Have there been times where anime was ESSENTIAL to your getting through the day?

The idea here is to smack stereotypes of anime nerds in the face using insight on WHY we like anime so much and make us feel good.

I know this will raise eyebrows but I'm going to be BOLD anyway.

To start off, my only source of transportation was always ill, fear of driving, the former taking you away from your own friends and being lucky to see them on weekends 5 times a year, asthmatic and living with an intimidating mother made me do what no one would EVER do, I fell in love with an anime character who was a child in a Platonic fashion, as since 2000, (there was a short break from 2001-2003) Sakura Kinomoto-dono (the "dono" confirms it) from Cardcaptor Sakura has served as an emotional life support system during the would be lethal grade school years of being forced away from friends. So literally I could not live without her, and the reasons above heavily imply that games and anime were all I had for absurd amounts of time (calling friends was not enough, I needed to see them).
THIS is how much I owe and appreciate Sakura-dono for supporting me.

There are times when anime improves my mood. And times when I've been annoyed at not being able to catch a show on time. But no, it's never essential.

Anime specifically... no, but I can understand the sentiment. A long time ago, there was a time when the Simpsons got me through a very rough patch. Sometimes you just need something entertaining to help you escape while you mentally regroup.

Yeah. I don't like to watch dramas and I don't have TV to watch, usually (otherwise I'd be watching documentaries and cooking shows and Mythbusters), so I watch anime so I don't think too much.

I am going to be dramatic here...

Anime can really help me get through the day when I've had a terrible day that I feel that I want to inflict damage onto myself but when I watch it, I calm down and think clearly.
Anime can sometimes be essential because it improves my mood for the rest of the day. It just influences me when i want to get away from reality.
Reality can sometimes be very painful that indeed I end up getting by with the precious creation of Anime that I can only think has saved my life. It is one of the reasons why I live. With life having been harsh at times, getting through the day is difficult without something that can help you released all the tensions and pressure.

Anime, though it can offer escapist relief, I don't rely on too much. However, posting witticisms as well as nit-witticisms on these boards is very similar to putting anecdotal or true feeling entries in a journal. At times I find THAT more edifying than watching good anime.

Years ago when I sought counseling for overbearing mother issues as well as failed relationship issues my therapist continually suggested I take up writing in a private journal aka private diary. Initially I always felt that advice to be crap and instead relied too much on my own self-generated rationale to see me through stress. To my amazement journal-ling works! I should've listened to my counselor back then. She had some terrific ideas but journal-ling was 1 of her best.

A day is a little too much, maybe a tiring week. Animes usually improve my mood unless what I've watched was a crappy one.

I use to reward myself with an anime episode every time i finished an assignment for a class. It made the homework seem longer, but i could enjoy my nights since i had no more homework or things to watch

I found some in my community!

The humor
The background cultural folklore
The kindness and ideals of the good characters(wish real life had people like them)
Trying to predict the outcome.
The recurring characters types that appear in other animes
The inspirational messages.
The entertainment.
