I know we members don't get votes for these contests, but I thought I'd give an honorable mention to Hualani for "Mira Mira" (page 6). Out of all the stories in the thread, I enjoyed that one the most.
Also, I was totally fooled by Victoria's opening post! It suggested that all of the top 5 entrants would win prizes. Perhaps my caffeine hadn't kicked in yet when I read it. |

I didn't really have an answer so I kind of just brushed it off. "20,19,18" The entire class was synced as their last breathes drew near. I began to look outside. A slight bit of worry arose when I saw emptiness throughout the neighborhood. Not a car or person could be seen on the street. I felt an eerie chill freeze my body. "10,9,8" A gut wrenching sensation instilled a fear in me that I could not shake. My senses told me something was wrong and it was too late to do anything about it. "3,2,1" James was the first to step towards the door. My vocal cords tried to form the words "stop" or "wait" but I was interrupted by the gruesome sight in front of me. The rest of James' body had continued on a short stroll despite the fact his head had been torn from his shoulders. A large black demonic figure with piercing red eyes now stood with a severed head clasped in one of its claws. James' eyes and mouth still twitched as though his soul was trapped in his skull. The entire world seemed to be at a stalemate for all of three seconds. A blood soaked pandemonium followed the calm and brief intermission as the black figure stepped closer and closer.

and ran towards me.
I cried as she hugged and kissed me. My heart felt like it was about to burst. Immediately I felt a sharp pain in my chest. I pulled back and saw a knife. I now cried because of the pain. I fell to the floor and saw her lean closer to me. She whispered “we will always be together” and with that she slashed her own throat and fell beside me. My strength faded, the last thing I saw was her blood soaked ribbon.

The teacher suddenly drop on the floor. Everyone looks at her body. All we see are the neck scars left by strangulation and the protruding bones on her neck that looks like a painfully twisted spine. I hear a scratch from the blackboard. It was her.
I follow her into the janitor’s office. The door locked. I gulp. A tall black entity with no eyes with eight legs and arms stares at me and slowly makes its way to me. I could not scream. I could not run. I am chased by this entity!
I woke up feeling I was in a different place. I see her with the dark entity with its eight eyes with excitement in both their eyes. I scream and nothing comes out of my mouth. Damn.

Victoria had heard whispers of the rumor when she entered high school but disregarded it as idle chatter.
However, in the spring of her junior year, the captain of the tennis team, Michana, Victoria's close friend, accidentally fell onto Mr. Shinji and stared into his eyes for 5 seconds. Later that week, after Michana had won her tennis match, she came down with a severe cold and was forced to stay home for the rest of the semester.
Determined to find out the truth, Victoria looked for Mr. Shinji. When she found him, she stared into his eyes and counted, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. A grin spread across Mr. Shinji's face, and in a flash, Victoria thought she saw a cute white cat...thing...with red eyes.
Horror filled Victoria's eyes as she finally understood. Mr. Shinji was actually Kyuubey.
Also, here is xxliew's entry, which didn't quite follow the rules and thus couldn't win, but got an honorable mention.

She stares at the red smear on the grass. Her vision blurs. Her eyeball shakes, squelching about in her eye socket, and finally rips itself out.
Plop.
The sclera is dark, mottled - a blob of black jelly. The optic nerve flicks about in the puddle of blood. Like it’s trying to swim. She realizes that it’s not her eyeball - not anymore.
Her other eyeball begins to tremble.

and I thought readers would assume that the little girl was a student too, because of her comment "Just another student," implying that she's a student herself and that the little boy looks like a student.
But congrats to the winners nonetheless! And also thanks, bah, for collecting the winning stories. |

I love how CUTE this story was, while still able to be horrifying, xxliew didn't have to rely on the usual scary story troupes to add darkness to her short tail about a corpse who just wanted to play with the tadpoles ~ I imagined the boy to be so CUTE TOO.
