Cigarettes are a stimulant, the same as coffee. The initial calming feeling you get when you have a smoke isn't due to the effects of the ciggie, it's due to your brain getting it's fix. On the flip side, when you are smoking your breathing is more controlled which helps with anxiety.

There is no cure for anxiety and there never will be (it's a required function for us to continue to exist) but it is manageable though things like CBT so go see your doctor and get stuck into courses that'll teach you methods to cope with the anxiety that doesn't involve shoving a ton of chemicals into your lungs.

I do smoke, have done for years even after health problems with my lungs (including operations on my lungs) but ex-smokers are the worst, they are all "ohh I hate smoke now, can't stand it, you should give up like me" etc. so I smoke just to annoy them.

I do it for relaxation of nerves among other things + pretty much addicted to it.

What is CBT? do I have to go to a doctor to get put in these magical "courses"? lol

I have had anxiety for my entire life and it has always been "see a shrink" or "take a pill" so I am pretty psyched to hear about something else.

As for smoking itself, I wouldn't recommend starting but I think you should have every right to make bad decisions if you want to.

I don't smoke and detest if a smoker smokes in my face. That is annoying. Apart from that, if a get a girlfriend who smokes then she must do so outside and wash her hands afterwards to get rid of the smell.

So yeah, a bit particular. Also hate the fact most smokers can't smell their own stench. But most of my friends smoke so I can't really complain much. Once I drink a couple the smell disappears.

I don't smoke, and if it were up to me smoking in any public place would be banned. To my mind it's selfish as other people have to breathe in second hand smoke, which (regardless of possible health effects) is disgusting.

If someone chooses to smoke in the comfort of their own home, however, my view is that it's their decision, and their lungs that are being damaged, so I don't go as far as some people and say it should be banned completely.

Thank god it's not up to you.

Do you dress up in Nazi uniforms and masturbate to the idea of a fascist state as well?

Considering most places don't even allow you to smoke indoors anymore you can just walk around them or ignore them.

EvilBunnyFluff

You did say you smoke even after problems with your lungs, how was I to know they were unrelated? Sounded like a typical COPD patient who still smokes.

True, I could have made it clearer before-hand that my lung operations were not related to smoking but that wasn't the point of my umm, point, the point was that even after a health problem affecting my lungs I continued to smoke... Probably to piss off my physioterrorist, after the pleurectomy and stapling of the bulae (and later a chemical pleurodesis, which hurts btw) I had to exercise on an exercise bike, the terrorist ramped the difficulty up just to make me suffer, evil woman.

I don't lecture smokers. They know cigarettes are bad. But I will raise a shit fit if someone smokes on me who knows how I feel, and I have.

Well yes, that's just rude, generally I tend not to stand on people when I smoke

No, I don't go to bars or places where they allowed indoors because obviously I would have to smell them and it's disgusting. After you quit, they smell 10,000 times worse. It's like 6 steps below rancid corpse.

Over here it's illegal to smoke in an enclosed public space, which includes bars, bus shelters, under an umbrella (ok, that last ones a lie but that word looks nice) so the problem then became that we have pubs which are several hundred years old, or newer ones from the 19th century that have decades of smoke pollution on their walls, furniture and such, get rid of the smell of ciggies and you end up having the smell of stale beer, or the guy standing next to you who hasn't showered in 3 months because it takes him away from his whiskey!

Everyone chooses their death everyday, cigarettes are just a really really lame thing to want to die for. You could argue that you get excitement and fun out of motorbiking; cigarettes giving you joy is just an illusion.

I could argue that I use a motorbike for transport, in the UK, you know about our weather patterns right? Not much fun to be had in riding a motorbike when it's pouring with rain, cold and your helmet steams up so you can't see a thing, open your visor and the rain soaks your glasses so you can see even less, okay, maybe that is exciting in a "hell yeah, lemme see if I can avoid them rainbow indicators that I can't see.... wheeeeeeee" kind of way.

I don't smoke out of joy, I smoke because I'm addicted, quitting the addiction itself is easy, it's quitting the habits you pick up from smoking that's a pain in the neck, sitting down at the computer, get a coffee and boom, you habitually reach for a smoke, settle down to watch Top Gear, habit dictates you reach for a smoke, it's that stupid habit that makes quitting smoking an annoyance, so I gave up giving up

I've got asthma, and while it would be possible for me to smoke it would be more trouble than its worth.

The main reason for a person NOT to start smoking is the cost. At about 5$ a pack, think of all the cool stuff you could buy with that!
If your fine with paying that its your money so go on with your bad self.
and yeah, blah blah blah smoking is bad for you blah blah but we all will die eventually. When its your time, its your time. So do what you want but do it knowing your consequenses and dont regret it.

i dont smoke my opinion on it is its fine if you do it but i just dont like the people that smoke it for no aparent reason at all like they do it just to look kool. if your the type of person thats stressed all the time then go for it. my ex girlfriend smokes like shes been doing it for years although she stoped because i told her that i dont like but we broke up so she has continued to do it. also if you have any condition that smoking may make more severe than you should stay away as much as possible
