I've never seen the series, and would love to get into it. I've heard nothing but great things about it.

How does it work? What's the difference between the 85-episode series seen on Netflix, and the three 50 episode series on Hulu? Robotech: The Macross Saga is just the name of the dubbed version of The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, right? I may sound like an idiot, but is Robotech just the dub name for Macross?

Robotech is actually 3 different Japanese series that were subject to the usual editing for the U.S., but with the added twist of additional edits to make it appear the 3 series were related.

Wikipedia does a good job of providing the information on what Robotech actually consists of:

Thanks for your reply. The thing that was confusing to me is whether the Robotech series affected the continuity of further Macross series. I see that there are further Robotech movies, and further Macross series. How, exactly, do they relate?

Robotech was one of the earlier anime I watched but sadly it is a bit of a mess, a prime example of what happens when you try to do more than just translate something. In this case they tried to weave together a lot of stuff from many places into one story. It worked pretty well but has nothing really to do with Macross and the follow on Macross movies are not part of Robotech and were not weaved back into the story. Instead Robotech continued in other directions like the comics ending with Robotech: Mordecai and then some more attempts at anime revivals.

Just watch them and enjoy them and try not to think about the original works or too hard about continuity.

Just watch Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada, and Super Dimension Calvary Southern Cross, and forget that Robotech existed and then we can all forget the horrors of bad American dubbing and editing that existed thanks to one Carl Macek, a terrorist who surely burning in hell for the hatchet jobs he did on anime and the consistent screwing over he did of fans by refusing to release unedited subtitled versions of the shows that he licensed.

Oh, and Rick Hunter doesn't exist.

*sits back and waits for the Robotech fanboys to come at me*

Yes, Robotech is a English Localization of Macross but Season 2 & 3(Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and MOSPEADA respectively) are not related to the Macross continuity.

Harmony Gold somehow weaved all 3 unrelated anime to a 3 season TV series. There is supposed to be a 4th Season(Robotech II: The Sentinels) but it was canceled after the 3rd episode.

The rest of the continuity are found in American comic books.

The Macross movies (or rather OVAs), Macross II and Macross Plus have nothing to do with Robotech. These are readily available in the United States. You can currently find it on Netflix and Hulu, and likely other legal sources. I doubt, however, that you'll find a legal subbed version online.

By contrast, anything related to Macross 7 remains unlicensed in the United States.

The one Robotech movie I know of, Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles, is pure Robotech. It was created from the ground up, but building on the mashup of the three separate series that were Robotech. You can find it on Netflix and Hulu, among others. If you found a "subbed" version of this online, it would be a hoot as this was an English language production. There were plans for further films, but as far as I know, they never even reached production.
