy a different take and makes it better in most cases

I also like action for generally the same reasons. Its anime, I want to see things that are not supposed to happen. Sure we have sci-fi for "reality" but anime is just more ridiculous (although sometimes too ridiculous) and that is what i want to see. I want to see giant explosions and what not that would never happen in real life. I want to see kids with superpowers fighting cause anime can truly bring out the potential for that

Anyway my argument can be denied or validated for other genres too, but i like these the best

You just gotta be open minded. I look more towards the reviews rather than the genre. Even though I tend to stay away from ecchi and slice of life anime, if theres a good one airing, then I'll watch it. ^^

I'm fond of most all genres.

Though personal favorites are sci-fi, slice-of-life and horror/supernatural.
