Us folks in the US complain about waiting for the anime from Japan to make it here.

The prices in Japan are insanity.

Deadman Wonderland is 7180 Yen for the first Blu-ray of the series. That's about $95 US for some of the episodes!!!!!

Another is already out in Japan, and is also very expensive (~$83 US)

Needless to say, I didn't buy any anime in Japan.

Btw... guess which anime this one is?

Yeah, anime over there is scary, to say the least for prices. If you're lucky (big if on some series), you might find a series getting reprinted for about ¥3000 per disk, and I am aware that is about what the US charges for a 13 ep set.

Nichijou (日常)?

Yes, Japanese DVDs and BRs are extremely expensive compared to U.S. releases. I hear they can come with extra trinkets and such, but I'd have a hard time justifying purchasing anime myself in Japan. Anime books and figures, though, are often cheaper, and one can avoid shipping costs if you can just stuff them in your luggage.

Sure is. That is what I tell people who complain that Sentai, Viz and FUNi charge too much for 12 episodes sometimes around $40. You could be paying $90 for 2-4 episodes.

Yep!!!

I ate bad squid, got sick, and headed back to the ryokan to rest for two hours. Nichijou was on the whole time.

Yeah, I was blown away at the high prices of DVDs/BDs when I was in Akiba. ANN has some interesting articles called the "Anime Economy." This article in particular talks about DVD prices/sales:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2012-03-07

TL;DR version: Originally anime discs had a high price point because they were meant to be sold to rental shops, but collectors started to buy them too. The article mentions that the manufacturers tried to lower the price to increase sales, but it wasn't a huge gain, so they treat it as a specialty market and didn't lower to price. This way, they don't need to sell a ton of discs to help the production committee that funded the anime to recoup the costs.

In the UK anime is normally £2-3 per episode at RRP, or £1-2 per episode through online shops. Anime in Japan is normally £20-25 per episode.

Also your prices are a bit off. Box sets are normally £30-40 RRP, but you can get them for £20-30 through most websites. Singles are also normally £15 RRP. Half-sets (12 eps) are normally £20-25 RRP or £10-20 online. I don't know where you got the £40 figure for singles from.

Anime in the US is more expensive at RRP, but they also get bigger discounts online so UK and US online prices are pretty much the same. Anime in France is more expensive than in the US and UK by about 20-50%.

For the current home consoles, that's about right. And that price has come down significantly; there were games on the SNES that went over ¥10,000 each! Don't get me started on some of the N64 games...

Oh yeah, I've never even attempted to buy any anime while I was there, I bought little figures/plushies/cups while I was there. My husband asked me one time, 'You're in the land of anime, I'd figured you'd be scooping it up!"

Me: Uh, no, I'm not willing to pay $60 (the exchange rate give or take back in '07-'08) for only 2 episodes! Plus, it's region 2, I don't have a multi-region player!

Sounds like things went up even higher since I left! But I still miss the streets of Akihabara!
