Who really gives a dam?
In 5 years no one will remember their names and the only people who will are the fans who belong in one big sheep flock who have finally understood the difference between music and noise (having moved on to bands producing real music like The Foo Fighters and Metallica)

Now, now. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not 'real' music.
What is subjectivity?

They're popular because they're manufactured to appeal to vocal teenage girls; pretty much what their entire fanbase consists of. They're cute and have catchy songs - not much else to their popularity, to be quite honest.

Sorry ... I can at times get carried away with such topics, this is simply because im fed up of seeing boybands and other people simply not giving the music that im passionate about a chance because of stero types and misunderstandings.
But I am entitled to my opinion, I was simply adding it to the debate and answering the question from my point of view. Subjectivity is your interpritation of something.
If ive caused offense, I am sorry!
One could argue that it is good music, but they cannot deny that its most definatly over produced to some extent.

I am a 15 year old teenage girl. I am the target market, but they dont appeal to me? Hmmm, I must be abnormal. Or maybe I just have individualism. Its a terrible affliction, I know.
But I do agree with your points on their popularity, there really isnt much more to them than the 'aesthetic appeal' and the appart catchy songs. Meanwhile I have freinds who adore 1d, I don't know Ive listed to heavy metal and hard rock for years, people who listin to the music I do generally have the attitudes towards boybands as I do.
Sorry ^_^
Now I feel sheepish -_- (pun wasnt intended ... sorry XD)

Tsk tsk! Don't hate so much on boy bands! The Beatles were essentially a boy band.

But to be honest, the music you're into is a lot more popular than what you think. Not that many people listen to chart music as compared to every other genre out there. Like you said, bands like Metallica are pretty much legendary. Mainstream 'musicians' have their popularity die down after a few years.

But seriously, people do have different tastes and some people prefer to listen to easy, cheerful pop music without caring about any deeper meaning to the songs. Of course there's a difference in quality, but how much people enjoy certain music is still personal preference.
There's not really such a thing as bad taste or good taste in music.

Awhhh man sorry if I came across as arogant!
Ohhh yeah love a bit of the beatles! (Hey Jude :D) By reference to boybands I mean ones of recent origins As per example The wanted.
Hmm yeah I guess so, it's just frustrating when so many of my freinds throw EVERYTHING that I suggest back in my face without even listing to it. I mean I know I can be niave, but seriously I have listened to 1D songs multiple times in order to justify my argument.
Seem's like I have a lot to learn still, maybe its gotten to my head? haha :')
Thanks for your advice, ill try to put this into practise in real life.

Awww you didn't come across as being arrogant at all!
Glad to know you're a fan of the Beatles. Yeah, I know what you mean, though. That's why I said that music obviously varies in quality - of course real musicians are going to make better music than a few boys who were put together just because they're pretty.

Don't get frustrated at your friends! It's their loss if they're missing out on some good music!
I don't think I've EVER had a civil conversation on this topic. Usually people get angry and defensive.
You sure are a cool 15 year old. :')

I'm glad I didnt come across badly! I just reread my comment and thought, jeez that was so rude! :P
I like the beatles because my dad brainwashed me when I was like 7! haha(yes he succeeded!)
At least we both listin to musicians of high talent ... also ADORE like film scores ect (I know Heavy metal and classical stuff, it doesnt work ... I think im mad! xD) ... you'll know Yoko Kanno of course! (love her)
I guess I just get frustrated at my freinds because they just reject anything and everything I suggest. I mean pretty much with all my freinds they all like the same mainstream things and I have almost nothing in common with them. I even suggest them a teenage girls movie which is awesome (*coughs* 10 things I hate about you) and just totally throw it back. And then when someone else recommends it they're like ... ohhh I might watch that. Hence frustration. But yeah, their loss ... but I can always brain wash my little brother muahahahaa
To be honest ive never had a civil conversation about music either! Hmmm, well im just pretty laid back as a person ... I keep myself to myself, if someones gunna disagree with me then its fine. I know whos right!
Thank you! Your pretty cool yourself.

You're lucky that you had your dad influence your taste in music and that you started early. I only had the internet to help me D:
It's not mad at all, film scores are great! I love Yoko Kanno, but I think John Williams has the most impressive discography. Maybe because I love Star Wars and Jurassic Park, though.

WHAT? Why would your friends refuse to watch films? You did tell them it had Heath Ledger in it...right? Heath Ledger? And they still said no? I would say that you might need some new friends! Just kidding :')

Yes! That's the right attitude to have. Just keep knowing that you're right and everything will be fine.

Aw, thanks!

Infact your still lucky, because the internet is very useful for finding new bands!! It's amazing!!!!!
Holy cricket!! (Hahahaaa, sorry that's a line from Harry potter) I LOVE JOHN WILLIAMS!!! he is unbelievable, I adore star wars and JP! but I have to say Hans Zimmer is prince of the movie soundtracks (love that guy soo much) and of course Howard shore (LOrd of the rings fan girl ekk)
I'm a total movie buff, my freinds are like .... Meh we will watch a list of 5 movies and that's all!
Heath ledger!!!!!!!! <3 my heart broke when he died, such admiration for him ... His performance in the dark knight was phenomenal. And hes very nice to look at took. Love old Heath ledger, a knights tale and 10 things rock!
Your kidding? I'm always right
I feel bad now because this Convo is not answering the threads question!! Heh heh, might message you instead!

I don't get it meself. They're not my type of music so I wouldn't really, but I don't how they got so popular when there has been other boybands like them in UK before who never got the smae attention overseas, JLS for example.

Because girls love boy bands with flippy hair. I don't know. I personally don't like One Direction, but I don't have a problem with people that do. ^_^

- Gorgeous looking guys
- They sing well
- Simon Cowell praised them heavily when they were on the X-Factor so I guess people took that into consideration? Not too sure but its a theory.
