Like the thread title says, how come some people don't like fansubs?

some fansubbers are doing horrible, not saying all.
I've seen a lot of misspelled words and wrong translations
and some have the most horrible timing ever.
But they're free so meh.
imo.

Yeah, there was this one sub of Moretsu Pirates where they misspelled Bentenmaru and Bicentennial for half the episode.
No, wait, that Crunchyroll.

Don't care, as long as I get my anime.
I try to stay away from them though. That's why I'm a member on CR.

Basically this. I consider myself a fan, and wish to support the industry I care about. Something with more fans but less customers may as well be getting less popular, because it's the customers who pay the bills, not just fans. That aside, a "customer" does not have to pay with cold, hard, cash. For instance, the free streams here on CR- you "pay" by viewing the ads. The ad sponsor is where the money comes from.
That, and well... I've kinda seen both sides of the fence. As someone who was kinda deep in the community, to the point of co-founding 3D-Fansubs (which was a grand total of 3 people, all whose names started with D) and Oretachi Media Group. (That was our full name, Oretachi was the handle.) But the sheer sense of entitlement sickened me. Most of the groups that claim to be "legit" aren't; the same people seemlessly kept working on series post-license under a different group name. And around this time, we also had groups like Anime-Junkies, who even publically spited a C&D order from Manga Ent in regards to GitS:SAC. Unfortunately, the "stick it to the company" was more becoming the unsaid mantra, and I watched the harm it was causing grow. So yeah, I kinda don't like them...

Fansubs don't help the industry, they just give it more publicity which isn't bad. But I personally would pay money anytime to get myself the bluray/dvd of a show instead of watching the fansub. And besides, I like collecting anime blurays/dvds :]

I don't hate fansubs as much as I really don't like illegal streaming sites that offer illegal downloads. That practice doesn't help anyone.

I'm a paid member here on CR, so if there's a way I can watch a series legitimately, then I will. But if it's fansubs or nothing, you better believe there will not be a second thought.

As I'm watching the Sailor Moon anime again(via these super HQ files I recently downloaded), I'm enjoying these fansubs from the group "sailormooncentral.net". Much better translation than what I had before, before I deleted my anime folder on the external hard drive by accident.
So fansubs can be excellent like these, or they can be terrible. It depends on what group does them.

when i used to watch anime often on those "illegal" anime-streaming wesites, i didn't hate them, but there were some horrible fansubbers (in terms of quality of their translations). idk how it is now though :\

fansubs decreases profit as they say... like what is the point of local TV channels buying licenses of anime to air them on TV if most people have watched it on fansubs long time ago
