This masterpiece has been praised left and right by critics, fans of the first series, and the general public.
Popular anime sites such as MyAnimeList, AnimeNewsNetwork, Anime-Planet and AniDB have this as their number 1.

My question is, did these sites lie?
Did the people who rated it a 10 lie?

And if it's not the best shounen anime, then what is?
One Piece is my favorite anime of all time and even I won't go as far as naming it the best.
Brotherhood is just that great.

And to people who haven't fully watched it yet, what do you think of the popularity of FMA: Brotherhood?
Over hyped? Overrated? Or does it deserve the popularity and praise it's getting?
If so, do you plan on seeing it in the future?

Discuss.

Having 64 episodes is its greatest strength; long enough to enjoy but quick enough to never be bored.

Well,to me:When calling something the best,I'm referring to it's quality. So,I try to be as objective as possible when it comes to this.
Is the animation fitting & done well?Does it have a fitting soundtrack that provides the feel? Are the characters believable & well developed? How good is the plot of the series?Any inconstencies or plotholes in the writing? And do the actors provide the needed emotions (In my case,do the Funimation actors since I never heard the original audio).
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood does pass ALL this questions adequately. No problems with anything it offers me.I say it's the most well written & best shounen anime I've ever seen. But,it's not a 100% masterpiece (that goes to the Berserk manga),nor is it my favorite (that goes to One Piece).
So,all the praise it receives is well deserved & the original manga-ka earned all her awards she received.

Just for clarification's sake, Berserk is Seinen.

Now then, to get Berserk completely out of the way, Miura is sure dragging his ass. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed Berserk ever since the nightmarish sea adventure which never seems to end. To top it off wasn't this determining best Shounen anime ever made not manga?

Anyway I wouldn't consider Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood the best Shounen anime ever made. Although I think it is a great anime overall and made by my favorite animation studio, BONES I have to give the title to an original concept by BONES. Whether you know the expected answer or not, I would say Kōkyōshihen Eureka SeveN is the best Shounen anime ever made.
I thoroughly enjoy the series and find it quite marveling the level of care and attention to detail present. The plot may be too slow for some, however, its character development is unrivaled. It has all the elements of deeper thought with each episode having its own theme and lessons adding together to create a truly immersive world and grand experience.

It's the best one ever made because
Awesome likeable characters (Envy FTW!!!!)
You get attached to almost all of them
The series isn't dragged out
No shitty character power-ups
No training arcs
At least IIRC, there're no plot holes
The animation for the fights are fantastic

And @kufirst I really can't get into Eureka Seven, there's too much angst in the series.
Does it get better later on? What's so good about Eureka 7?

I don't know about it being the best, but I would definitely say it's one of the best, along with the likes of Eureka 7. It's certainly a lot more thoughtful than a lot of shounen; even though I enjoy Naruto et al I can't put them on the same level as FMA.

The one weakness IMO is that the first part of the series felt a bit rushed, presumably because they were covering the part of the manga that had already been adapted in the first FMA anime and wanted to get to the part that hadn't been adapted as soon as possible.

Please, don't.

Renton is one of the worst ever. I can't remember the last time I saw an anime with someone that dense, so socially inapt, so incapable of empathy, indecisive and weak. I actually got so fed up with him that I stopped watching the anime halfway in or so.

Only good thing with Eureka seven was the soundtrack.

I think the hi-light of the last episode I saw was about goddamn make-up.

The only negative thing you could call Edward, would be that he is somewhat shy against his love interest. When you compare Renton with Edward, it would be like comparing a spineless slime-creature with a human who has actually met setbacks and tragedies, which helped forge him into a stronger being.

I have a problem with people who say that some series is the best. It's all just a matter of opinions.
I think FMA is a great shonen series. The story was well organized, the build up to the finale was well done and the characters are great. I kinda wanted it to be a little longer, 10 more chapters or so.
It is not my favorite series, my favorite series is One Piece, but FMA is definitely one of my favorites.

I don't think it's overrated at all.

If you've always hated your English or literature class, you might want to stop reading now. ;)

Not only is this show entertaining, it has great characters, and it tells a good story. But, the main reason this ends up on my masterpiece list is that FMA:B has many layers. If you want to dig below the surface, there's a lot of thought provoking material. Over and over again, you'll find themes that are repeated and explored from many different angles. Take the titular theme of Brotherhood. It's explored in many ways: through the brothers Elric, the brotherhood of the homunculi, the brotherhood of the military, and the brotherhood of the opposition to the Father's plan. Other themes include sin, fatherhood, duty, healing, war, evolution, knowledge... I can go on, but I'll stop here.

While some shows/manga may explore a few of those themes, they usually only do so superficially. FMA:B is rare in its scope. It really is amazing that something this complex didn't collapse under it's own weight. It's entirely due to the skill of Arakawa's writing that it doesn't. That's probably the main reason why the first adaptation failed: the director tried to tinker with Arakawa's themes and ended up with a muddled mess by the end of the show.
